    Use of high-resolution measurements for the retrieval of temperature and gas-concentration profiles from outgoing infrared spectra in the presence of cirrus clouds

    We explore ways in which high-spectral-resolution measurements can aid in the retrieval of atmospheric temperature and gas-concentration profiles from outgoing infrared spectra when optically thin cirrus clouds are present. Simulated outgoing spectra that contain cirrus are fitted with spectra that do not contain cirrus, and the residuals are examined. For those lines with weighting functions that peak near the same altitude as the thin cirrus, unique features are observed in the residuals. These unique features are highly sensitive to the resolution of the instrumental line shape. For thin cirrus these residual features are narrow (≤0.1 cm-1), so high spectral resolution is required for unambiguous observation. The magnitudes of these unique features are larger than the noise of modern instruments. The sensitivities of these features to cloud height and cloud optical depth are also discussed. Our sensitivity studies show that, when the errors in the estimation of temperature profiles are not large, the dominant contribution to the residuals is the misinterpretation of cirrus. An analysis that focuses on information content is also presented. An understanding of the magnitude of the effect and of its dependence on spectral resolution as well as on spectral region is important for retrieving spacecraft data and for the design of future infrared instruments for forecasting weather and monitoring greenhouse gases

    In this brief, it is proved that a linear dual-rate system can be represented via a series cascade of: 1) a conventional expander, a single-input single-output (SISO) linear time-invariant (LTI) filter and a block decimator, or 2) a block expander, an SISO LTI filter and a conventional decimator. Hence, incompatible nonuniform filter banks could achieve perfect reconstruction via LTI filters, conventional samplers and block samplers without expanding the input-output dimension of a subsystem of linear dual-rate systems or converting the nonuniform filter banks to uniform filter banks.     Methane release on Early Mars by atmospheric collapse and atmospheric reinflation

    A candidate explanation for Early Mars rivers is atmospheric warming due to surface release of H2_2 or CH4_4 gas. However, it remains unknown how much gas could be released in a single event. We model the CH4_4 release by one mechanism for rapid release of CH4_4 from clathrate. By modeling how CH4_4-clathrate release is affected by changes in Mars' obliquity and atmospheric composition, we find that a large fraction of total outgassing from CH4_4 clathrate occurs following Mars' first prolonged atmospheric collapse. This atmosphere-collapse-initiated CH4_4-release mechanism has three stages. (1) Rapid collapse of Early Mars' carbon dioxide atmosphere initiates a slower shift of water ice from high ground to the poles. (2) Upon subsequent CO2_2-atmosphere re-inflation and CO2_2-greenhouse warming, low-latitude clathrate decomposes and releases methane gas. (3) Methane can then perturb atmospheric chemistry and surface temperature, until photochemical processes destroy the methane. Within our model, we find that under some circumstances a Titan-like haze layer would be expected to form, consistent with transient deposition of abundant complex abiotic organic matter on the Early Mars surface. We also find that this CH4_4-release mechanism can warm Early Mars, but special circumstances are required in order to uncork 1017^{17} kg of CH4_4, the minimum needed for strong warming. Specifically, strong warming only occurs when the fraction of the hydrate stability zone that is initially occupied by clathrate exceeds 10%, and when Mars' first prolonged atmospheric collapse occurs for atmospheric pressure > 1 bar.Comment: Accepted by Planetary and Space Scienc

    This paper proposes a non-linear block matched motion model with motion vectors having arbitrary pixel precisions. The optimal motion vector which minimizes the mean square error is solved analytically in a single step. Our proposed algorithm can be regarded as a generalization of conventional half pixel search algorithms and quarter pixel search algorithms because our proposed algorithm could achieve motion vectors with arbitrary pixel precisions. Also, the computational effort of our proposed algorithm is lower than that of conventional quarter pixel search algorithms because our proposed algorithm could achieve motion vectors in a single step

    Occurence of elliptical fractal patterns in multi-bit bandpass sigma delta modulators

    It has been established that the class of bandpass sigma delta modulators (SDMs) with single bit quantizers could exhibit state space dynamics represented by elliptic or fractal patterns confined within trapezoidal regions. In this letter, we find that elliptical fractal patterns may also occur in bandpass SDMs with multibit quantizers, even for the case when the saturation regions of the multibit quantizers are not activated and a large number of bits are used for the implementation of the quantizers. Moreover, the fractal pattern may occur for low bit quantizers, and the visual appearance of the phase portraits between the infinite state machine and the finite state machine with high bit quantizers is different. These phenomena are different from those previously reported for the digital filter with two’s complement arithmetic. Furthermore, some interesting phenomena are found. A bit change of the quantizer can result in a dramatic change in the fractal patterns. When the trajectories of the corresponding linear systems converge to a fixed point, the regions of the elliptical fractal patterns diminish in size as the number of bits of the quantizers increases

