    The Sonophotocatalytic Degradation of Pharmaceuticals in Water by MnOx-TiO2 Systems with Tuned Band-Gaps

    Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are technologies to degrade organic pollutants to carbon dioxide and water with an eco-friendly approach to form reactive hydroxyl radicals.Photocatalysis is an AOP whereby TiO2 is the most adopted photocatalyst. However, TiO2 features a wide (3.2 eV) and fast electron-hole recombination. When Mn is embedded in TiO2, it shifts the absorption wavelength towards the visible region of light, making it active for natural light applications. We present a systematic study of how the textural and optical properties of Mn-doped TiO2 vary with ultrasound applied during synthesis. We varied ultrasound power, pulse length, and power density (by changing the amount of solvent). Ultrasound produced mesoporous MnOx-TiO2 powders with a higher surface area (101\u2013158 m2 g 121), pore volume (0-13\u20130.29 cc g 121), and smaller particle size (4\u201310 \ub5m) than those obtained with a conventional sol-gel method (48\u2013129 m2 g 121, 0.14\u20130.21 cc g 121 , 181 \ub5m, respectively). Surprisingly, the catalysts obtained with ultrasound had a content of brookite that was at least 28%, while the traditional sol-gel samples only had 7%. The samples synthesized with ultrasound had a wider distribution of the band-gaps, in the 1.6\u20131.91 eV range, while traditional ones ranged from 1.72 eV to 1.8 eV. We tested activity in the sonophotocatalytic degradation of two model pollutants (amoxicillin and acetaminophen). The catalysts synthesized with ultrasound were up to 50% more active than the traditional samples

    Multifunctional 3D printing of heterogeneous hydrogel structures

    Multimaterial additive manufacturing or three-dimensional (3D) printing of hydrogel structures provides the opportunity to engineer geometrically dependent functionalities. However, current fabrication methods are mostly limited to one type of material or only provide one type of functionality. In this paper, we report a novel method of multimaterial deposition of hydrogel structures based on an aspiration-on-demand protocol, in which the constitutive multimaterial segments of extruded filaments were first assembled in liquid state by sequential aspiration of inks into a glass capillary, followed by in situ gel formation. We printed different patterned objects with varying chemical, electrical, mechanical, and biological properties by tuning process and material related parameters, to demonstrate the abilities of this method in producing heterogeneous and multi-functional hydrogel structures. Our results show the potential of proposed method in producing heterogeneous objects with spatially controlled functionalities while preserving structural integrity at the switching interface between different segments. We anticipate that this method would introduce new opportunities in multimaterial additive manufacturing of hydrogels for diverse applications such as biosensors, flexible electronics, tissue engineering and organ printing

    Are transit trips symmetrical in time and space? Evidence from the Twin Cities

    This study exploits electronic fare collection data to examine the symmetry of boardings and alightings along a transit route. The symmetry of boardings and alightings is arguably the most important concept in the estimation of travel distances such as average trip lengths and passenger miles from data from entry-only fare collection systems. The paper shows the ways such data can be used to examine the symmetry of boardings and alightings through travel patterns in spatial and temporal dimensions. A novel method for aggregating stops, especially for the nearest stops in the opposite direction, is used to compare boardings in one direction with alightings in the opposite direction. Spatially, the method allows examination of the characteristics of boardings and alightings in a spatial dimension. Temporally, the method examines whether a specific and symmetric passenger flow is observed between specific periods (e.g., between morning and afternoon peaks). A case study of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota, region is performed by using automatically collected data from Metro Transit. Automatic fare collection data reveal considerable variation in passenger flow between specific periods. The use of automated passenger-counting data shows this variation to be statistically significant when both temporal and spatial symmetry are examined on an individual day

    Five-years surveillance of invasive aspergillosis in a university hospital

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>As the most common invasive fungal infection, invasive aspergillosis (IA) remains a serious complication in immunocompromised patients, leading to increased mortality. Antifungal therapy is expensive and may result in severe adverse effects.</p> <p>The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of invasive aspergillosis (IA) cases in a tertiary care university hospital using a standardized surveillance method.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>All inpatients at our facility were screened for presence of the following parameters: positive microbiological culture, pathologist's diagnosis and antifungal treatment as reported by the hospital pharmacy. Patients fulfilling one or more of these indicators were further reviewed and, if appropriate, classified according to international consensus criteria (EORTC).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>704 patients were positive for at least one of the indicators mentioned above. Applying the EORTC criteria, 214 IA cases were detected, of which 56 were proven, 25 probable and 133 possible. 44 of the 81 (54%) proven and probable cases were considered health-care associated. 37 of the proven/probable IA cases had received solid organ transplantation, an additional 8 had undergone stem cell transplantation, and 10 patients were suffering from some type of malignancy. All the other patients in this group were also suffering from severe organic diseases, required long treatment and experienced several clinical complications. 7 of the 56 proven cases would have been missed without autopsy. After the antimycotic prophylaxis regimen was altered, we noticed a significant decrease (p = 0.0004) of IA during the investigation period (2003-2007).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Solid organ and stem cell transplantation remain important risk factors for IA, but several other types of immunosuppression should also be kept in mind. Clinical diagnosis of IA may be difficult (in this study 13% of all proven cases were diagnosed by autopsy only). Thus, we confirm the importance of IA surveillance in all high-risk patients.</p

