A proof‐of‐concept pilot randomized comparative trial of brief Internet‐based compassionate mind training and cognitive‐behavioral therapy for perinatal and intending to become pregnant women
Depression is a prevalent and costly mental health problem that affects women as well as their larger communities, with substantial impacts on mother and infant during childbearing years. Face‐to‐face care has not adequately addressed this global concern due to difficulties in scaling these resources. Internet interventions, which can provide psychological tools to those lacking adequate access, show promise in filling this void. We conducted a 2‐condition proof‐of‐concept pilot randomized trial comparing brief Internet‐based cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and brief Internet‐based compassionate mind training (CMT) for women who are currently pregnant, became pregnant within the last year, and intend to become pregnant in the future. We found that, although CMT and CBT demonstrated near equivalence in improving affect, self‐reassurance, self‐criticism, and self‐compassion, CMT showed superiority to CBT in reducing depression and anxiety symptoms. These findings provide a compelling initial argument for the use of CMT as an avenue for addressing problems associated with negative affect. Implications, limitations, and future directions along this line of research will also be discussed.Campus Research Board at Palo Alto University

HA-grid: security aware hazard analysis for smart grids
Attacks targeting smart grid infrastructures can result in the disruptions of power supply as well as damages to costly equipment, with significant impact on safety as well as on end-consumers. It is therefore of essence to identify attack paths in the infrastructure that lead to safety violations and to determine critical components that must be protected. In this paper, we introduce a methodology (HA-Grid) that incorporates both safety and security modelling of smart grid infrastructure to analyse the impact of cyber threats on the safety of smart grid infrastructures. HA-Grid is applied on a smart grid test-bed to identify attack paths that lead to safety hazards, and to determine the common nodes in these attack paths as critical components that must be protected
Differential Regularization of Topologically Massive Yang-Mills Theory and Chern-Simons Theory
We apply differential renormalization method to the study of
three-dimensional topologically massive Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons theories.
The method is especially suitable for such theories as it avoids the need for
dimensional continuation of three-dimensional antisymmetric tensor and the
Feynman rules for three-dimensional theories in coordinate space are relatively
simple. The calculus involved is still lengthy but not as difficult as other
existing methods of calculation. We compute one-loop propagators and vertices
and derive the one-loop local effective action for topologically massive
Yang-Mills theory. We then consider Chern-Simons field theory as the large mass
limit of topologically massive Yang-Mills theory and show that this leads to
the famous shift in the parameter . Some useful formulas for the calculus of
differential renormalization of three-dimensional field theories are given in
an Appendix.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures. Several typewritten errors and inappropriate

A seed-diffusion model for tropical tree diversity patterns
Diversity patterns of tree species in a tropical forest community are
approached by a simple lattice model and investigated by Monte Carlo
simulations using a backtracking method. Our spatially explicit neutral model
is based on a simple statistical physics process, namely the diffusion of
seeds. The model has three parameters: the speciation rate, the size of the
meta-community in which the studied tree-community is embedded, and the average
surviving time of the seeds. By extensive computer simulations we aim the
reproduction of relevant statistical measures derived from the experimental
data of the Barro Colorado Island tree census in year 1995. The first two
parameters of the model are fixed to known values, characteristic of the
studied community, thus obtaining a model with only one freely adjustable
parameter. As a result of this, the average number of species in the considered
territory, the relative species abundance distribution, the species-area
relationship and the spatial auto-correlation function of the individuals in
abundant species are simultaneously fitted with only one parameter which is the
average surviving time of the seeds.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Automorphisms of Real 4 Dimensional Lie Algebras and the Invariant Characterization of Homogeneous 4-Spaces
The automorphisms of all 4-dimensional, real Lie Algebras are presented in a
comprehensive way. Their action on the space of , real, symmetric
and positive definite, matrices, defines equivalence classes which are used for
the invariant characterization of the 4-dimensional homogeneous spaces which
possess an invariant basis.Comment: LaTeX2e, 23 pages, 2 Tables. To appear in Journal of Physics A:

Shift of microbial communities and reduced enzymatic activity in soil under plastic mulching system in strawberry cultivation
The use of plastic mulching (PM) in agriculture has strongly increased in the last years. Improved water saving and higher soil temperature are some advantages of this management. Yet, an intensive use of PM has been recently linked to negative effects on soil quality. The aim of this study is thus to assess the effects of long-term plastic mulching (PM) on soil microbial indicators. PM was compared with the use of wheat straw mulching (SM), an also widely used mulch material. Samples were collected at two depths (0-5 and 5-10 cm) from strawberry fields, after 4-year management. Cultivation in PM and SM was done in a ridge-furrow system with subsurface irrigation. Soil characterization comprised soil texture and aggregate stability, soil organic carbon, pH and water content. Soil microbial analysis included: Soil microbial biomass (Cmic), a fraction of soil cultivable fungi (CFU values), soil bacteria (16S rRNA), denitrifying community (nirK, nirS, narG, napA genes), soil enzyme activity (C-Chitinase, P-Phosphatase and N Leucine-aminopeptidase), deoxynivalenol (DON) content and Cmic:Corg ratio. Positive effects on soil physicochemical properties were observed under PM as compared to SM, reflected by a higher soil carbon content and better aggregate stability (p>0.05). Yet, soil microbial analysis revealed some differences between managements. Cmic values were comparable in both systems, showing no differences in soil microbial biomass. In the same way, the analysis of functional genes of the N cycle and the activity of the enzymes P-Phosphatase and N Leucine-aminopeptidase was not affected by the mulching treatment. But, the abundance of bacteria (18%) and a fraction of soil cultivable fungi were reduced by respectively 18 and 62% under PM. Since the Cmic values remained similar between treatments, this accounts for a shift of microbial communities under PM. Additionally, C-Chitinase activity declined under PM. Interestingly, this enzyme correlated positively with CFU values (r=0.781, p=0.001), suggesting that a reduction of the activity is a consequence of the reduction of the fungal biomass. Additionally, a higher deoxynivalenol concentration (2.2 ± 2.4 µg kg-1) and a reduced Cmic:Corg ratio (1.3±0.3%) were observed under PM, indicative of less appropriate soil conditions after long-term PM management
Spin fluctuations in the stacked-triangular antiferromagnet YMnO3
The spectrum of spin fluctuations in the stacked-triangular antiferromagnet
YMnO3 was studied above the Neel temperature using both unpolarized and
polarized inelastic neutron scattering. We find an in-plane and an out-of-plane
excitation. The in-plane mode has two components just above TN, a
resolution-limited central peak and a Debye-like contribution. The
quasi-elastic fluctuations have a line-width that increases with q like Dq^z
and the dynamical exponent z=2.3. The out-of-plane fluctuations have a gap at
the magnetic zone center and do not show any appreciable q-dependence at small
wave-vectors.Comment: JETP LETTERS, in pres
