    Critical Behavior and Lack of Self Averaging in the Dynamics of the Random Potts Model in Two Dimensions

    We study the dynamics of the q-state random bond Potts ferromagnet on the square lattice at its critical point by Monte Carlo simulations with single spin-flip dynamics. We concentrate on q=3 and q=24 and find, in both cases, conventional, rather than activated, dynamics. We also look at the distribution of relaxation times among different samples, finding different results for the two q values. For q=3 the relative variance of the relaxation time tau at the critical point is finite. However, for q=24 this appears to diverge in the thermodynamic limit and it is ln(tau) which has a finite relative variance. We speculate that this difference occurs because the transition of the corresponding pure system is second order for q=3 but first order for q=24.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures, final published versio

    New algorithm and results for the three-dimensional random field Ising Model

    The random field Ising model with Gaussian disorder is studied using a new Monte Carlo algorithm. The algorithm combines the advantanges of the replica exchange method and the two-replica cluster method and is much more efficient than the Metropolis algorithm for some disorder realizations. Three-dimensional sytems of size 24324^3 are studied. Each realization of disorder is simulated at a value of temperature and uniform field that is adjusted to the phase transition region for that disorder realization. Energy and magnetization distributions show large variations from one realization of disorder to another. For some realizations of disorder there are three well separated peaks in the magnetization distribution and two well separated peaks in the energy distribution suggesting a first-order transition.Comment: 24 pages, 23 figure

    Surrender, catch and the imp of fieldwork

    We build on the work of Kurt Wolff to capture some distinctive aspects of ethnographic fieldwork. Drawing on the sociology of knowledge and phenomenology, Wolff introduced and developed the idea of surrender-and- catch in order to encapsulate the twin processes of engagement and reflection. We extend the idea to incorporate what we call the 'imps’ of ethnographic fieldwork. For neither surrender nor catch are themselves predictable or perfectly under the ethnographer’s control. While fieldwork is itself unpredictable, there may be many unanticipated ‘catches’. Moreover, there is often an ethnographic ‘imp’ that intrudes itself, questioning the very desirability or good sense of the fieldwork itself. The imps arise unbidden but can pose searching, sometimes unwelcome – though ultimately productive – questions.     This paper is concerned with re-imaginings of ‘Europe’ following the accession to the European Union (EU) of former ‘Eastern European’ countries. In particular it explores media representations of post-EU accession migration from Romania to the United Kingdom in the UK and Romanian newspaper press. Todorova’s (1997) notion of Balkanism is deployed as a theoretical construct to facilitate the analysis of these representations as first, the continuation of long-standing and deeply embedded imaginings of the ‘East’ of Europe and, second, as a means of contesting these discourses. The paper explores the way in which the UK press construct Balkanist discourses about Romania and Romanian migrants, and then analyses how the Romanian press has contested such discourses. The paper argues that the idea of the ‘East’ remains important in constructing notions of ‘Europe’ within popular media geographies

    Scaling and self-averaging in the three-dimensional random-field Ising model

    We investigate, by means of extensive Monte Carlo simulations, the magnetic critical behavior of the three-dimensional bimodal random-field Ising model at the strong disorder regime. We present results in favor of the two-exponent scaling scenario, ηˉ=2η\bar{\eta}=2\eta, where η\eta and ηˉ\bar{\eta} are the critical exponents describing the power-law decay of the connected and disconnected correlation functions and we illustrate, using various finite-size measures and properly defined noise to signal ratios, the strong violation of self-averaging of the model in the ordered phase.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Eur.     Chirality scenario of the spin-glass ordering

    Detailed account is given of the chirality scenario of experimental spin-glass transitions. In this scenario, the spin glass order of weakly anisotropic Heisenberg-like spin-glass magnets including canonical spin glasses are essentially chirality driven.
