Mapping the Two-Component Atomic Fermi Gas to the Nuclear Shell-Model
The physics of a two-component cold fermi gas is now frequently addressed in
laboratories. Usually this is done for large samples of tens to hundreds of
thousands of particles. However, it is now possible to produce few-body systems
(1-100 particles) in very tight traps where the shell structure of the external
potential becomes important. A system of two-species fermionic cold atoms with
an attractive zero-range interaction is analogous to a simple model of nucleus
in which neutrons and protons interact only through a residual pairing
interaction. In this article, we discuss how the problem of a two-component
atomic fermi gas in a tight external trap can be mapped to the nuclear shell
model so that readily available many-body techniques in nuclear physics, such
as the Shell Model Monte Carlo (SMMC) method, can be directly applied to the
study of these systems. We demonstrate an application of the SMMC method by
estimating the pairing correlations in a small two-component Fermi system with
moderate-to-strong short-range two-body interactions in a three-dimensional
harmonic external trapping potential.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures. Final versio
Governing the Global Land Grab: Multipolarity, Ideas and Complexity in Transnational Governance
Since 2008, a series of new regulatory initiatives have emerged to address large-scale land grabs. These initiatives are occurring simultaneously at multiple levels of social organization instead of a single, overarching institutional site. A significant portion of this activity is taking place at the transnational level. We suggest that transnational land governance is indicative of emerging shifts in the practice of governance of global affairs. We analyze such shifts by asking two related questions: what does land grabbing tell us about developments in transnational governance, particularly with regard to North-South relations, and what do these developments in transnational governance mean for regulating land grabbing?
Legitimacy intermediation in the multilevel European polity and its collapse in the euro crisis
This essay re-examines the dual – republican and liberal – foundations of democratic legitimacy in the Western traditions of normative political theory. Considered in isolation, the European Union conforms to liberal standards but cannot satisfy republican criteria. Given these conflicting standards, debates on the alleged European democratic deficit have remained inconclusive. Moreover, they have failed to pay sufficient attention to the multilevel character of the European polity and to the normative potential of legitimacy intermediation in its two-step compliance and legitimating relationships. I argue, however, that the capacity of democratic member states to legitimate the exercise of European governing functions is being destroyed in the present euro crisis, and I briefly discuss the implications of this new constellation. Der Aufsatz erörtert die Implikationen dieser neuen Konstellation.1 Introduction 2 Legitimacy discourses The republican discourse The liberal discourse Differences 3 Constitutional democracies – and the European Union? 4 Legitimacy intermediation in the multilevel European polity 5 The end of legitimacy intermediation in the euro crisis Monetary Union and the failure of output legitimacy Rescuing the euro through supranational intervention 6 Legitimate supranational government? Comparison of fluid tiltmeter data with long-period seismograms: Surface waves and Earth's free oscillations
We compare observations of long-period seismic surface waves and free oscillations recorded by high-resolution long-base fluid tube tiltmeters and by nearby broadband seismometers after large earthquakes. The quality of the tiltmeter data is comparable to that of the best horizontal component seismic data, recording some of the gravest free oscillations of the Earth, as well as successive passages of seismic surface waves circling the globe. We compare the observations with theoretical seismograms and with theoretical tilt. The predicted and observed surface wave tilt waveforms are very similar provided that we take into account horizontal acceleration effects on the tiltmeter. Phase and amplitude anomalies between the waveforms are well explained by the theoretical transfer function of the instrument. Likewise, observed horizontal seismograms converted into tilt match the tiltmeter data very well. Long-base fluid tube tiltmeters could potentially contribute to obtain high-quality measurements of the long-period seismic spectrum
