Coupled Bose-Einstein condensate: Collapse for attractive interaction
We study the collapse in a coupled Bose-Einstein condensate of two types of
bosons 1 and 2 under the action of a trap using the time-dependent
Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The system may undergo collapse when one, two or
three of the scattering lengths for scattering of boson with ,
, are negative representing an attractive interaction. Depending
on the parameters of the problem a single or both components of the condensate
may experience collapse.Comment: 5 pages and 9 figures, small changes mad
The association of types of training and practice settings with doctors’ empathy and patient enablement among patients with chronic illness in Hong Kong
Background: The increase in non-communicable disease (NCD) is becoming a global health problem and there is an increasing need for primary care doctors to look after these patients although whether family doctors are adequately trained and prepared is unknown.
Objective: This study aimed to determine if doctors with family medicine (FM) training are associated with enhanced empathy in consultation and enablement for patients with chronic illness as compared to doctors with internal medicine training or without any postgraduate training in different clinic settings.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional questionnaire survey using the validated Chinese version of the Consultation and Relational Empathy (CARE) Measure as well as Patient Enablement Instrument (PEI) for evaluation of quality and outcome of care. 14 doctors from hospital specialist clinics (7 with family medicine training, and 7 with internal medicine training) and 13 doctors from primary care clinics (7 with family medicine training, and 6 without specialist training) were recruited. In total, they consulted 823 patients with chronic illness. The CARE Measure and PEI scores were compared amongst doctors in these clinics with different training background: family medicine training, internal medicine training and those without specialist training. Generalized estimation equation (GEE) was used to account for cluster effects of patients nested with doctors.
Results Within similar clinic settings, FM trained doctors had higher CARE score than doctors with no FM training. In hospital clinics, the difference of the mean CARE score for doctors who had family medicine training (39.2, SD = 7.04) and internal medicine training (35.5, SD = 8.92) was statistically significant after adjusting for consultation time and gender of the patient. In the community care clinics, the mean CARE score for doctors with family medicine training and those without specialist training were 32.1 (SD = 7.95) and 29.2 (SD = 7.43) respectively, but the difference was not found to be significant. For PEI, patients receiving care from doctors in the hospital clinics scored significantly higher than those in the community clinics, but there was no significant difference in PEI between patients receiving care from doctors with different training backgrounds within similar clinic setting.
Conclusion: Family medicine training was associated with higher patient perceived empathy for chronic illness patients in the hospital clinics. Patient enablement appeared to be associated with clinic settings but not doctors’ training background. Training in family medicine and a clinic environment that enables more patient doctor time might help in enhancing doctors’ empathy and enablement for chronic illness patients

Absorption cross section in warped AdS_3 black hole revisited
We investigate the absorption cross section for minimal-coupled scalars in
the warped AdS_3 black hole. According to our calculation, the cross section
reduces to the horizon area in the low energy limit as usually expected in
contrast to what was previously found. We also calculate the greybody factor
and find that the effective temperatures for the two chiral CFT's are
consistent with that derived from the quasinormal modes. Observing the
conjectured warped AdS/CFT correspondence, we suspect that a specific sector of
the CFT operators with the desired conformal dimension could be responsible for
the peculiar thermal behaviour of the warped AdS_3 black hole.Comment: 16+1 pages, typos corrected, references and footnotes adde
Elementary excitations in one-dimensional spin-orbital models: neutral and charged solitons and their bound states
We study, both numerically and variationally, the interplay between different
types of elementary excitations in the model of a spin chain with anisotropic
spin-orbit coupling, in the vicinity of the "dimer line" with an exactly known
dimerized ground state. Our variational treatment is found to be in a
qualitative agreement with the exact diagonalization results. Soliton pairs are
shown to be the lowest excitations only in a very narrow region of the phase
diagram near the dimer line, and the phase transitions are always governed by
magnon-type excitations which can be viewed as soliton-antisoliton bound
states. It is shown that when the anisotropy exceeds certain critical value, a
new phase boundary appears. In the doped model on the dimer line, the exact
elementary charge excitation is shown to be a hole bound to a soliton. Bound
states of those "charged solitons" are studied; exact solutions for N-hole
bound states are presented.Comment: 11 pages revtex, 6 figure
Collapse and revival of oscillations in a parametrically excited Bose-Einstein condensate in combined harmonic and optical lattice trap
In this work, we study parametric resonances in an elongated cigar-shaped BEC
in a combined harmonic trap and a time dependent optical lattice by using
numerical and analytical techniques. We show that there exists a relative
competition between the harmonic trap which tries to spatially localize the BEC
and the time varying optical lattice which tries to delocalize the BEC. This
competition gives rise to parametric resonances (collapse and revival of the
oscillations of the BEC width). Parametric resonances disappear when one of the
competing factors i.e strength of harmonic trap or the strength of optical
lattice dominates. Parametric instabilities (exponential growth of Bogoliubov
modes) arise for large variations in the strength of the optical lattice.Comment: 9 pages, 20 figure
An Apparatus to Control and Monitor the Para-D2 Concentration in a Solid Deuterium, Superthermal Source of Ultra-cold Neutrons
Controlling and measuring the concentration of para-D2 is an essential step
toward realizing solid deuterium as an intense ultra-cold neutron (UCN) source.
To this end, we implemented an experimental technique to convert para- to
ortho-deuterium molecules by flowing D2 gas through a cryogenic cell filled
with paramagnetic hydrous ferric oxide granules. This process efficiently
reduced the para-D2 concentration from 33.3% to 1.5%. Rotational Raman
spectroscopy was applied to measure the residual para-D2 contamination to
better than 2 parts in 10^3, and the hydrogen contamination to 1 part in 10^3.
We also contrast our optical technique to conventional thermal conductivity
measurements of the para-D2 concentration, reporting some of the relevant
strengths and weaknesses of our implementation of each technique.Comment: accepted for publication in NIM
The molecular systems composed of the charmed mesons in the doublet
We study the possible heavy molecular states composed of a pair of charm
mesons in the H and S doublets. Since the P-wave charm-strange mesons
and are extremely narrow, the future experimental
observation of the possible heavy molecular states composed of
and may be feasible if they really exist.
Especially the possible states may be searched for via the
initial state radiation technique.Comment: 42 pages, 4 tables, 31 figures. Improved numerical results and
