On the evolution of research in hypersonics: application of natural language processing and machine learning
Research and development in hypersonics have progressed significantly in
recent years, with various military and commercial applications being
demonstrated increasingly. Public and private organizations in several
countries have been investing in hypersonics, with the aim to overtake their
competitors and secure/improve strategic advantage and deterrence. For these
organizations, being able to identify emerging technologies in a timely and
reliable manner is paramount. Recent advances in information technology have
made it possible to analyze large amounts of data, extract hidden patterns, and
provide decision-makers with new insights. In this study, we focus on
scientific publications about hypersonics within the period of 2000-2020, and
employ natural language processing and machine learning to characterize the
research landscape by identifying 12 key latent research themes and analyzing
their temporal evolution. Our publication similarity analysis revealed patterns
that are indicative of cycles during two decades of research. The study offers
a comprehensive analysis of the research field and the fact that the research
themes are algorithmically extracted removes subjectivity from the exercise and
enables consistent comparisons between topics and between time intervals.Comment: 18 pages, 9 figure
Large-scale gene discovery in the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Hemiptera)
Aphids are the leading pests in agricultural crops. A large-scale sequencing of 40,904 ESTs from the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum was carried out to define a catalog of 12,082 unique transcripts. A strong AT bias was found, indicating a compositional shift between Drosophila melanogaster and A. pisum. An in silico profiling analysis characterized 135 transcripts specific to pea-aphid tissues (relating to bacteriocytes and parthenogenetic embryos). This project is the first to address the genetics of the Hemiptera and of a hemimetabolous insect.Beatriz Sabater-Muñoz... et al

WISDOM: An AI-powered framework for emerging research detection using weak signal analysis and advanced topic modeling
The landscape of science and technology is characterized by its dynamic and evolving nature, constantly reshaped by new discoveries, innovations, and paradigm shifts. Moreover, science is undergoing a remarkable shift towards increasing interdisciplinary collaboration, where the convergence of diverse fields fosters innovative solutions to complex problems. Detecting emerging scientific topics is paramount as it enables industries, policymakers, and innovators to adapt their strategies, investments, and regulations proactively. As the common approach for detecting emerging technologies, despite being useful, bibliometric analyses may suffer from oversimplification and/or misinterpretation of complex interdisciplinary trends. In addition, relying solely on domain experts to pinpoint emerging technologies from science and technology trends might restrict the ability to systematically analyze extensive information and introduce subjective judgments into the interpretations. To overcome these drawbacks, in this work, we present an automated artificial intelligence-enabled framework, called WISDOM, for detecting emerging research themes using advanced topic modeling and weak signal analysis. The proposed approach can assist strategic planners and domain experts in more effectively recognizing and tracking trends related to emerging topics by swiftly processing and analyzing vast volumes of data, uncovering hidden cross-disciplinary patterns, and offering unbiased insights, thereby enhancing the efficiency and objectivity of the detection process. As the case technology, we assess WISDOM\u27s performance in identifying emerging research as well as their trends, in the field of underwater sensing technologies using scientific papers published between 2004 and 2021.18 pages, 7 figure
Les meubles meublants dans le répertoire du mobilier ancien au Québec
Furniture in the old homes of Quebec varied depending on the area — urban or rural — and even more on the financial means of the occupants. Many studies have already been carried out on movable furniture, but there is a category of furniture which forms an integral part of the house and which might well be called "built-in." The corresponding French term, meubles meublants, was used with reference to the appointments of high society interiors in eighteenth-century France. Homes in rural France also contained built-in furnishings and something of this tradition was transposed to New France where certain examples persisted until the nineteenth century while others disappeared. In addition to field research, notarial archives provide an excellent insight into built-in furnishings. An overall picture of this aspect of Quebec furniture is provided in a table which suggests a classification based on function
