    Numerical investigation of the interactions between solitary waves and pile breakwaters using BGK-based methods

    AbstractThe interactions between a solitary wave, which can be used to model a leading tsunami wave, and a pile breakwater made of circular cylinders are numerically investigated. We use the depth-averaged shallow water equations, which are solved by the finite volume method based on the Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook (BGK) model. The numerical results are compared with the experimental data, which yields very good agreement between them when the ratio of wave height to water depth is small (<0.25). As this ratio exceeds the value of 0.25, the larger the ratio is, the bigger deviation of numerical results from experimental data is observed, the possible reasons for this observation are discussed. Both numerical and experimental results indicate that the transmission of the solitary wave decreases and the reflection of the wave increases with reducing gaps between the adjacent cylinders, and that both transmission and reflection coefficients are not very sensitive to the variation in wave height

    ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITIES IN VITRO AND HEPATOPROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF NELUMBO NUCIFERA LEAVES IN VIVO

    Background: Herbal medicines played a major role in the treatment of hepatic disorders, and a number of medicinal plants and their compounds were widely used for the treatment of these disorders, and oxidant stress injury was one of the mechanism of liver injury. Materials and Methods: Antioxidant activity of Nelumbo nucifera leaves (NU) extracts was assayed by the methods of scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2´-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzo- thiazoline-6-sulfonicacid) (ABTS) radical and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) in vitro. By intraperitoneal injection carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) to establish acute liver injury model in mice, the levels of Glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (GPT), glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and the content of and maleicdialdehyde (MDA) were detected to evaluate hepatoprotective effect of NU using corresponding test kit. Results: EtOAC (NUEA) and n-BuOH extracts (NUBU) of N. nucifera leaves had good scavenging DPPH and ABTS radical activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power in vitro. DPPH radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power of NUEA (IC50= 6.68±0.29 µg/mL, RACT50=1749.82±67.03 µmol/g) and NUBU (IC50= 4.61±0.01 µg/mL, RACT50=1995.27±135.71 µmol/g ) were higher than that of BHT (IC50=8.76±0.20 µg/mL, RACT50=1581.68±97.41 µmol/g) and Dangfeiliganning (IC50=28.06±0.17 µg/mL, RACT50=1028.55±3.28 µmol/g). ABTS radical scavenging activity of NUEA (IC50= 5.32±0.12 µg/mL) and NUBU (IC50= 8.16±0.27 µg/mL) were higher than that of Dangfeiliganning (IC50= 9.76±0.16 µg/mL). Thus, hepatoprotective effect of NUEA and NUBU was evaluated on CCl4-induced acute liver injury mice.     A brief review of the phase-field-based lattice Boltzmann method for multiphase flows

    In this paper, we present a brief overview of the phase-field-based lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) that is a distinct and efficient numerical algorithm for multiphase flow problems. We first give an introduction to the mathematical theory of phase-field models for multiphase flows, and then present some recent progress on the LBM for the phase-field models which are composed of the classic Navier-Stokes equations and the Cahn-Hilliard or Allen-Cahn equation.     Prognostic value and immune-infiltration pattern of FOXD3-AS1 in patients with glioma

    Gliomas are difficult-to-treat brain tumors due to their aggressive nature, rapid proliferation, and high invasiveness (Zhang et al., J Cell Biochem, 2019, 120 (9), 15106–15118; Ge et al., Int J Biochem Cell Biol, 2021, 139, 106054). FOXD3-AS1 has been identified as an emerging potential target for tumor prediction and treatment in many studies (Qin et al., Front Oncol, 2021, 11, 688027). However, the utility of FOXD3-AS1 has not been reported in glioma patients (Li et al., Cancer Manag Res, 2021, 13, 9037–9048). The differential profiles of FOXD3-AS1 in TCGA–GBMLGG database were analyzed across clinical subgroups. The analysis of overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), and progression-free interval (PFI) revealed that a high level of FOXD3-AS1 was associated with a poor prognosis and survival outcome. Based on the Cox regression analysis, FOXD3-AS1 was found to be a high-risk factor for glioma that affects prognosis outcomes independently. More importantly, because oxidative stress is closely linked to glioma prognosis, we focused on the potential mechanisms of six oxidative stress co-expressed genes with FOXD3-AS1. In addition, the predictive value of FOXD3-AS1 was determined for each clinical subgroup status. The ROC curve results showed that FOXD3-AS1 had a good predictive performance. A stratified clinicopathological subgroup analysis revealed that high expression of FOXD3-AS1 is associated with a poor prognosis. This also indicates a link between FOXD3-AS1 and tumorigenesis and prognosis, which has potential application value. Furthermore, the immune cell infiltration of FOXD3-AS1 and the signal marker correlation suggested that immune cell infiltration differed significantly between immune cell subsets. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to investigate FOXD3-AS1 in glioma and how it may modulate GBM and LGG immune microenvironments. Furthermore, FOXD3-AS1 was detected in tumor and paraneoplastic tissues using RT–qPCR. Transwell analysis verified the migration and invasion of the FOXD3-AS1 knockout group in vitro to a certain extent. In conclusion, FOXD3-AS1 can be used as a prognostic indicator for GBM and LGG, and it is closely related to immune infiltration and response to oxidative stress, which may contribute to the advancement of glioma immunotherapy research

    Length effect on bending properties and evaluation of shear modulus of parallel bamboo strand lumber

    One hundred sixty-two parallel bamboo strand lumber (PBSL) beams were tested for the bending properties under three-point bending with variable span. Two typical failure types were classified, type I was tension failure of the bamboo fiber located below the neutral axis at mid-span, while type II was shear failure which was mainly found in specimens with large depth-span ratio. The shear modulus G LR of PBSL was also calculated according to Timoshenko’s bending theory. To evaluate the shear modulus, 45° off-axis compression tests had been done. The results showed that the mean values of shear modulus for G LT, G TR, and G LR are 1254.5 MPa, 408.1 MPa, and 716.4 MPa, respectively. The bending test result was compared with the shear modulus measured by 45° off-axis compression test. It was found that the shear modulus measured by three-point bending test with variable span was significantly less than the shear modulus obtained by 45° off-axis compression test. The empirical equation of shear factor s corresponding to depth-span ratio h/l was proposed. The calculation results gained from the proposed formula are in good agreement with the 45° off-axis compression test results
