    Price Convergence and Market Integration in China

    Whether China has successfully transformed from a formally centrally-controlled economy to a market economy is an issue of immense interest and considerable debate. The current study complements the received literature by testing price movements in China using panel data of monthly price indexes across 36 major Chinese cities over a thirteen-year period. By so doing, it extends the early work by Fan and Wei (2006) and thereby adds to the literature in four main aspects. First, price index data provide a wider coverage of all goods traded in the market than a group of individual commodity prices. Thus, it has more relevant implications for monetary and other macroeconomic policies. Second, as Taylor (2001) notes, there are crucial differences of methodologies in the study of price convergence between individual commodity data and index data. Thus, the present study not only further examines market integration in China, but also provides a comparative study of price index movements in a major transitional economy with for example the study for the US by Cecchetti, Mark, and Sonora (2002). Third, a recently developed new nonlinear unit root test is applied in this paper, which is more relevant to our study than other traditional linear unit root tests. Fourth, we developed a new nonlinear half-life estimation procedure that is consistent with the concept of the linear counterpart. We find that not only price indexes do converge to the law of one price in China but also the half life of price index convergence is relatively quick (about 5 to 16 months in the linear cases, and 7 to 24 months in the nonlinear situation)

    Single-nucleotide polymorphism versus microsatellite markers in a combined linkage and segregation analysis of a quantitative trait

    Increasingly, single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers are being used in preference to microsatellite markers. However, methods developed for microsatellites may be problematic when applied to SNP markers. We evaluated the results of using SNPs vs. microsatellites in Monte Carlo Markov chain (MCMC) oligogenic combined segregation and linkage analysis methods. These methods were developed with microsatellite markers in mind. We selected chromosome 7 from the Collaborative Study on the Genetics of Alcoholism dataset for analysis because linkage to an electrophysiological trait had been reported there. We found linkage in the same region of chromosome 7 with the Affymetrix SNP data, the Illumina SNP data, and the microsatellite marker data. The MCMC sampler appears to mix with both types of data. The sampler implemented in this MCMC oligogenic combined segregation and linkage analysis appears to handle SNP data as well as microsatellite data and it is possible that the localizations with the SNP data are better

    Effect of Peierls transition in armchair carbon nanotube on dynamical behaviour of encapsulated fullerene

    The changes of dynamical behaviour of a single fullerene molecule inside an armchair carbon nanotube caused by the structural Peierls transition in the nanotube are considered. The structures of the smallest C20 and Fe@C20 fullerenes are computed using the spin-polarized density functional theory. Significant changes of the barriers for motion along the nanotube axis and rotation of these fullerenes inside the (8,8) nanotube are found at the Peierls transition. It is shown that the coefficients of translational and rotational diffusions of these fullerenes inside the nanotube change by several orders of magnitude. The possibility of inverse orientational melting, i.e. with a decrease of temperature, for the systems under consideration is predicted.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl

    Paucity of CD4+ Natural Killer T (NKT) Lymphocytes in Sooty Mangabeys Is Associated with Lack of NKT Cell Depletion after SIV Infection

    Lack of chronic immune activation in the presence of persistent viremia is a key feature that distinguishes nonpathogenic simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection in natural hosts from pathogenic SIV and HIV infection. To elucidate novel mechanisms downmodulating immune activation in natural hosts of SIV infection, we investigated natural killer T (NKT) lymphocytes in sooty mangabeys. NKT lymphocytes are a potent immunoregulatory arm of the innate immune system that recognize glycolipid antigens presented on the nonpolymorphic MHC-class I-like CD1d molecules. In a cross-sectional analysis of 50 SIV-negative and 50 naturally SIV-infected sooty mangabeys, ligand α-galactosylceramide loaded CD1d tetramers co-staining with Vα24-positive invariant NKT lymphocytes were detected at frequencies ≥0.002% of circulating T lymphocytes in approximately half of the animals. In contrast to published reports in Asian macaques, sooty mangabey NKT lymphocytes consisted of CD8+ and CD4/CD8 double-negative T lymphocytes that were CXCR3-positive and CCR5-negative suggesting that they trafficked to sites of inflammation without being susceptible to SIV infection. Consistent with these findings, there was no difference in the frequency or phenotype of NKT lymphocytes between SIV-negative and SIV-infected sooty mangabeys. On stimulation with α-galactosylceramide loaded on human CD1d molecules, sooty mangabey NKT lymphocytes underwent degranulation and secreted IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-2, IL-13, and IL-10, indicating the presence of both effector and immunoregulatory functional capabilities. The unique absence of CD4+ NKT lymphocytes in sooty mangabeys, combined with their IL-10 cytokine-secreting ability and preservation following SIV infection, raises the possibility that NKT lymphocytes might play a role in downmodulating immune activation in SIV-infected sooty mangabeys

    Loss of Effector and Anti-Inflammatory Natural Killer T Lymphocyte Function in Pathogenic Simian Immunodeficiency Virus Infection