    Assessing the efficacy of a brief universal family skills programme on child behaviour and family functioning in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan: Protocol for a feasibility randomised controlled trial of the Strong Families programme

    Purpose The global burden of mental health difficulties among children underscores the importance of early prevention. This study aims to assess the efficacy, feasibility and acceptability of the Strong Families programme in enhancing child behaviour and family functioning in low-resource settings in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Methods and analysis This is a two-arm, multisite feasibility randomised controlled trial with an embedded process evaluation in three districts of Gilgit-Baltistan, namely Gilgit, Hunza and Skardu. 90 families living in these challenged settings, comprising a female primary caregiver aged 18 or above, and at least one child aged 8-15 years, will participate. Participants will be randomly assigned to either receive the Strong Families programme or to the waitlist group. Strong Families is a 7-hour family skills group intervention programme attended by children and their primary caregivers over 3 weeks. The waitlist group will be offered the intervention after their outcome assessment. Three raters will conduct blind assessments at baseline, 2 and 6 weeks postintervention. The primary outcome measures include the feasibility of Strong Families, as determined by families' recruitment and attendance rates, and programme completeness (mean number of sessions attended, attrition rates). The secondary outcomes include assessment of child behaviour, parenting practices, parental adjustment and child resilience. Purposefully selected participants, including up to five caregivers from each site, researchers and facilitators delivering the intervention, will be interviewed. Descriptive statistics will be used to analyse primary and secondary outcomes. The process evaluation will be conducted in terms of programme context, reach, fidelity, dose delivered and received, implementation, and recruitment. Ethics and dissemination This study has been approved by the UNODC Drug Prevention and Health Branch in the Headquarters office of Vienna and the National Bioethics Committee of Pakistan. Findings will be disseminated through publication in reputable journals, newsletters and presentations at conferences. Trial registration number NCT05933850

    The status of hepatitis C virus infection among people who inject drugs in the Middle East and North Africa.

    BACKGROUND AND AIMS: People who inject drugs (PWID) are a key population at high risk of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The aim of this study was to delineate the epidemiology of HCV in PWID in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). METHODS: Syntheses of data were conducted on the standardized and systematically assembled databases of the MENA HCV Epidemiology Synthesis Project, 1989-2018. Random-effects meta-analyses and meta-regressions were performed. Meta-regression variables included country, study site, year of data collection and year of publication [to assess trends in HCV antibody prevalence over time], sample size and sampling methodology. Numbers of chronically infected PWID across MENA were estimated. The Shannon Diversity Index was calculated to assess genotype diversity. RESULTS: Based on 118 HCV antibody prevalence measures, the pooled mean prevalence in PWID for all MENA was 49.3% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 44.4-54.1%]. The country-specific pooled mean ranged from 21.7% (95% CI = 4.9-38.6%) in Tunisia to 94.2% (95% CI = 90.8-96.7%) in Libya. An estimated 221 704 PWID were chronically infected, with the largest numbers found in Iran at 68 526 and in Pakistan at 46 554. There was no statistically significant evidence for a decline in HCV antibody prevalence over time. Genotype diversity was moderate (Shannon Diversity Index of 1.01 out of 1.95; 52.1%). The pooled mean percentage for each HCV genotype was highest in genotype 3 (42.7%) and in genotype 1 (35.9%). CONCLUSION: Half of people who inject drugs in the Middle East and North Africa appear to have ever been infected with hepatitis C virus, but there are large variations in antibody prevalence among countries. In addition to > 200 000 chronically infected current people who inject drugs, there is an unknown number of people who no longer inject drugs who may have acquired hepatitis C virus during past injecting drug use. Harm reduction services must be expanded, and innovative strategies need to be employed to ensure accessibility to hepatitis C virus testing and treatment

    Psychedelics and hypnosis: Commonalities and therapeutic implications

    Background Recent research on psychedelics and hypnosis demonstrates the value of both methods in the treatment of a range of psychopathologies with overlapping applications and neurophenomenological features. The potential of harnessing the power of suggestion to influence the phenomenological response to psychedelics toward more therapeutic action has remained unexplored in recent research and thereby warrants empirical attention. Aims Here we aim to elucidate the phenomenological and neurophysiological similarities and dissimilarities between psychedelic states and hypnosis in order to revisit how contemporary knowledge may inform their conjunct usage in psychotherapy. Methods We review recent advances in phenomenological and neurophysiological research on psychedelics and hypnosis and we summarize early investigations on the coupling of psychedelics and hypnosis in scientific and therapeutic contexts. Results/Outcomes We highlight commonalities and differences between psychedelics and hypnosis that point to the potential efficacy of combining the two in psychotherapy. We propose multiple research paths for coupling these two phenomena at different stages in the preparation, acute phase, and follow-up of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy in order to prepare, guide, and integrate the psychedelic experience with the aim of enhancing therapeutic outcomes. Conclusions/Interpretation Harnessing the power of suggestion to modulate response to psychedelics could enhance their therapeutic efficacy by helping to increase the likelihood of positive responses, including mystical type experiences