    Temporal and spatial patterns of the interannual variability of total ozone in the tropics

    The recently constructed gridded Merged Ozone Data (MOD) set, combining the monthly mean column abundances collected by the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) and the Solar Backscatter Ultraviolet (SBUV and SBUV/2) instruments, provides a nearly continuous record from late 1978 to 2000 on a 5° × 10° latitude-longitude grid. The precision of these measurements and their calibration allow very small signals, ∼1% of total column ozone, to be clearly seen. Using MOD, we have carried out an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) study of the temporal and spatial patterns of the interannual variability of total column ozone in the tropics. The first four EOFs of our study capture over 93% of the variance of the deseasonalized data. The leading two EOFs of our study, respectively accounting for 42% and 33% of the variance, display structures attributable to the quasi-biennial oscillation(QBO), with influence from a decadal oscillation. The third EOF (15% of the variance) represents an interaction between the QBO and an annual cycle. The fourth EOF (3% of the variance) is related to the El Niño - Southern Oscillation. This EOF decomposition is robust; nearly identical patterns occur in the decomposition of various equatorial latitude bands of MOD and similar patterns occur in the analysis of the deseasonalized TOMS data set, a shorter record with a more finely resolved spatial grid. For comparison, similar decompositions were performed for dynamical fields from the reanalysis product from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and the National Center for Atmospheric Research. Using these analyses, we found possible connections between the deduced patterns in ozone and the climate variables

    We report a laboratory measurement of absolute emission cross sections of both the Lyman bands (B^1Σ_u^+→X^1Σ_g^+) and Werner bands (C^1Π_u→X^1Π_g^+) of H_2 by electron impact over the energy range from threshold to 400 eV with the same optical system. We find the emission cross section for the B^1Σ_u^+→X^1Σ_g^+ transition at 100 eV to be (3.55±0.8) × 10^(−17) cm^2 (2.7 × 10^(−17) cm^2, direct excitation, 0.85 × 10^(−17) cm^2, cascading) and the emission cross section for the C^1Π_u→X^1Σ_g^+ transition at 100 eV to be (3.1±0.6) × 10^(−17) cm^2 (cascading is estimated to be not present). The cross-section ratio Qc/Qb for direct excitation is 1.21±0.30 at 300 eV in excellent agreement with published values for this ratio from theoretical calculations and experimental data of the optical oscillator strengths. We measure the cross section for cascading to the B state to be 24±10% of the total emission cross section both at 100 and 300 eV. We show that cascading increases to 51±20% of the total cross section of the B state at 20 eV. The vibrational population distribution of the B state is found to be a function of electron-impact energy as the importance of cascading relative to direct excitation changes with electron-impact energy

    Developmental changes in regulation of the Na+, K+-ATPase α3 isoform by thyroid hormone in ferret heart

    AbstractFerret heart expresses the α1- as well as the α3-isoform of the Na+, K+-ATPase. We have shown previously that the α3 isoform is differentially upregulated during postnatal cardiac development and that in adult ferrets expression of α3 is not responsive to regulation by thyroid hormone (TH). Since developmental-stage dependent effects of TH have been reported previously, the present study examined whether effects of TH on expression of the Na+, K+-ATPase isoforms in ferret heart is modulated during development and possible mechanisms were examined. Ferrets of different age groups were treated with TH and the relative abundance of Na+, K+-ATPase isoforms in ferret myocardium was determined by immunoblotting. Thyroid hormone (T3; 50 μg/100 g body weight on 3 alternating days, s.c.) increased protein levels of the α3 isoform, but not that of α1 or β1, in myocardium of 5-day-old and 3-week-old ferrets. By contrast, in myocardium of 6- and 8-week-old ferrets T3 failed to increase protein levels of α1 and α3. To determine whether elevated plasma levels of TH during development plays a role in the transition, mature ferrets were first made hypothyroid before TH treatment. In these hypothyroid ferrets expression of the α3 isoform remained unresponsive to TH (T4, 0.5 mg/kg for 7 days, s.c.). The transition from TH-responsive to TH-unresponsive appears to be isoform-specific because in skeletal muscle of 8-week-old ferrets and in hypothyroid ferrets the α2 isoform is upregulated by TH. Finally, there appears to be functional thyroid hormone receptors throughout development because in each age group TH effectively induced expression of α-MHC in the myocardium. In conclusion, these findings demonstrate that expression of α3 isoform in the myocardium of newborn ferret is responsive to TH; however, the responsiveness terminates between 3- and 6-weeks of age. Neither elevated endogenous TH level nor a lack of functional thyroid hormone receptor appears to be responsible for the transition from TH-responsive to TH-unresponsive
