    Different male mate location behaviour of the Glanville fritillary butterfly in different landscapes in the Tianshan Mountains, northwestern China

    In a previous study most males of the Glanville fritillary butterfly (Melitaea cinxia) were caught in valleys, whereas almost all females were distributed on slopes in the Tianshan Mountains, northwestern China. To help understand this phenomenon, male mate location behaviours were observed in different landscapes of the Tianshan Mountains. In valleys, males exhibited perching behaviour. On slopes, spatial distribution of males showed patrolling behaviour on meadows, but intermediate behaviour between perching and patrolling at forest edge. The temporal distribution of males also varied, being found on slopes from 7:00 to 18:00, but in valleys from 8:00 to 13:00 each day. Ambient temperatures were higher on slopes than those in valleys between 8:00 to 13:00. Males exhibited lower tolerance to high temperature than females, leading to the conclusion that valleys are more likely to be used by males as thermoregulation sites, rather than for mating

    Binder-Free Nickel Oxide Lamellar Layer Anchored CoOx_{x} Nanoparticles on Nickel Foam for Supercapacitor Electrodes

    To enhance the connection of electroactive materials/current collector and accelerate the transport efficiency of the electrons, a binder-free electrode composed of nickel oxide anchored CoOx_{x} nanoparticles on modified commercial nickel foam (NF) was developed. The nickel oxide layer with lamellar structure which supplied skeleton to load CoO_{x) electroactive materials directly grew on the NF surface, leading to a tight connection between the current collector and electroactive materials. The fabricated electrode exhibits a specific capacitance of 475 F/g at 1 mA/cm2^{2}. A high capacitance retention of 96% after 3000 cycles is achieved, attributed to the binding improvement at the current collector/electroactive materials interface. Moreover, an asymmetric supercapacitor with an operating voltage window of 1.4 V was assembled using oxidized NF anchored with cobalt oxide as the cathode and activated stainless steel wire mesh as the anode. The device achieves a maximum energy density of 2.43 Wh/kg and power density of 0.18 kW/kg, respectively. The modified NF substrate conducted by a facile and effective electrolysis process, which also could be applied to deposit other electroactive materials for the energy storage device

    Topography, structural and exhumation history of the Admiralty Mountains region, northern Victoria Land, Antarctica

    International audience; The Admiralty Mountains region forms the northern termination of the northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. Few quantitative data are available to reconstruct the Cenozoic morpho-tectonic evolution of this sector of the Antarctic plate, where the Admiralty Mountains region forms the northern termination of the western shoulder of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic West Antarctica Rift System. In this study we combine new low-temperature thermochronological data (apatite fission-track and (U-Th-Sm)/He analyses) with structural and topography analysis. The regional pattern of the fission-track ages shows a general tendency to older ages (80–60 Ma) associated with shortened mean track-lengths in the interior, and younger fission-track ages clustering at 38–26 Ma with long mean track-lengths in the coastal region. Differently from other regions of Victoria Land, the younger ages are found as far as 50–70 km inland. Single grain apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He ages cluster at 50–30 Ma with younger ages in the coastal domain. Topography analysis reveals that the Admiralty Mountains has high local relief, with an area close to the coast, 180 km long and 70 km large, having the highest local relief of >2500 m. This coincides with the location of the youngest fission-track ages. The shape of the area with highest local relief matches the shape of a recently detected low velocity zone beneath the northern TAM, indicating that high topography of the Admiralty Mountains region is likely sustained by a mantle thermal anomaly. We used the obtained constraints on the amount of removed crustal section to reconstruct back-eroded profiles and calculate the erosional load in order to test flexural uplift models. We found that our back-eroded profiles are better reproduced by a constant elastic thickness of intermediate values (Te = 20–30 km). This suggests that, beneath the Admiralty Mountains, the elastic properties of the lithosphere are different with respect to other TAM sectors, likely due to a stationary Cenozoic upper mantle thermal anomaly in the region

    Anomalous extensive landfast sea ice in the vicinity of Inexpressible Island, Antarctica

    On 10 December 2017, a Chinese research vessel R/V Xuelong encountered an extensive area of landfast ice offshore Inexpressible Island (Antarctica) near the location where the fifth Chinese Antarctic research station is to be built. Using multi-source satellite images and weather data, we analyzed the ice conditions during the event season and reconstructed the development of landfast ice. Two stages in late September and early October were identified as contributing to the final ice extent. These two events are highly related to local- and large-scale weather conditions. Satellite images from 2003 to 2017 showed that four in fifteen years experienced severe landfast ice conditions, suggesting that it is not a rare phenomenon

