Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptors in the Modulation of the Immune/Inflammatory Response in Atherosclerosis

    Get PDF
Inflammation has been recognized as an important hallmark of atherosclerosis. The pharmacological activation of PPAR-γ by the thiazolidinediones in diabetes, and of PPAR-α by the fibrates in hyperlipidemia has been shown to help to reduce inflammatory markers in preclinical and clinical studies. PPARs are known to modulate immune pathways through at least three different mechanisms: by direct binding to PPRE of anti-inflammatory cytokines genes; by transrepression of transcription factors like NF-κB and AP-1; or by corepression. The regulation of the inflammatory pathways by PPARs can be achieved on each one of the cells involved in the atherosclerotic process, that is, monocytes, macrophages, T cells, endothelial cells, and smooth muscle cells. Moreover, as each of these cellular components is interconnected with each other, PPAR activation in one cell type could affect the other ones. As activation of PPARs has clear ant-inflammatory benefits, PPARs ligands should be considered as a new therapeutical approach to ameliorate the exacerbated immune response in atherosclerotic diseases

Phosphoramidite Gold(I)-Catalyzed Diastereo- and Enantioselective Synthesis of 3,4-Substituted Pyrrolidines

    Get PDF
In this article the utility of phosphoramidite ligands in enantioselective AuI catalysis was explored in the development of highly diastereo- and enantioselective AuI-catalyzed cycloadditions of allenenes. A Au^I-catalyzed synthesis of 3,4-disubstituted pyrrolidines and γ-lactams is described. This reaction proceeds through the enantioselective AuI-catalyzed cyclization of allenenes to form a carbocationic intermediate that is trapped by an exogenous nucleophile, resulting in the highly diastereoselective construction of three contiguous stereogenic centers. A computational study (DFT) was also performed to gain some insight into the underlying mechanisms of these cycloadditions. The utility of this new methodology was demonstrated through the formal synthesis of (−)-isocynometrine

Ecology of the non-native snail Sinotaia cf quadrata (Caenogastropoda: Viviparidae). A study in a lowland stream of South America with different water qualities

    Get PDF
Sinotaia quadrata is a snail native from Asia recorded for the first time in South America in 2009 in central Argentina. In 2015, this species was also found in a lowland stream with different water qualities. Our aims were to contribute to the knowledge of its population ecology and to compare the individuals from the two locations anatomically. Snails were searched at 6 sites, where physicochemical and hydraulic parameters were measured. Biological samples were also taken at two sites (S3 and S4) to study the population traits of S. cf quadrata (density, size structure, fecundity and sex ratio) and to assess the water quality through macroinvertebrates' biological indices (richness, diversity and IBPamp). Physicochemical and biological parameters allowed us classifying sites as "moderately polluted" (S3) and "heavily polluted" (S4). At S4, the population showed a lower density, larger individuals, higher fecundity and a scarce representation of young snails. The differences observed in the radula and mantle border of snails from the two geographical regions might be attributed to environmental differences. We conclude that this species is tolerant to a wide range of environmental variables which, along with its high fecundity and morphological plasticity, could allow this species to colonize neighbor streams.Fil: Ferreira, Ana Clara. Characterization of Microbial Communities Associated with Ceramic Raw Materials as Potential Contributors for the Improvement of Ceramic Rheological Properties

    Get PDF
Technical ceramics are being widely employed in the electric power, medical and engineering industries because of their thermal and mechanical properties, as well as their high resistance qualities. The manufacture of technical ceramic components involves complex processes, including milling and stirring of raw materials in aqueous solutions, spray drying and dry pressing. In general, the spray-dried powders exhibit an important degree of variability in their performance when subjected to dry-pressing, which affects the efficiency of the manufacturing process. Commercial additives, such as deflocculants, biocides, antifoam agents, binders, lubricants and plasticizers are thus applied to ceramic slips. Several bacterial and fungal species naturally occurring in ceramic raw materials, such as Sphingomonas, Aspergillus and Aureobasidium, are known to produce exopolysaccharides. These extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) may confer unique and potentially interesting properties on ceramic slips, including viscosity control, gelation, and flocculation. In this study, the microbial communities present in clay raw materials were identified by both culture methods and DNA-based analyses to select potential EPS producers based on the scientific literature for further assays based on the use of EPS for enhancing the performance of technical ceramics. Potential exopolysaccharide producers were identified in all samples, such as Sphingomonas sp., Pseudomonas xanthomarina, P. stutzeri, P. koreensis, Acinetobacter lwoffi, Bacillus altitudinis and Micrococcus luteus, among bacteria. Five fungi (Penicillium citrinum, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium oxysporum, Acremonium persicinum and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa) were also identified as potential EPS producers.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia-EXPL/CTM-CER/0637/201

Envisioning New Horizons for the Political Economy of Sustainable Food Systems

This article considers how political economy can expand to contribute to the contemporary study of sustainable food systems, raising new questions for researchers, practitioners, and social movement actors engaged in collaborative efforts to transform dominant foodscapes. Our discussion and analysis draw on the outcomes of a workshop of the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES-Food) and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) on the political economies of sustainable food systems in June 2018. The workshop participants identified five cross-cutting research issues and related methods worthy of focus: multiple forms of knowledge, technology and innovation, expansion or scaling sustainable innovations, the role of the private sector, and democratic governance. We conclude by positing ways forward that contribute to the evolving political economy of sustainable food systems.International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (iPES Food

Crop yields response to water pressures in the Ebro basin in Spain: risk and water policy implications

    Get PDF
he increasing pressure on water systems in the Mediterranean enhances existing water conflicts and threatens water supply for agriculture. In this context, one of the main priorities for agricultural research and public policy is the adaptation of crop yields to water pressures. This paper focuses on the evaluation of hydrological risk and water policy implications for food production. Our methodological approach includes four steps. For the first step, we estimate the impacts of rainfall and irrigation water on crop yields. However, this study is not limited to general crop production functions since it also considers the linkages between those economic and biophysical aspects which may have an important effect on crop productivity. We use statistical models of yield response to address how hydrological variables affect the yield of the main Mediterranean crops in the Ebro river basin. In the second step, this study takes into consideration the effects of those interactions and analyzes gross value added sensitivity to crop production changes. We then use Montecarlo simulations to characterize crop yield risk to water variability. Finally we evaluate some policy scenarios with irrigated area adjustments that could cope in a context of increased water scarcity. A substantial decrease in irrigated land, of up to 30% of total, results in only moderate losses of crop productivity. The response is crop and region specific and may serve to prioritise adaptation strategies
