    Proteomic Analysis of Serum in Lung Cancer Induced by 3-Methylcholanthrene

    Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Early detection of lung cancer is problematic due to the lack of a marker with high diagnosis sensitivity and specificity. To determine the differently expressed proteins in the serum of lung cancer and figure out the function of the proteins, two-dimensional electrophoresis (2DE) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) were used to screen the serum proteins of lung cancer model induced by 3-methylcholanthrene (MCA). From optimized 2DE image, 455 spots in the normal sera and 716 spots in the lung cancers sera were detected. Among them, 141 protein spots were differentially expressed when comparing the serum from normal rat and serum from lung cancer model, including 82 overexpressed proteins and 59 underexpressed proteins. Changes of haptoglobin, transthyretin, and TNF superfamily member 8 (TNFRS8) were confirmed in sera from lung cancer by MALDI-TOF-MS. Proteomics technology leads to identify changes of haptoglobin, transthyretin, and TNFRS8 in serum of rat lung cancer model and represents a powerful tool in searching for candidate proteins as biomarkers

    Roles of circRNA dysregulation in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma tumor microenvironment

    Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is the most prevalent histological esophageal cancer characterized by advanced diagnosis, metastasis, resistance to treatment, and frequent recurrence. In recent years, numerous human disorders such as ESCC, have been linked to abnormal expression of circular RNAs (circRNAs), suggesting that they are fundamental to the intricate system of gene regulation that governs ESCC formation. The tumor microenvironment (TME), referring to the area surrounding the tumor cells, is composed of multiple components, including stromal cells, immune cells, the vascular system, extracellular matrix (ECM), and numerous signaling molecules. In this review, we briefly described the biological purposes and mechanisms of aberrant circRNA expression in the TME of ESCC, including the immune microenvironment, angiogenesis, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, hypoxia, metabolism, and radiotherapy resistance. As in-depth research into the processes of circRNAs in the TME of ESCC continues, circRNAs are promising therapeutic targets or delivery systems for cancer therapy and diagnostic and prognostic indicators for ESCC

    Gender-Specific Differences on the Association of Hypertension with Subclinical Thyroid Dysfunction

Both hypertension and subclinical thyroid dysfunction (STD) have high prevalence and clinical importance, but their relationship is still a matter of debate. We aimed to explore gender-specific difference on the association between hypertension and STD in Chinese. Methods. We recruited 13,380 ostensible healthy participants (8,237 men and 5,143 women). The associations between hypertension and STD were analyzed on a gender-based setting after dividing STD into subclinical hypothyroidism, subclinical hyperthyroidism and further subgrouped euthyroidism. Crude and adjusted odds ratios of STD for hypertension were analyzed by binary logistic regression. Results. An increasing trend of hypertension prevalence was found along with aging in both genders. Yet, higher male hypertension prevalence was found until 65 years, and then it intersected with female hypertension prevalence. Women had significantly higher propensity for STD than men. Yet, in elderly participants, this gender-specific difference became less obvious. We displayed detrimental effects for subclinical hypothyroidism in both genders after multiple-covariate adjustments, yet no such effects were shown for subclinical hyperthyroidism. Moreover, females with subclinical hypothyroidism were more likely to be associated with hypertension than males, and the corresponding odds ratios were 1.619 (

    Prevalence, associated factors and outcomes of pressure injuries in adult intensive care unit patients: the DecubICUs study

Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat

    Road Extraction Based on Improved Convolutional Neural Networks with Satellite Images

    Deep learning has been applied in various fields for its effective and accurate feature learning capabilities in recent years. Currently, information extracted from remote sensing images with the learning methods has become the most relevant research area for its developed precision. In terms of developing segmentation precision and reducing calculation power consumption, the improved deep learning methods have received more attention, and the improvement of semantic segmentation architectures has been a popular solution. This research presents a learning method named D-DenseNet with a new structure for road extraction. The methods for the improvement are divided into two stages: (1) alternate the consecutive dilated convolutions number in the structure of the network (2) the stem block is arranged as the initial block. So, dilated convolution can obtain more global context information through the whole network. Further, the D-DenseNet restructures D-LinkNet by taking DenseNet as its backbone instead of ResNet, which can expand the receptive field and accept more feature information. The D-DenseNet is effective because of its 119 M model size and 57.96% IoU on the processing test data and 99.3 M modes size and 66.26% on the public dataset, which achieved the research objective for reducing model size and developing segmentation precision—IoU. The experiment indicates that the D-Dense block and the stem block are effective for developing road extraction, and the appropriate number of convolution layers is also essential for model evaluation
