Molecular genetic analysis of the Chinese Erhualian pig breed
The Chinese Erhualian is one of the most prolific pig breeds in the world, but it is in danger of being replaced by other exotic pig breeds because of its slow growth rate and high fat content in the body. To obtain some genetic information for conservation, we analysed the Erhualian pigs by using a PCR-RFLP for the calcium-release-channel (CRC) gene, nine polymorphic microsatellites and the complete mtDNA D-loop sequences, and compared these data with those from other pig breeds from Europe and Asian. The PCR-RFLP analysis of the CRC gene showed that the frequency of the C allele associated with stress resistance was 100% in the Erhualian pigs. Neighbour-Joining trees constructed on the basis of mtDNA D-loop sequences and the microsatellite analysis clearly showed that the Erhualian pigs were located in a separate branch. These data suggest that the Erhualian pigs are different from other breeds. Microsatellite analysis showed that the average allele number (5.3/locus) in the Erhualian pig was intermediate as compared with that (4.8-7.0/locus) in the three European pig breeds. The expected heterozygosity was higher in the Erhualian pig (0.78) than that in these European pig breeds (0.59-0.72), whereas the observed heterozygosity was higher in the European breeds (0.51-0.64) than in the Erhualian pig (0.46). In the Erhualian pig, the fixation index (FIS) was as high as 0.41. These data suggest a high level of inbreeding and/or subpopulation in the Erhualian pigs. For conservation of the germplasm in the Erhualian pigs, it is necessary to take measures to reduce inbreeding and/or subpopulation.

Characterization and Optical Properties of the Single Crystalline SnS Nanowire Arrays
The SnS nanowire arrays have been successfully synthesized by the template-assisted pulsed electrochemical deposition in the porous anodized aluminum oxide template. The investigation results showed that the as-synthesized nanowires are single crystalline structures and they have a highly preferential orientation. The ordered SnS nanowire arrays are uniform with a diameter of 50 nm and a length up to several tens of micrometers. The synthesized SnS nanowires exhibit strong absorption in visible and near-infrared spectral region and the direct energy gapEgof SnS nanowires is 1.59 eV
Impact of glycaemic control on circulating endothelial progenitor cells and arterial stiffness in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
Topics: Basic science, translational and clinical researchPoster PresentationThis journal supplement contains abstracts from the 17th MRC; Dept. of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong KongINTRODUCTION: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) have increased risk of endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness. Levels of circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are also reduced in hyperglycaemic states. However, the relationships between glycaemic control, levels of EPCs and arterial stiffness are unknown. Grouted jetted precast concrete sheet piles: Method, experiments, and applications
This paper introduces an innovative technology - grouted jetted precast concrete piling - that increases the efficiency of piling operations in coastal regions. The technology includes the following steps: (i) casting concrete piles factory-designed especially for jetting and grouting; (ii) jetting to drive the concrete piles with a crane on a floating ship or platform into soil; and (iii) grouting to enhance the sheet pile connections and to increase the pile bearing capacity. This technology was applied to a number of piling construction projects at the mouth of the Yellow River Delta in China, and this experience demonstrated that it is a robust, fast track, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly piling method. © 2006 NRC Canada.published_or_final_versio
Dust-free quasars in the early Universe
The most distant quasars known, at redshifts z=6, generally have properties
indistinguishable from those of lower-redshift quasars in the rest-frame
ultraviolet/optical and X-ray bands. This puzzling result suggests that these
distant quasars are evolved objects even though the Universe was only seven per
cent of its current age at these redshifts. Recently one z=6 quasar was shown
not to have any detectable emission from hot dust, but it was unclear whether
that indicated different hot-dust properties at high redshift or if it is
simply an outlier. Here we report the discovery of a second quasar without
hot-dust emission in a sample of 21 z=6 quasars. Such apparently hot-dust-free
quasars have no counterparts at low redshift. Moreover, we demonstrate that the
hot-dust abundance in the 21 quasars builds up in tandem with the growth of the
central black hole, whereas at low redshift it is almost independent of the
black hole mass. Thus z=6 quasars are indeed at an early evolutionary stage,
with rapid mass accretion and dust formation. The two hot-dust-free quasars are
likely to be first-generation quasars born in dust-free environments and are
too young to have formed a detectable amount of hot dust around them.Comment: To be published in Nature on the 18 March 2010
High Frequency Characteristics of Fe65Co35 Alloy Cluster-Assembled Films Prepared By Energetic Cluster Deposition
Size-monodispersed Fe(65)Co(35) alloy clusters whose average sizes ranged between 7 and 12 nm were obtained using a plasma-gas-condensation (PGC)-type cluster deposition apparatus. Positively charged clusters in a cluster beam were accelerated electrically and deposited onto a negatively biased substrate together with neutral clusters from the same cluster source, leading to formation of a high-density Fe(65)Co(35) alloy cluster-assembled films with soft magnetic properties. High frequency magnetic characteristics were studied for these films prepared at room temperature by an energetic cluster deposition with and without O(2) gas addition into a cluster deposition chamber

Synthesis and characterisation of lamellar ZnS nanosheets containing intercalated diamines
A solvothermal method has been used to preparehybrid inorganic-organic composites with a lamellar structure in which layers of wurtzite ZnS are separated by intercalated diamine molecules. A hybrid composite prepared with diethylenetriamine has been isolated and characterisedand its structure and properties compared with those of the composite prepared using ethylenediamine. Comparative structural and morphological studies of the two lamellar hybrid composites are described on the basis of powder XRD, electron and scanning probe microscopies and thermal analysis of the materials
Incipient Resistance of Helicoverpa punctigera to the Cry2Ab Bt Toxin in Bollgard II® Cotton
Combinations of dissimilar insecticidal proteins (“pyramids”) within transgenic plants are predicted to delay the evolution of pest resistance for significantly longer than crops expressing a single transgene. Field-evolved resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) transgenic crops has been reported for first generation, single-toxin varieties and the Cry1 class of proteins. Our five year data set shows a significant exponential increase in the frequency of alleles conferring Cry2Ab resistance in Australian field populations of Helicoverpa punctigera since the adoption of a second generation, two-toxin Bt cotton expressing this insecticidal protein. Furthermore, the frequency of cry2Ab resistance alleles in populations from cropping areas is 8-fold higher than that found for populations from non-cropping regions. This report of field evolved resistance to a protein in a dual-toxin Bt-crop has precisely fulfilled the intended function of monitoring for resistance; namely, to provide an early warning of increases in frequencies that may lead to potential failures of the transgenic technology. Furthermore, it demonstrates that pyramids are not ‘bullet proof’ and that rapid evolution to Bt toxins in the Cry2 class is possible
