    Chlorophyll dephytylase 1 and chlorophyll synthase: a chlorophyll salvage pathway for the turnover of photosystems I and II

    Chlorophyll (Chl) is made up of the tetrapyrrole chlorophyllide and phytol, a diterpenoid alcohol. The photosynthetic protein complexes utilize Chl for light harvesting to produce biochemical energy for plant development. However, excess light and adverse environmental conditions facilitate generation of reactive oxygen species, which damage photosystems I and II (PSI and PSII) and induce their turnover. During this process, Chl is released, and is thought to be recycled via dephytylation and rephytylation. We previously demonstrated that Chl recycling in Arabidopsis under heat stress is mediated by the enzymes chlorophyll dephytylase 1 (CLD1) and chlorophyll synthase (CHLG) using chlg and cld1 mutants. Here, we show that the mutants with high CLD1/CHLG ratio, by different combinations of chlg‐1 (a knock‐down mutant) and the hyperactive cld1‐1 alleles, develop necrotic leaves when grown under long‐ and short‐day, but not continuous light conditions, owing to the accumulation of chlorophyllide in the dark. Combination of chlg‐1 with cld1‐4 (a knock‐out mutant) leads to reduced chlorophyllide accumulation and necrosis. The operation of CLD1 and CHLG as a Chl salvage pathway was also explored in the context of Chl recycling during the turnover of Chl‐binding proteins of the two photosystems.     Muckenhoupt-type weights and the intrinsic structure in Bessel Setting

In this paper, we study the Muckenhoupt-type weights which reveal the intrinsic structure in this Bessel setting along the line of Muckenhoupt--Stein and Andersen--Kerman. Besides, exploiting more properties of the weights Ap,λA_{p,\lambda} introduced by Andersen--Kerman, we introduce a new class A~p,λ\widetilde{A}_{p,\lambda} such that the Hardy--Littlewood maximal function is bounded on the weighted LwpL^p_w space if and only if ww is in A~p,λ\widetilde A_{p,\lambda}. Moreover, along the line of Coifman--Rochberg--Weiss, we investigate the commutator [b,Rλ][b,R_\lambda] with Rλ:=ddx(△λ)−12R_\lambda:=\frac{d}{dx}(\triangle_\lambda)^{-\frac{1}{2}} to be the Bessel Riesz transform. We show that for w∈Ap,λw\in A_{p,\lambda}, the commutator [b,Rλ][b, R_\lambda] is bounded on weighted LwpL^p_w if and only if bb is in the BMO space associated with △λ\triangle_\lambda.Comment: 30 page

    Graphlet and Orbit Computation on Heterogeneous Graphs

    Many applications, ranging from natural to social sciences, rely on graphlet analysis for the intuitive and meaningful characterization of networks employing micro-level structures as building blocks. However, it has not been thoroughly explored in heterogeneous graphs, which comprise various types of nodes and edges. Finding graphlets and orbits for heterogeneous graphs is difficult because of the heterogeneity and abundance of semantic information. We consider heterogeneous graphs, which can be treated as colored graphs. By applying the canonical label technique, we determine the graph isomorphism problem with multiple states on nodes and edges. With minimal parameters, we build all non-isomorphic graphs and associated orbits. We provide a Python package that can be used to generate orbits for colored directed graphs and determine the frequency of orbit occurrence. Finally, we provide four examples to illustrate the use of the Python package.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

    Refractory gastric variceal bleeding secondary to splenic vein occlusion associated with abdominal lymphadenopathy

    SummarySplenic vein occlusion caused by abdominal lymphadenopathy is rare. We herein present the case of a 80-year-old man with refractory isolated gastric variceal bleeding in the absence of pancreatic or liver disease. Left-sided portal hypertension was confirmed by angiography, and para-aortic lymphadenopathy compressing the splenic vein was identified by serial abdominal computed tomography. Endoscopic sclerosing therapy failed to treat the recurring gastric variceal hemorrhage. Therefore, splenectomy was suggested and the patient was successfully treated. The patient had been variceal bleeding free for 12 months since the surgery. In patients with isolated gastric varices but without advanced liver disease, a variety of diagnostic techniques should be attempted to elucidate the nature of portal hypertension, and left-sided portal hypertension should be suspected. For those cases in which endoscopic treatment failed to treat refractory gastric variceal bleeding, splenectomy can be an effective option

