    ELECTROKINETIC FOCUSING AND DISPENSING OF PARTICLES AND CELLS ON MICROFLUIDIC CHIPS

    ABSTRACT This work investigated the electrokinetic focusing and dispensing of polystyrene particles and red blood cells on microfluidic chips. Particles or cells were first electrokinetically focused using the merging of focusing streams on the sample stream, and subsequently separated as a result of the focusing. These particles or cells were then selectively dispensed from the focused sample stream using precise application of electrical pulses. The whole process of focusing, separation and dispensing of particles was visualized by a custom-made microscopy system. In particular, the width of the focused fluorescein stream and the accelerated electrophoretic motion of particles and cells were measured in a cross-channel and compared with a proposed analytical model. The electrokinetic manipulation of particles and cells demonstrated in this work can be used for developing integrated lab-on-a-chip devices for studies of cells

    Determinants of Bacterial Contamination in Pools, Spas, and Wading Pools: Should Chlorine Standards Be Revised?

    Using a retrospective case-control study, we compared poolside tests with bacteriological samples during three consecutive summers. A total of 844 matched samples were obtained. Increased chlorine levels were associated with lower rates of contamination. Alkalinity, pH, and TDS were not statistically associated with bacteriological failures. In swimming pools with \u3e 1 ppm of chlorine, 27/30 (90.0%) passed bacteriologic evaluation. In spas with \u3c 1.0 ppm of chlorine, only 12/28 (42.9%) passed. Of the spas with \u3e 3.0 ppm of chlorine, 170/176 (96.6%) passed. Of the wading pools with \u3c 1ppm of chlorine, only 12/25 (48.0%) passed. Of the wading pools with \u3e 2 ppm, 263/290 (90.7%) passed. Of available poolside tests, only chlorine levels are predictive of positive testing for fecal contamination. Higher levels of chlorine were associated with higher passing rates. Current standards for disinfection in spas and wading pools may need to be increased to help prevent contamination

    Application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Emergency Medical Situations

    Introduction One of the significant impacts on patient outcome in emergency medical situations is the response time taken for trained personnel and equipment arrival on scene. The National EMS Information System states the average response time to reach adult patients in the United States is 9.4 minutes (1). We are exploring the whether the application of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology in emergency situations would shorten response time and subsequently could improve patients’ outcome In this reported on first phase (Phase 1) of an envisioned multi-stage project, we tested the ability of a UAV to properly, efficiently transport a a portable ECG device to a mock emergency site and successfully take an ECG reading when used by an untrained personnel on hand. MethodsOur UAV was a DJI Phantom 2 Vision model, a quadcopter equipped with a 14 Megapixel camera and HD video recording capabilities. The onboard camera allows for real time transmission of patient status and appearance, while the quadcopter model allows for maximum weight to lift ratio. In order to record a portable ECG, we equipped an iPhone 5 with an AliveCor Kardia mobile ECG monitor. We included an easy to use protocol for the AliveCor so that a layperson would be able to operate the machine. DataThe total flight time for 100 yards across an open field was two and a half minutes , or approximately 2 feet/second. This data shows a chi-squared distribution of 5.065, with a p-value of .01 (df=1, p\u3c.05). DiscussionDue to the statistically significant p-value, Phase 1 data demonstrates that our UAV was capable of traversing an appropriate distance in an amount of time that drastically improves upon the emergency response call time taken by traditional methods. In addition to our flight data, we were also able to properly operate the ECG and apply it to a mock patient in under 90 seconds, showing that our protocol, with instructions for usage, was clear and precise. Conclusion: This study is considered Phase 1 of a multi-stage investigation. Moving forward, we hope to improve the efficacy of our UAV, while expanding its the technological and medical capabilities, allowing it to not only carry ECG but also possibly AEDs and pharmaceuticals. Ultimately, We hope to apply such technology to emergencies in both rural and urban environments, as well as adapt it for use within the military

    AbstractThe prion protein PrP has a key role in transmissible spongiform encephalopathies but its biological function remains largely unknown. Recently, a related protein, Shadoo, was discovered. Its biological properties and brain distribution partially overlap that of PrP. We report that the Shadoo-encoding gene knockdown in PrP-knockout mouse embryos results in a lethal phenotype, occurring between E8 and E11, not observed on the wild-type genetic background. It reveals that these two proteins play a shared, crucial role in mammalian embryogenesis, explaining the lack of severe phenotype in PrP-knockout mammals, an appreciable step towards deciphering the biological role of this protein family

    Characterization of Lake Kivu Water Chemistry and Its Environmental Impacts

    Among the world’s lakes, Lake Kivu, a rift lake in the western branch of the Eastern African Rift System, has significant reserves of dissolved chemicals. However, no research has been done on their vertical variation in lake and how they affect the environment. This proposed chapter will review earlier research to better understand the origin of Lake Kivu’s chemical composition and its effects on the aquatic environment. Water samples were collected using Niskin bottles at various depths, as well as in various locations away from Nyamyumba hot spring sources. Hach kits and procedures were used to conduct chemical analyses on water samples. This study found that the majority of chemical concentrations rise with depth, primarily as a result of the deposition of organic matter. The sewage water from residential buildings, hospitals, runoff from agricultural activities, and rock-water interaction through dissolution process are the possible sources of chemicals discovered in Lake Kivu water. The levels of chemicals in the water of Lake Kivu at this time are less polluting and damaging to the aquatic environment. Therefore, it is important to implement a continuous monitoring strategy to stop eutrophication and other diseases linked to water pollution in humans

    Super-recognizers: From the lab to the world and back again

    The recent discovery of individuals with superior face processing ability has sparked considerable interest amongst cognitive scientists and practitioners alike. These ‘Super‐recognizers’ (SRs) offer clues to the underlying processes responsible for high levels of face processing ability. It has been claimed that they can help make societies safer and fairer by improving accuracy of facial identity processing in real‐world tasks, for example when identifying suspects from Closed Circuit Television or performing security‐critical identity verification tasks. Here, we argue that the current understanding of superior face processing does not justify widespread interest in SR deployment: There are relatively few studies of SRs and no evidence that high accuracy on laboratory‐based tests translates directly to operational deployment. Using simulated data, we show that modest accuracy benefits can be expected from deploying SRs on the basis of ideally calibrated laboratory tests. Attaining more substantial benefits will require greater levels of communication and collaboration between psychologists and practitioners. We propose that translational and reverse‐translational approaches to knowledge development are critical to advance current understanding and to enable optimal deployment of SRs in society. Finally, we outline knowledge gaps that this approach can help address

    Neonatal Erythema Multiforme: A Case Report

    Erythema multiforme (EM) is an extremely rare condition in infancy. To the best of our knowledge, there have been only three cases of neonatal EM described in the literature, and no such cases have been reported in Korea. A preterm neonate born at 35 weeks and six days of gestation presented with multiple annular erythematous patches with a targetoid shape over his entire body at 36 days of age (corrected age of 7 days). He had no systemic symptoms except for transient mild fever. No triggering factor except for hepatitis B and BCG vaccination was found. Neutropenia was noted upon laboratory analysis. Skin biopsy specimens showed findings suggestive of erythema multiforme. The skin lesions improved rapidly upon administration of intravenous methylprednisolone; however, neutropenia continued for a much longer period. The significance of neutropenia with respect to the development of EM was not clarified. There has been no recurrence of skin lesions over a one-year follow-up period