    Chronic immune activation is a key determinant of AIDS progression in HIV-infected humans and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected macaques but is singularly absent in SIV-infected natural hosts. To investigate whether natural killer T (NKT) lymphocytes contribute to the differential modulation of immune activation in AIDS-susceptible and AIDS-resistant hosts, we compared NKT function in macaques and sooty mangabeys in the absence and presence of SIV infection. Cynomolgus macaques had significantly higher frequencies of circulating invariant NKT lymphocytes compared to both rhesus macaques and AIDS-resistant sooty mangabeys. Despite this difference, mangabey NKT lymphocytes were functionally distinct from both macaque species in their ability to secrete significantly more IFN-γ, IL-13, and IL-17 in response to CD1d/α-galactosylceramide stimulation. While NKT number and function remained intact in SIV-infected mangabeys, there was a profound reduction in NKT activation-induced, but not mitogen-induced, secretion of IFN-γ, IL-2, IL-10, and TGF-β in SIV-infected macaques. SIV-infected macaques also showed a selective decline in CD4+ NKT lymphocytes which correlated significantly with an increase in circulating activated memory CD4+ T lymphocytes. Macaques with lower pre-infection NKT frequencies showed a significantly greater CD4+ T lymphocyte decline post SIV infection. The disparate effect of SIV infection on NKT function in mangabeys and macaques could be a manifestation of their differential susceptibility to AIDS. Alternately, these data also raise the possibility that loss of anti-inflammatory NKT function promotes chronic immune activation in pathogenic SIV infection, while intact NKT function helps to protect natural hosts from developing immunodeficiency and aberrant immune activation

    Irreversibility of pressure induced boron speciation change in glass

    It is known that the coordination number (CN) of atoms or ions in many materials increases through application of sufficiently high pressure. This also applies to glassy materials. In boron-containing glasses, trigonal BO 3 units can be transformed into tetrahedral BO 4 under pressure. However, one of the key questions is whether the pressure-quenched CN change in glass is reversible upon annealing below the ambient glass transition temperature (T g). Here we address this issue by performing 11 B NMR measurements on a soda lime borate glass that has been pressure-quenched at ∼0.6 GPa near T g. The results show a remarkable phenomenon, i.e., upon annealing at 0.9T g the pressure-induced change in CN remains unchanged, while the pressurised values of macroscopic properties such as density, refractive index, and hardness are relaxing. This suggests that the pressure-induced changes in macroscopic properties of soda lime borate glasses compressed up to ∼0.6 GPa are not attributed to changes in the short-range order in the glass, but rather to changes in overall atomic packing density and medium-range structures

    Dynamical Mass Generation of Composite Dirac Fermions and Fractional Quantum Hall Effects near Charge Neutrality in Graphene

    We develop a composite Dirac fermion theory for the fractional quantum Hall effects (QHE) near charge neutrality in graphene. We show that the interactions between the composite Dirac fermions lead to dynamical mass generation through exciton condensation. The four-fold spin-valley degeneracy is fully lifted due to the mass generation and the exchange effects such that the odd-denominator fractional QHE observed in the vicinity of charge neutrality can be understood in terms of the integer QHE of the composite Dirac fermions. At the filling factor ν=1/2\nu=1/2, we show that the massive composite Dirac fermion liquid is unstable against chiral p-wave pairing for weak Coulomb interactions and the ground state is a paired nonabelian state described by the Moore-Read Pfaffian in the long wavelength limit.Comment: Extended, published version, 9 pages, 3 figure

    Precision Targeting of Bacterial Pathogen Via Bi-Functional Nanozyme Activated by Biofilm Microenvironment

    Human dental caries is an intractable biofilm-associated disease caused by microbial interactions and dietary sugars on the host\u27s teeth. Commensal bacteria help control opportunistic pathogens via bioactive products such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). However, high-sugar consumption disrupts homeostasis and promotes pathogen accumulation in acidic biofilms that cause tooth-decay. Here, we exploit the pathological (sugar-rich/acidic) conditions using a nanohybrid system to increase intrinsic H2O2 production and trigger pH-dependent reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation for efficient biofilm virulence targeting. The nanohybrid contains glucose-oxidase that catalyzes glucose present in biofilms to increase intrinsic H2O2, which is converted by iron oxide nanoparticles with peroxidase-like activity into ROS in acidic pH. Notably, it selectively kills Streptococcus mutans (pathogen) without affecting Streptococcus oralis (commensal) via preferential pathogen-binding and in situ ROS generation. Furthermore, nanohybrid treatments potently reduced dental caries in a rodent model. Compared to chlorhexidine (positive-control), which disrupted oral microbiota diversity, the nanohybrid had significant higher efficacy without affecting soft-tissues and the oral-gastrointestinal microbiomes, while modulating dental health-associated microbial activity in vivo. The data reveal therapeutic precision of a bi-functional hybrid nanozyme against a biofilm-related disease in a controlled-manner activated by pathological conditions. © 2020 The Author

    Using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) to assess suicidal ideation among pregnant women in Lima, Peru.

    We sought to examine the concordance of two suicidal ideation items from the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), to evaluate the prevalence of suicidal ideation among pregnant women, and to assess the co-occurrence of suicidal ideation with antepartum depressive symptoms. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,517 pregnant women attending prenatal care clinics in Lima, Peru. Item 9 of the PHQ-9 assesses suicidal ideation over the last 14 days while item 10 of the EPDS assesses suicidal ideation in the past 7 days. The two suicidal ideation items have a high concordance rate (84.2 %) but a moderate agreement (the Cohen's kappa = 0.42). Based on the PHQ-9 and the EPDS, 15.8 and 8.8 % of participants screened positive for suicidal ideation, respectively. Assessed by the PHQ-9, 51 % of participants with suicidal ideation had probable depression. In prenatal care clinics, screening for suicidal ideation is needed for women with and without depressive symptoms. Future studies are needed to identify additional predictors of antepartum suicidality, determine the appropriate duration of reporting period for suicidal ideation screening, and assess the percentage of individuals with positive responses to the two suicidal ideation items at high risk of planning and attempting suicide.This research was supported by an award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Institute of Child Health and Human Development (R01-HD-059835).