    Feature-based Transferable Disruption Prediction for future tokamaks using domain adaptation

    The high acquisition cost and the significant demand for disruptive discharges for data-driven disruption prediction models in future tokamaks pose an inherent contradiction in disruption prediction research. In this paper, we demonstrated a novel approach to predict disruption in a future tokamak only using a few discharges based on a domain adaptation algorithm called CORAL. It is the first attempt at applying domain adaptation in the disruption prediction task. In this paper, this disruption prediction approach aligns a few data from the future tokamak (target domain) and a large amount of data from the existing tokamak (source domain) to train a machine learning model in the existing tokamak. To simulate the existing and future tokamak case, we selected J-TEXT as the existing tokamak and EAST as the future tokamak. To simulate the lack of disruptive data in future tokamak, we only selected 100 non-disruptive discharges and 10 disruptive discharges from EAST as the target domain training data. We have improved CORAL to make it more suitable for the disruption prediction task, called supervised CORAL. Compared to the model trained by mixing data from the two tokamaks, the supervised CORAL model can enhance the disruption prediction performance for future tokamaks (AUC value from 0.764 to 0.890). Through interpretable analysis, we discovered that using the supervised CORAL enables the transformation of data distribution to be more similar to future tokamak. An assessment method for evaluating whether a model has learned a trend of similar features is designed based on SHAP analysis. It demonstrates that the supervised CORAL model exhibits more similarities to the model trained on large data sizes of EAST. FTDP provides a light, interpretable, and few-data-required way by aligning features to predict disruption using small data sizes from the future tokamak.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

    Inhibition of Nur77 expression and translocation by compound B6 reduces ER stress and alleviates cigarette smoke-induced inflammation and injury in bronchial epithelial cells

    Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a leading cause of death worldwide with inflammation and injury in airway epithelial cells. However, few treatment options effectively reduce severity. We previously found that Nur77 is involved in lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation and injury of lung tissue. Here, we established an in vitro model of COPD-related inflammation and injury in 16-HBE cells induced by cigarette smoke extract (CSE). In these cells, Nur77 expression and localization to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) increased following CSE treatment, as did ER stress marker (BIP, ATF4, CHOP) expression, inflammatory cytokine expression, and apoptosis. The flavonoid derivative, named B6, which was shown to be a modulator of Nur77 in previous screen, molecular dynamics simulation revealed that B6 binds strongly to Nur77 through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions. Treating CSE-stimulated 16-HBE cells with B6 resulted in a reduction of both inflammatory cytokine expression and secretion, as well as attenuated apoptosis. Furthermore, B6 treatment resulted in a decrease in Nur77 expression and translocation to the ER, which was accompanied by a concentration-dependent reduction in the expression of ER stress markers. Meanwhile, B6 played a similar role in CSE-treated BEAS-2B cells. These combined effects suggest that B6 could inhibit inflammation and apoptosis in airway epithelial cells after cigarette smoke stimulation, and support its further development as a candidate intervention for treating COPD-related airway inflammation

    Posterior urethral hamartoma with hypospadias in a child: a case report and literature review

    BackgroundHamartoma is a mass formed by the proliferation and disorder of two or more kinds of cells inherent in normal organs or anatomical parts, which can occur in any part of the body. The most common hamartoma are kidney hamartoma, spleen hamartoma, liver hamartoma, and lung hamartoma. Urethral hamartoma is extremely rare in clinical practice.Case reportCombined with literature review, the diagnosis and treatment process of a child with posterior urethral hamartoma and hypospadias in our hospital were analyzed. The patient was cured after surgical treatment, the lesion was completely removed, the appearance was satisfactory, and there was no recurrence, urethral stricture, urethral fistula, and other complications. The pathological results of this case support the histological diagnosis of hamartoma, which provides reference for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of congenital malformation and tumor of urogenital in children.ConclusionWhen a child has posterior urethral hamartoma, the symptoms may not be very typical, and it is often combined with urethral malformation. Therefore, it is necessary to perform careful physical examination combined with pathological examination to be able to make an accurate diagnosis. Under normal circumstances, the prognosis of urethral hamartoma is good. However, more cases are needed to be observed for verification, and a long-term effective follow-up after surgery is needed
