Submm/mm Galaxy Counterpart Identification Using a Characteristic Density Distribution
We present a new submm/mm galaxy counterpart identification technique which
builds on the use of Spitzer IRAC colors as discriminators between likely
counterparts and the general IRAC galaxy population. Using 102 radio- and
SMA-confirmed counterparts to AzTEC sources across three fields (GOODS-N,
GOODS-S, and COSMOS), we develop a non-parametric IRAC color-color
characteristic density distribution (CDD), which, when combined with positional
uncertainty information via likelihood ratios, allows us to rank all potential
IRAC counterparts around SMGs and calculate the significance of each ranking
via the reliability factor. We report all robust and tentative radio
counterparts to SMGs, the first such list available for AzTEC/COSMOS, as well
as the highest ranked IRAC counterparts for all AzTEC SMGs in these fields as
determined by our technique. We demonstrate that the technique is free of radio
bias and thus applicable regardless of radio detections. For observations made
with a moderate beamsize (~18"), this technique identifies ~85 per cent of SMG
counterparts. For much larger beamsizes (>30"), we report identification rates
of 33-49 per cent. Using simulations, we demonstrate that this technique is an
improvement over using positional information alone for observations with
facilities such as AzTEC on the LMT and SCUBA-2 on JCMT.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRA
Mind bomb 1 in the lymphopoietic niches is essential for T and marginal zone B cell development
Notch signaling regulates lineage decisions at multiple stages of lymphocyte development, and Notch activation requires the endocytosis of Notch ligands in the signal-sending cells. Four E3 ubiquitin ligases, Mind bomb (Mib) 1, Mib2, Neuralized (Neur) 1, and Neur2, regulate the Notch ligands to activate Notch signaling, but their roles in lymphocyte development have not been defined. We show that Mib1 regulates T and marginal zone B (MZB) cell development in the lymphopoietic niches. Inactivation of the Mib1 gene, but not the other E3 ligases, Mib2, Neur1, and Neur2, abrogated T and MZB cell development. Reciprocal bone marrow (BM) transplantation experiments revealed that Mib1 in the thymic and splenic niches is essential for T and MZB cell development. Interestingly, when BM cells from transgenic Notch reporter mice were transplanted into Mib1-null mice, the Notch signaling was abolished in the double-negative thymocytes. In addition, the endocytosis of Dll1 was impaired in the Mib1-null microenvironment. Moreover, the block in T cell development and the failure of Dll1 endocytosis were also observed in coculture system by Mib1 knockdown. Our study reveals that Mib1 is the essential E3 ligase in T and MZB cell development, through the regulation of Notch ligands in the thymic and splenic microenvironments

Primary Cardiac Lymphoma Presenting With Atrioventricular Block
Primary cardiac lymphomas (PCL) are extremely rare. Clinical manifestations may be variable and are attributed to location. Here, we report on a case of PCL presenting with atrioventricular (AV) block. A 55 year-old male had experienced chest discomfort with unexplained dyspnea and night sweating. His initial electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed a first degree AV block. Along with worsening chest discomfort and dyspnea, his ECG changed to show second degree AV block (Mobitz type I). Computed tomography (CT) scan showed a cardiac mass (about 7 cm) and biopsy was performed. Pathologic finding confirmed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. The patient was treated with multi-drug combination chemotherapy (R-CHOP: Rituximab, cyclophoshamide, anthracycline, vincristine, and prednisone). After treatment, ECG changed to show normal sinus rhythm with complete remission on follow-up CT scan
A guanidine-appended scyllo-inositol derivative AAD-66 enhances brain delivery and ameliorates Alzheimerâs phenotypes
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative brain disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions but lacks efficient therapeutic agents. Blocking toxic amyloid beta (A beta) could be beneficial for AD and represents a promising therapeutic strategy for AD treatment. scyllo-Inositol (SI) is a potential therapeutic for AD by directly interacting with the A beta peptide to inhibit A beta 42 fiber formation. Clinical studies of SI showed promising benefits on mild to moderate AD, however, with limitations on dosage regime. A new strategy to enhance the brain delivery of SI is needed to achieve the efficacy with minimum adverse effects. Herein, we report that a novel guanidine-appended SI derivative AAD-66 resulted in more effective reductions of brain A beta and plaque deposits, gliosis, and behavioral memory deficits in the disease-established 5xFAD mice. T Cell Receptor Signaling That Regulates the Development of Intrathymic Natural Regulatory T Cells
T cell receptor (TCR) signaling plays a critical role in T cell development, survival and differentiation. In the thymus, quantitative and/or qualitative differences in TCR signaling determine the fate of developing thymocytes and lead to positive and negative selection. Recently, it has been suggested that self-reactive T cells, escape from negative selection, should be suppressed in the periphery by regulatory T cells (Tregs) expressing Foxp3 transcription factor. Foxp3 is a master factor that is critical for not only development and survival but also suppressive activity of Treg. However, signals that determine Treg fate are not completely understood. The availability of mutant mice which harbor mutations in TCR signaling mediators will certainly allow to delineate signaling events that control intrathymic (natural) Treg (nTreg) development. Takayasu's Arteritis Treated by Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty with Stenting in the Descending Aorta
A 17-yr-old young woman was referred to our hospital with a 2-yr history of claudication of the lower extremities and severe arterial hypertension. Physical examination revealed significantly different blood pressures between both arms (160/92 and 180/95 mmHg) and legs (92/61 and 82/57 mmHg). The hematological and biochemical values were within their normal ranges, except for the increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate (83 mm/hr) and C-reactive protein (6.19 mg/L). On 3-dimensional computed tomographic angiography, the ascending aorta, the aortic arch and its branches, and the thoracic and, descending aorta, but not the renal artery, were shown to be stenotic. The diagnosis of type IIb Takayasu's arteritis was made according to the new angiographic classification of Takayasu's arteritis, Takyasu conference 1994. Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty with stenting was performed on the thoracic and abdominal aorta. After the interventional procedures, the upper extremity blood pressure improved from 162/101 mmHg to 132/85 mmHg, respectively. She has been free of claudication and there have been no cardiac events during 2-yr of clinical follow-up
