    A Case Report of an Accessory and Cavitated Uterine Mass Treated with Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

    Accessory and Cavitated Uterine Mass (ACUM) is a condition defined by the presence of a non-communicating uterine mass close to the insertion of the round ligament. ACUM is a rare M?llerian anomaly found in young women and is diagnosed by the presents of a central cavity in the uterus, lined by functional endometrium, and surrounded by a ring of smooth muscle. In most cases, surgical treatment is recommended due to severe dysmenorrhea. Herein, we present a case of a woman with severe dysmenorrhea since adolescence which was not relieved with any form of hormonal treatment. ACUM was suspected preoperatively based on MRI findings, and she was treated with total laparoscopic hysterectomy. A uterine mass was found at the insertion of the right round ligament during surgery. All her symptoms improved after resection

    Free Amino Acids and Related Compounds in the Fluid from Surgical Ciliated Cysts of the Maxilla

    Fluids from 6 surgical ciliated cysts of the maxilla and autologous sera were analyzed for total free amino acids and related compounds concentrations. All of the amino acids present in the serum were observed in the cyst fluids, but the concentrations and profile of their constituents were markedly different from that of the serum. The concentrations of non-essential amino acids such as Ala, Glx, and Gly were extremely low in the cyst fluids. The composition and concentration of the amino acids and related compounds in the fluids of these cysts may reflect the balance between proteolytic and catabolic metabolism and also in the permeability effect of the lining cells of the cyst wall

    Lepton Flavor Violation in Intersecting D-brane Models

    We investigate lepton flavor violation in the context of intersecting D-brane models. We point out that these models have a source to generate flavor violation in the trilinear scalar couplings while the geometry of the construction leads to degenerate soft scalar masses for different generations (as in the minimal supergravity model) at the string scale. The trilinear scalar couplings are not proportional to the Yukawa couplings when the F-term of the U-moduli contribution is non-zero. Consequently, the lepton flavor violating decay processes are generated. Only other sources of flavor violations in this model are the Dirac neutrino Yukawa coupling and the Majorana couplings. The observed fermion mixings are realized from the ``almost rank 1" Yukawa matrices, which generate a simple texture for the trilinear scalar terms. We calculate the branching ratios of tau -> mu gamma, mu -> e gamma and the electric dipole moment of the electron in this model. We find that the observation of all the lepton flavor violating decay processes and the electric dipole moment will be able to sort out different flavor violating sources.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure

    Gauge Symmetry Breaking through Soft Masses in Supersymmetric Gauge Theories

    Effects of soft breaking in N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories are studied. For N_f < N_c, we include the dynamics of the non-perturbative superpotential and use the original (s)quark and gauge fields. For N_f > N_c +1, we formulate the dynamics in terms of dual (s)quarks and a dual gauge group SU(N_f-N_c). The mass squared of the squarks can be negative triggering spontaneous breakdown of flavor and color symmetry. The general condition for stability of the vacuum is derived. We determine the breaking pattern, determine the spectrum and argue that the masses vary smoothly as one crosses from the Higgs phase into the confining phase, thus exhibiting complementarity.Comment: Contribution to Inauguration Conferference of Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics, 4-10 June, 1996, Seoul National University; LaTeX, no macros neede

    Bandwidth enhancement in an InGaN/GaN three-section superluminescent diode for optical coherence tomography

    In this paper, the optoelectronic properties of InGaN-based blue (430 nm) superluminescent light-emitting diodes with a multi-section, three contact design are reported. The bias conditions of the rear absorber section and gain sections are explored in terms of enhancing and maximizing spectral bandwidth. We demonstrate that broader emission can be obtained with a short circuit, rather than an open circuit absorber section, and with two active regions at different current densities as opposed to a single active contact. Under optimal drive conditions, a −3 dB linewidth of 20 nm is obtained at 430 nm. Analysis of the device emission spectrum indicates that an axial resolution of ∼3.4 μm may be obtained in an optical coherence tomography system

    Effect of diabetes and prediabetes on the development of disability and mortality among middle-aged Japanese adults : A 22-year follow up of NIPPON DATA90.

    Aims/introduction:To examine the association between diabetes and prediabetes at baseline, and disability, mortality over a 22-year period among middle-aged Japanese adults.Materials and methods:Participants consisted of 1,788 adults aged 45-64 years at baseline from the cohort study National Integrated Project for Prospective Observation of Non-communicable Disease and its Trends in the Aged 1990 (NIPPON DATA90). Disability, defined as having a decline in activities of daily living (ADL), was assessed by a modified Katz questionnaire at four time points. Disability and death without disability for 22-year follow up were used as outcomes to test the association with a diagnosis of diabetes or prediabetes at baseline, using multinomial logistic regression. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were obtained from four models that contained appropriate adjustment factors, such as age, sex, smoking status, drinking status, body mass index and cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, triglycerides, low serum high-density lipoprotein), at baseline.Results:In the present study, 334 participants (18.7%) reported at least one disability, and 350 (19.6%) were reported dead without observation of disability during follow up. Adjusting sex and other risk factors, participants with diabetes and prediabetes had a higher risk for disability (OR 1.43, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.07-1.91 and OR 1.66, 95% CI 1.10-2.50, respectively) and for mortality (OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.16-2.08 and OR 1.77, 95% CI 1.18-2.65, respectively) than individuals with normal glucose tolerance.Conclusions:In middle-aged Japanese adults, individuals with diabetes and prediabetes were more likely to be associated with disability and mortality. Our findings suggest that prediabetes and diabetes in middle-aged adults should be paid more attention, and requires more intervention to prevent disability and mortality in later life