    ECG Signal Super-resolution by Considering Reconstruction and Cardiac Arrhythmias Classification Loss

    With recent advances in deep learning algorithms, computer-assisted healthcare services have rapidly grown, especially for those that combine with mobile devices. Such a combination enables wearable and portable services for continuous measurements and facilitates real-time disease alarm based on physiological signals, e.g., cardiac arrhythmias (CAs) from electrocardiography (ECG). However, long-term and continuous monitoring confronts challenges arising from limitations of batteries, and the transmission bandwidth of devices. Therefore, identifying an effective way to improve ECG data transmission and storage efficiency has become an emerging topic. In this study, we proposed a deep-learning-based ECG signal super-resolution framework (termed ESRNet) to recover compressed ECG signals by considering the joint effect of signal reconstruction and CA classification accuracies. In our experiments, we downsampled the ECG signals from the CPSC 2018 dataset and subsequently evaluated the super-resolution performance by both reconstruction errors and classification accuracies. Experimental results showed that the proposed ESRNet framework can well reconstruct ECG signals from the 10-times compressed ones. Moreover, approximately half of the CA recognition accuracies were maintained within the ECG signals recovered by the ESRNet. The promising results confirm that the proposed ESRNet framework can be suitably used as a front-end process to reconstruct compressed ECG signals in real-world CA recognition scenarios

    Pulsed Wave Doppler Ultrasound Is Useful to Assess Vasomotor Response in Patients with Multiple System Atrophy and Well Correlated with Tilt Table Study

    The study aim was to assess sympathetic vasomotor response (SVR) by using pulsed wave Doppler (PWD) ultrasound in patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA) and correlate with the tilt table study. We recruited 18 male patients and 10 healthy men as controls. The SVR of the radial artery was evaluated by PWD, using inspiratory cough as a provocative maneuver. The response to head-up tilt was studied by a tilt table with simultaneous heart rate and blood pressure recording. The hemodynamic variables were compared between groups, and were examined by correlation analysis. Regarding SVR, MSA patients exhibited a prolonged latency and less heart rate acceleration following inspiratory cough. Compared with the tilt table test, the elevation of heart rate upon SVR was positively correlated to the increase of heart rate after head-up tilt. The correlation analysis indicated that the magnitude of blood pressure drop from supine to upright was positively associated with the SVR latency but negatively correlated with the heart rate changes upon SVR. The present study demonstrated that blunted heart rate response might explain MSA's vulnerability to postural challenge. PWD may be used to predict cardiovascular response to orthostatic stress upon head-up tilt in MSA patients

    Alanine aminotransferase to aspartate aminotransferase ratio and hepatitis B virus on metabolic syndrome: a community-based study

    BackgroundThe serum aminotransferase elevation in metabolic syndrome (MetS) reflected hepatosteatosis, but there is a conflict with the coexistence of viral hepatitis, especially for the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Thus, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between the alanine aminotransferase (ALT)/aspartate aminotransferase (AST) ratio, MetS, and HBV infection in a rural Taiwanese population.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis in southern Taiwan between March and December 2019. Multivariable logistic regression analyses adjusted for demographics, education, dietary behaviors, irregular exercise, substance use, and viral markers were performed to investigate the association between the ALT/AST ratio and MetS.ResultsAltogether, 2,416 participants (891 men and 1,525 women; mean age, 64.1 ± 14.9 years) were enrolled. Of the participants, 22.7% (n = 519) were seropositive for viral hepatitis. In the multivariable analysis, age [odds ratio (OR) 1.02, 95% CI 1.01–1.03, p < 0.001], ALT/AST ratio >1 (OR 2.63, 95% CI 2.15–3.21, p < 0.001), education (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.94–0.98, p < 0.001), and HBV seropositivity (OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.52–0.95, p = 0.021) were associated with the risk of MetS. The area under the curve of the ALT/AST ratio was 0.62 (95% CI 0.60–0.64, p < 0.001), and the cutoff value was >0.852 for the Youden index.ConclusionAn ALT/AST ratio >1 could be a simple index for MetS prediction during community checkups. In contrast to age and betel nut chewing, HBV seropositivity and higher education might be inversely associated with MetS. Aggressive health promotion for MetS prevention has emerged as essential in participants without HBV and with lower education levels. Further large-scale, longitudinal studies are needed to unlink these correlations
