    Variations in characteristics of the barents branch of the Atlantic Water in the Nansen Basin under the influence of atmospheric circulation over the Barents Sea

    The thermohaline structure of the Arctic Basin (AB) of the Arctic Ocean (AO) is determined to a great extent by an intermediate water layer existing under ice at a depth varying from 100 to 700–1000 m. The water layer is formed by warm North Atlantic Water (AW), which enters the AB by two ways: through Fram Strait and the Barents Sea (Fig. 1). The AW arriving to the AB via Fram Strait extends further eastward along the continental slope of the Eurasian Arctic region and forms the Fram Branch (FBAW). The Barents Branch of the AW (BBAW) was formed by the North Atlantic Water entering the Barents Sea between the Spitsbergen Archipelago and the Scandinavian Peninsula.     Social adaptation and quality of life in reproductive-aged women with epilepsy

    The quality-of-life indicators are integral characteristics of treatment and diagnostic measures in modern epileptology.Objective: to assess the social adaptation and quality of life in reproductive-aged women with epilepsy.Subjects and methods. A sociological survey using the Quality of Life Satisfaction questionnaire and the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) was carried out in 352 women living in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.Results. At the time of the study, 21.3% of the patients were unemployed. Disability related to epilepsy was in 13.1% of women, mainly in those with cryptogenic (22.3%) and symptomatic (14.4%) epilepsy. Most of the women were unsatisfied with their job activity (55.1%), financial status (64.6%), and physical health (65.3%). Mainly the patients with symptomatic epilepsy reported dissatisfaction with their psychological status. The patients had employment problems (12.5%), inability to work in their specialty (12.5%) and to get the desired specialty (10.3%), and labor maladaptation (8.8%). There was a preponderance of women with higher education (40.3%) and 21.3% continued their studies. Warm family relations and help from relatives and friends (65.4%), hope for their recovery (50.7%), contacts with their friends (30.1%), and plans for future (34.6%) were important for the women to control the disease.Conclusions. The findings suggest that family, personal, maternity problems are more important causes of social maladaptation in epileptic women

    Fractional ac Josephson effect in unconventional superconductors

    For certain orientations of Josephson junctions between two p_x-wave or two d-wave superconductors, the subgap Andreev bound states produce a 4pi-periodic relation between the Josephson current I and the phase difference phi: I ~ sin(phi/2). Consequently, the ac Josephson current has the fractional frequency eV/h, where V is the dc voltage. In the tunneling limit, the Josephson current is proportional to the first power (not square) of the electron tunneling amplitude. Thus, the Josephson current between unconventional superconductors is carried by single electrons, rather than by Cooper pairs. The fractional ac Josephson effect can be observed experimentally by measuring frequency spectrum of microwave radiation from the junction.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, RevTEX 4; v2. - minor typos corrected in proof

    [For the English abstract and full text of the article please see the attached PDF-File (English version follows Russian version)].ABSTRACT The article considers the need to modernize the heat supply system of railway stations within the framework of the main guidelines of the energy strategy of the Russian Federation until 2030. The main park of boiler rooms is equipped with the aged machinery that by some features does not meet the standards of environmental friendliness, safety and efficiency. The article presents the main indicators of boiler rooms of a new type. The comparative analysis of the characteristics of the new and former boiler rooms as of an energy complex is suggested. The conformity of the proposed indicators to the guidelines of the energy strategy of the Russian Federation and subsequent innovations is determined. One of the conclusions of the authors is that in addition to replacing the equipment, it is necessary to conduct decentralization of the station’s heat supply system.     Current-voltage characteristic of narrow superconducting wires: bifurcation phenomena

    The current-voltage characteristics of long and narrow superconducting channels are investigated using the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations for complex order parameter. We found out that the steps in the current voltage characteristic can be associated with bifurcations of either steady or oscillatory solution. We revealed typical instabilities which induced the singularities in current-voltage characteristics, and analytically estimated period of oscillations and average voltage in the vicinity of the critical currents. Our results show that these bifurcations can substantially complicate dynamics of the order parameter and eventually lead to appearance of such phenomena as multistability and chaos. The discussed bifurcation phenomena sheds a light on some recent experimental findings

    Subcortical laminar heterotopia (double cortex syndrome) is an orphan disease with an incidence of 1 to 200,000 people in the population. The cause of the disease is mutation of the gene DCX (synonyms: DBCN, XLIS) in chromosome Xq22.3-q23. The type of inheritance is X-linked dominant. Correct diagnosis requires a high degree of skills of a neurologist/epileptologist and a radiologist. The paper describes a clinical case of the late diagnosis of double cortex syndrome in a 36-year-old woman with a long history of resistant atonic seizures and mental retardation

    Histological classification of mesial temporal sclerosis

    Mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) is the most common histopathology occurring in patients with drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy. Over the past decades, there have been various attempts to classify the variants of hippocampal neuronal cell loss in relation to postoperative outcome. However, no consensus on the common international definition and classification of MTS has been reached. The article describes the modern histological classification based on a semiquantitative hippocampal cell loss model. The publications dealing with the histological classification of mesial temporal sclerosis are reviewed
