Charney Hall Redesign Using Cross-Laminated Timber

    Get PDF
Santa Clara University’s new law building, Charney Hall, was constructed in 2018 using steel and concrete, but was redesigned by this team using Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and Glue- Laminated Timber (glulams). Charney Hall is a non-symmetric, incongruent structure with large open rooms up to 6,000 square feet. Glulams are made of several parallel planks of wood glued together with structural epoxy to obtain higher strength in the longitudinal direction. CLT panels are similar to glulams, but the longitudinal grains of wood planks are oriented in perpendicular layers in order to increase strength along the weak and strong axes of the member. These engineered wood products capture the strength and longevity of steel and concrete while lowering the environmental impact during the manufacturing and construction process, so the purpose of this design was to show the applicability of these materials in the United States. The completion of this design required an understanding of product information and material properties provided by manufacturers such as Structurlam along with an understanding of the fire, seismic, and safety research that a few organizations, such as Portland and Oregon State Universities, have conducted. This structural redesign included the design of the gravity system by way of the glulam beams and columns and the CLT floor diaphragms. It also included the design of CLT shear walls for the lateral system and a few poignant connection designs

Task Force Rattlesnake: A Cost Analysis of Fire Crew Base Pay in California

    Get PDF
Wildfire management in California is an expensive program totaling over $3 billion in 2020, where the state provides two-thirds of the budget from the general fund (Peters et al., 2020). California has consistently used the state military to assist in wildland fire mitigation efforts; however, for the first time it has created a year-round team to reduce fuels to clean up the state’s forests. Further analysis would determine if Task Force Rattlesnake is an effective use of the state’s budget for wildfire mitigation

Medical-Legal Collaboration and Community Partnerships: Prioritizing Prevention of Human Trafficking in Federally Qualified Health Centers

    Get PDF
Human trafficking (HT) is increasingly recognized as a public health issue, and its severe consequences affect some of society’s most vulnerable members. Prioritizing prevention is a critical component of a public health framework when addressing HT, and the health care delivery system plays a crucial role in operationalizing primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention interventions. As a significant part of the primary care system in the U.S., Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) are uniquely positioned to be the first point of contact with the health care system for people at risk for and affected by HT. FQHCs provide many preventive services, health education programs, and community outreach initiatives; therefore, FQHCs have a great reach into the populations at risk of and affected by HT. Furthermore, FQHCs recognize the importance of leveraging legal expertise and services to address their communities’ health-related social needs. There are many models for medical legal collaboration, including formal co-located medical–legal partnerships, as well as broader, community-based relationships. This Article will discuss types of medical–legal efforts and highlight individual patient and organizational case studies from Banteay Srei (a youth development program for Southeast Asian young women and girls at risk of commercial sexual exploitation, a program of Asian Health Services (AHS), an FQHC in Oakland, California). Finally, there will be a discussion about the intersection of HT with intimate partner violence (IPV), and how community partnerships and legal partnerships have played an important role in prevention efforts, with an organizational case study from Futures Without Violence, a national nonprofit providing training, technical assistance, and policy advocacy across the country for violence prevention

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C27H45ClO, consists of two crystallographically independent molecules. In both molecules, the three cyclohexane rings in the steroid fused-ring systems adopt chair conformations, while the cyclopentane ring adopts a half-chair conformation in one molecule and an envelope conformation in the other. In the crystal, the molecules are linked into a two-dimensional network by weak C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The crystal studied is a nonmerohedral twin with a refined ratio of twin components of 0.264 (3):0.736 (3)

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C30H48ClN3O, contains two molecules, A and B. In both molecules, the three cyclohexane rings in the steroid fused ring systems adopt chair conformations, while the cyclopentane rings adopt envelope and twist conformations in molecules A and B, respectively. In molecule B, the cyano group is disordered over two orientations with refined site-occupancies of 0.593 (8) and 0.407 (8). An intramolecular C—H⋯N interaction forms an S(10) ring in both molecules. In the crystal, molecules are linked by N—H⋯O, C—H⋯O and C—H⋯N interactions, resulting is chains propagating along the a-axis direction
