Quantum Bit Commitment with a Composite Evidence

Entanglement-based attacks, which are subtle and powerful, are usually believed to render quantum bit commitment insecure. We point out that the no-go argument leading to this view implicitly assumes the evidence-of-commitment to be a monolithic quantum system. We argue that more general evidence structures, allowing for a composite, hybrid (classical-quantum) evidence, conduce to improved security. In particular, we present and prove the security of the following protocol: Bob sends Alice an anonymous state. She inscribes her commitment bb by measuring part of it in the + (for b=0b = 0) or ×\times (for b=1b=1) basis. She then communicates to him the (classical) measurement outcome RxR_x and the part-measured anonymous state interpolated into other, randomly prepared qubits as her evidence-of-commitment.Comment: 6 pages, minor changes, journal reference adde

Analytical Blowup Solutions to the Pressureless Navier-Stokes-Poisson Equations with Density-dependent Viscosity in R^N

We study the N-dimensional pressureless Navier--Stokes-Poisson equations with density-dependent viscosity. With the extension of the blowup solutions for the Euler-Poisson equations, the analytical blowup solutions,in radial symmetry, in R^N are constructed.Comment: 12 Pages, more detail in the introduction to explain the validity of the mode

Classical capacity of the lossy bosonic channel: the exact solution

The classical capacity of the lossy bosonic channel is calculated exactly. It is shown that its Holevo information is not superadditive, and that a coherent-state encoding achieves capacity. The capacity of far-field, free-space optical communications is given as an example.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures (revised version

Molecular emission near metal interfaces: the polaritonic regime

The strong coupling of a dense layer of molecular excitons with surface-plasmon modes in a metal gives rise to polaritons (hybrid light-matter states) called plexcitons. Surface plasmons cannot directly emit into (or be excited by) free-space photons due to the fact that energy and momentum conservation cannot be simultaneously satisfied in photoluminescence. Most plexcitons are also formally non-emissive, even though they can radiate via molecules upon localization due to disorder and decoherence. However, a fraction of them are bright even in the presence of such deleterious processes. In this letter, we theoretically discuss the superradiant emission properties of these bright plexcitons, which belong to the upper energy branch and reveal huge photoluminescence enhancements compared to bare excitons. Our study generalizes the well-known problem of molecular emission next to a metal interface to collective molecular states and provides new design principles for the control of photophysical properties of molecular aggregates using polaritonic strategies.Comment: Replaced previous version, noticing that van Hove anomalies are only observed in the direct and reflected contributions of photoluminescence, but they cancel out when added up in the total photoluminescence. The correct phenomenology is that enhancements of photoluminescence are still huge (not infinite) and are near (not exactly at) the critical poin

Quantum Communications with Compressed Decoherence Using Bright Squeezed Light

We propose a scheme for long-distance distribution of quantum entanglement in which the entanglement between qubits at intermediate stations of the channel is established by using bright light pulses in squeezed states coupled to the qubits in cavities with a weak dispersive interaction. The fidelity of the entanglement between qubits at the neighbor stations (10 km apart from each other) obtained by postselection through the balanced homodyne detection of 7 dB squeezed pulses can reach F=0.99 without using entanglement purification, at same time, the probability of successful generation of entanglement is 0.34.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

Exploring Hong Kong Chinese guidance teachers' positive beliefs: a focus group study

    Get PDF
The author reports the findings on the positive beliefs of guidance teachers for school guidance. Five focus groups, involving 24 secondary school guidance teachers in Hong Kong, were conducted. Five categories on positive beliefs emerged from the data: Care and concern for students, Guidance for educating the whole person, Students' individual needs for growth, Growth and change through the helping process, and Demand for guidance and counselling training. The implications of the findings were discussed from the perspective of implementing a whole school approach through the comprehensive school guidance programme. © 2003 Kluwer Academic Publishers.postprin

PPM demodulation for Reed-Solomon decoding for the optical space channel

    Get PDF
The use of Reed-Solomon (RS) block codes over the pulse position modulated (PPM) frames to obtain the largest degree of error correction is considered. Since RS codes can correct both symbol errors and symbol erasures, a question arises as to the best way to demodulate the PPM laser fields in order to generate the input symbols for the RS decoder. The method selected for demodulating (converting the received laser field to digital symbols) defines the erasure and transmitted symbols of the laser link, and therefore determines the work error probabilities of the system. Several demodulating schemes are considered, and the effect of each on RS decoding performance computed. This computation was carried out for various optical receiver models. It is shown that simple threshold decisioning of pulse slots produces performance that degrades as the background noise increases. This is caused by the generation of too many erasures for the RS decoder to handle. A decision scheme, delta-max demodulation which offers improvement over threshold decisioning by redefining the generation of an erasure is proposed
