    Subspace decomposition and critical phase selection based cumulative quality analysis for multiphase batch processes

    Quality analysis and prediction have been of great significance to ensure consistent and high product quality for chemical engineering processes. However, previous methods have rarely analyzed the cumulative quality effect which is of typical nature for batch processes. That is, with time development, the process variation will determine the final product quality in a cumulative manner. Besides, they can not get an early sense of the quality nature. In this paper, a quantitative index is defined which can check ahead of time whether the product quality result from accumulation or the addition of successive process variations and cumulative quality effect will be addressed for quality analysis and prediction of batch processes. Several crucial issues will be solved to explore the cumulative quality effect. First, a quality-relevant sequential phase partition method is proposed to separate multiple phases from batch processes by using fast search and find of density peaks clustering (FSFDP) algorithm. Second, after phase partition, a phase-wise cumulative quality analysis method is proposed based on subspace decomposition which can explore the non-repetitive quality-relevant information (NRQRI) from the process variation at each time within each phase. NRQRI refers to the quality-relevant process variations at each time that are orthogonal to those of previous time and thus represents complementary quality information which is the key index to cumulatively explain quality variations time-wise. Third, process-wise cumulative quality analysis is conducted where a critical phase selection strategy is developed to identify critical-to-cumulative-quality phases and quality predictions from critical phases are integrated to exclude influences of uncritical phases. By the two-level cumulative quality analysis (i.e., phase-wise and process-wise), it is feasible to judge whether the quality has the cumulative effect in advance and thus proper quality prediction model can be developed by identifying critical-to-cumulative-quality phases.     New Plasma Separation Glucose Oxidase-based Glucometer in Monitoring of Blood With Different PO2 Levels

    BackgroundThe PalmLab glucometer is a newly designed plasma separation glucose oxidase (GO)-based glucometer. Past studies have shown that the accuracy of GO-based glucometers is compromised when measurements are taken in patients with high PO2 levels. We performed a two-arm study comparing the fitness of the PalmLab blood glucometer with that of a standard glucose analyzer in monitoring blood glucose levels in pediatric patients, especially when arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PO2) was high.MethodsIn the first arm of the study, arterial blood samples from pediatric patients were measured by the PalmLab blood glucometer and the YSI 2302 Plus Glucose/Lactate analyzer. In the second arm of the study, venous blood samples from adult volunteers were spiked with glucose water to prepare three different levels of glucose (65, 150, and 300mg/dL) and then oxygenated to six levels of PO2 (range, 40–400mmHg). The biases of the PalmLab glucometer were calculated.ResultsA total of 162 samples were collected in the first arm of the study. Results of linear regression showed that the coefficient of determination (R2) between PalmLab glucometer and standard glucose analyzer was 0.9864. Error grid analysis revealed that all the results were within Zone A (clinically accurate estimate zone). The biases between the two systems were low at different PO2 levels. In the second arm of the study, the results were also unaffected by changes in PO2.ConclusionThe PalmLab glucometer provides accurate results in samples with high PO2 and is suitable for measuring arterial glucose levels in pediatric patients

    The role of autologous bone graft in surgical treatment of hypertrophic nonunion of midshaft clavicle fractures

    AbstractBackgroundThis study was conducted to evaluate the results of treating hypertrophic nonunion of mid-shaft clavicle fracture with a limited contact dynamic compression plate (LC-DCP) without autologous cancellous bone graft.MethodsFrom 1995 to 2008, 51 cases of hypertrophic nonunion of mid-shaft clavicle fracture were managed with open reduction and internal fixation by LC-DCP without bone graft involvement. Of these 51 cases, 30 had nonunion after failure of initial surgical treatment (Group 1), and 21 had nonunion after failure of conservative treatment (Group 2). Preoperative and postoperative case management were the same for both groups, with the average follow-up period being 20.4 months (range 18–36). Our study evaluated the radiographic results and functional outcomes of these cases according to the quick disability of arm, shoulder, and hand score.ResultsAll 51 cases resulted in uneventful unions. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups regarding patient demography, cause of injury, preoperative and postoperative functional scores, length of operation, union time, and duration of hospitalization (p>0.05).ConclusionLC-DCP fixation is an effective method for treating hypertrophic nonunion of mid-shaft clavicle fracture. Local bone graft is sufficient to achieve necessary union, and autologous bone graft from other sites of the body appears unnecessary

    Operative Treatment of Intra-articular Distal Radius Fractures Using the Small AO External Fixation Device

    BackgroundA retrospective group study was done to evaluate the effect of the small AO external fixator in the management of acute intra-articular fractures of the distal radius.MethodsBetween January 1995 and December 1996, 70 consecutive patients with articular fractures of the distal radius were treated by closed reduction and external fixation with small AO external fixators. The mean age at the time of surgery was 58.9 years (range, 14–87 years). There were 58 Colles' Barton's fractures and 12 Smith's Barton's fractures. The follow-up period was 104 months (range, 92–118 months).ResultsAll fractures united in a mean of 5.8 weeks (range, 4–10 weeks). At the final follow-up, the average range of motion was 56.3 ± 11.6° in flexion, 58.6 ± 10.7° in extension, 21.5 ± 4.2° in ulnar deviation, 9.1 ± 2.9° in radial deviation, 71.5 ± 8.5° in pronation, and 67.3 ± 9.2° in supination. Compared with the normal side, the average grip force was 87 ± 6%. The overall clinical and functional outcomes, according to the scoring system of Gartland and Werley, showed that 22 patients (31.4%) had excellent results, 36 (51.4%) had good results, 9 (12.9%) had fair results, and 3 (4.3%) had poor results.ConclusionClosed reduction and external fixation with the small AO external fixator is useful and effective in the management of displaced comminuted articular fractures of the distal radius

    On What Basis? Predicting Text Preference Via Structured Comparative Reasoning

    Comparative reasoning plays a crucial role in text preference prediction; however, large language models (LLMs) often demonstrate inconsistencies in their reasoning. While approaches like Chain-of-Thought improve accuracy in many other settings, they struggle to consistently distinguish the similarities and differences of complex texts. We introduce SC, a prompting approach that predicts text preferences by generating structured intermediate comparisons. SC begins by proposing aspects of comparison, followed by generating textual comparisons under each aspect. We select consistent comparisons with a pairwise consistency comparator that ensures each aspect's comparisons clearly distinguish differences between texts, significantly reducing hallucination and improving consistency. Our comprehensive evaluations across various NLP tasks, including summarization, retrieval, and automatic rating, demonstrate that SC equips LLMs to achieve state-of-the-art performance in text preference prediction

    An Alternative Approach for Improving Performance of Organic Photovoltaics by Light-Enhanced Annealing

    This work proposes an approach for improving the performance of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT-) based organic photovoltaics (OPVs). P3HT-based bulk heterojunction (BHJ) film can absorb the energy from 532 nm laser light and be transformed into favorable morphology. A combination of traditional thermal annealing and laser annealing improved device performance, with a slight increase in fill factor and a significant improvement in short-circuit current density. Better crystallization and a higher degree of molecular order in the thermal/laser coannealed P3HT-based BHJ film were observed through X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy
