A Follow-Up of Weber State College\u27s Cash Register Training Graduates
As mass merchandising has become an important part of our American way of life and as competition has increased, marketers have recognized the need for a positive public image. Many retail store managers are now evaluating all inside selling activities to determine locations within the store that contribute to improved customer relations. The checkout station is considered one of the best areas for effective customer relations since the checker-cashier is of~en the only employee the customer contacts while shopping and since all customers must leave through the checkout area in many stores. Retail store managers recognize the need f or efficient, courteous checker-cashiers and seek persons who a re trained in merchandise checking and customer relations (d).
In 1968, the Supermarket Institute-National Cash Register Cashier-Checker Training program was initiated at Weber State College. At first , the program was offered as a night class during three of the four school quarters . In the past six years this course enrollment has grown enormously , from three classes per year to 8-12 classes per year. The facilities no \u27 permit enrollments of 30-40 students where only 20 students were permitted to participate in each training session.
In 1973 Weber State College decided to offer this course to high school students. Weber County District sent 40 students during the first quarter and Ogden City District sent 30 students. The students received release time from the school to go to the college from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. each day for six weeks of the quarter. At present, Weber State is setting up an articulated program where high school students will take the self-study package of learning and complete it at their high schools, and the balance of the time will be used in the specialized lab at Weber State, using the equipment in the lab (10).
In an interview with Dan Litchford, the acting department chairman, he stated, There have been studies to evaluate and improve the course since it was first started . Most of the studies were to identify the need for graduates who have completed the SMI- NCR course (10). This proposed study is the first to include evaluation of student performance on the job.
More specifically this study was designed to accomplish the following objectives :
1. To identify present employers of the graduates.
2. To obtain supervisor\u27s evaluations of graduates proficiency with respect to:
a. Operation of cash register
b. Handling of checks
c. Making correct change
d. Handling food stamps
e. Handling merchandise adjustments
f. Weighing produce on scales
g. Stocking
h. Baggin
Crystallization of the regulatory and effector domains of the key sporulation response regulator Spo0A
The key response-regulator gene of sporulation, spo0A, has been cloned from Bacillus stearothermophilus and the encoded protein purified. The DNA-binding and phospho-acceptor domains of Spo0A have been prepared by tryptic digestion of the intact protein and subsequently crystallized in forms suitable for X-ray crystallographic studies. The DNA-binding domain has been crystallized in two forms, one of which diffracts X-rays to beyond 2.5 Angstrom spacing. The crystals of the phospho-acceptor domain diffract X-rays beyond 2.0 Angstrom spacing using synchrotron radiation
Renormalization Group Analysis of \rho-Meson Properties at Finite Density
We calculate the density dependence of the -meson mass and coupling
constant() for -nucleon-nucleon vertex at one loop using the
lagrangian where the -meson is included as a dynamical gauge boson of a
hidden local symmetry. From the condition that thermodynamic potential should
not depend on the arbitrary energy scale, renormalization scale, one can
construct a renormalization group equation for the thermodynamic potential and
argue that the various renormalization group coefficients are functions of the
density or temperature. We calculate the -function for
-nucleon-nucleon coupling constant () and -function
for -meson mass (). We found that the -meson mass
and the coupling constant for drop as density increases in the

Lorentz gauge theory as a model of emergent gravity
We consider a class of Lorentz gauge gravity theories within Riemann-Cartan
geometry which admits a topological phase in the gravitational sector. The
dynamic content of such theories is determined only by the contortion part of
the Lorentz gauge connection. We demonstrate that there is a unique Lagrangian
that admits propagating spin one mode in correspondence with gauge theories of
other fundamental interactions. Remarkably, despite the R^2 type of the
Lagrangian and non-compact structure of the Lorentz gauge group, the model
possesses rather a positive-definite Hamiltonian. This has been proved in the
lowest order of perturbation theory. This implies further consistent
quantization and leads to renormalizable quantum theory. It is assumed that the
proposed model describes possible mechanism of emergent Einstein gravity at
very early stages of the Universe due to quantum dynamics of contortion.Comment: 11 pages, final version, minor correction
Can majority support save an endangered language? A case study of language attitudes in Guernsey
Many studies of minority language revitalisation focus on the attitudes and perceptions of minorities, but not on those of majority group members. This paper discusses the implications of these issues, and presents research into majority andf minority attitudes towards the endangered indigenous vernacular of Guernsey, Channel Islands. The research used a multi-method approach (questionnaire and interview) to obtain attitudinal data from a representative sample of the population that included politicians and civil servants (209 participants). The findings suggested a shift in language ideology away from the post-second world war ‘culture of modernisation’ and monolingual ideal, towards recognition of the value of a bi/trilingual linguistic heritage. Public opinion in Guernsey now seems to support the maintenance of the indigenous language variety, which has led to a degree of official support. The paper then discusses to what extent this ‘attitude shift’ is reflected in linguistic behaviour and in concrete language planning measures
Evolved orthogonal ribosome purification for in vitro characterization
We developed orthogonal ribosome−mRNA pairs in which the orthogonal ribosome (O-ribosome) specifically translates the orthogonal mRNA and the orthogonal mRNA is not a substrate for cellular ribosomes. O-ribosomes have been used to create new cellular circuits to control gene expression in new ways, they have been used to provide new information about the ribosome, and they form a crucial part of foundational technologies for genetic code expansion and encoded and evolvable polymer synthesis in cells. The production of O-ribosomes in the cell makes it challenging to study the properties of O-ribosomes in vitro, because no method exists to purify functional O-ribosomes from cellular ribosomes and other cellular components. Here we present a method for the affinity purification of O-ribosomes, via tagging of the orthogonal 16S ribosomal RNA. We demonstrate that the purified O-ribosomes are pure by primer extension assays, and structurally homogenous by gel electrophoresis and sucrose gradients. We demonstrate the utility of this purification method by providing a preliminary in vitro characterization of Ribo-X, an O-ribosome previously evolved for enhanced unnatural amino acid incorporation in response to amber codons. Our data suggest that the basis of Ribo-X’s in vivo activity is a decreased affinity for RF1
Meson Exchange Effect on Color Superconductivity
We investigate the effects of pion and gluon exchanges on the formation of
two-flavor color superconductivity at moderate density, . The
chiral quark model proposed by Manohar and Georgi containing pions as well as
gluons is employed to show that the pion exchange reduces substantially the
value of the superconducting gap gotten with the gluon exchange only. It turns
out that the pion exchanges produce a repulsion between quark-quark pair in a
spin and isospin singlet state.
We suggest that the phase consisiting of pions, gluons and quarks is one of
the candidates of in-medium QCD phase at moderate density.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure, minor correction
Precision Determination of the Neutron Spin Structure Function g1n
We report on a precision measurement of the neutron spin structure function
using deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by polarized
^3He. For the kinematic range 0.014<x<0.7 and 1 (GeV/c)^2< Q^2< 17 (GeV/c)^2,
we obtain at an average . We find relatively large negative
values for at low . The results call into question the usual Regge
theory method for extrapolating to x=0 to find the full neutron integral

Nuclear matter to strange matter transition in holographic QCD
We construct a simple holographic QCD model to study nuclear matter to
strange matter transition. The interaction of dense medium and hadrons is taken
care of by imposing the force balancing condition for stable D4/D6/D6
configuration. By considering the intermediate and light flavor branes
interacting with baryon vertex homogeneously distributed along R^3 space and
requesting the energy minimization, we find that there is a well defined
transition density as a function of current quark mass. We also find that as
density goes up very high, intermediate (or heavy) and light quarks populate
equally as expected from the Pauli principle. In this sense, the effect of the
Pauli principle is realized as dynamics of D-branes.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figure
