Appendiceal Endometriosis Presenting As Chronic Appendicitis: A Case Report.

The origin of endometriosis has multiple theories, with controversy over which may demonstrate the prominent pathophysiology. The most common extra-pelvic organ system affected by endometriosis is the gastrointestinal tract. Gastrointestinal endometriosis (GE) accounts for 3 to 37% of all endometriosis cases, and appendiceal endometriosis is present in around 3% of GE cases, therefore constituting less than 1% of all endometriosis cases. In this report, we present a 24-year-old female with a past medical history significant for endometriosis status post two excisional laparoscopies who presented with eight months\u27 duration of right lower quadrant pain, constant and stabbing, with rebound tenderness. Appendectomy and histopathology demonstrated focal endometriosis, diffuse serosal fibrovascular adhesions involving the appendiceal serosa/subserosa, as well as a dilated lumen filled with hemorrhagic content. When the appendix is not considered in endometriosis pathology, patients are at increased risk for unresolved pain and further laparoscopic procedures. Prophylactic appendectomy appears to be a worthwhile consideration in patients with chronic pelvic pain, given the high frequency of appendiceal pathology

O Atol das Rocas, Brasil: análise preliminar da fauna de crustáceos e poliquetas

Among the oceanic islands in the Brazilian coast, Rocas Atoll is special since it is the only atoll in the Southern Atlantic and is the first Marine Biological Reserve of the Brazilian Coast. The atoll elliptical ring (3.7 to 2.5km) has a shallow central lagoon surrounded by a large reef plateau flat composed mainly of coralline algae. Despite its ecological importance the crustacean and polychaete fauna of Rocas Atoll is still poorly known with only 34 and 17 species, respectively, recorded. For this reason, an integrate effort with the aim of assessing the marine biodiversity of this Atoll was developed, through samples of reef and sedimentary environments. Results of this effort are here presented.Entre as ilhas oceânicas da costa brasileira, o Atol das Rocas se destaca por ser o único atol do Atlântico Sul e a primeira Reserva Biológica Marinha da costa brasileira. O anel elíptico do atol (3,7 a 2,5km) apresenta uma laguna central circundada por um grande platô recifal composto principalmente de algas calcárias. Apesar de sua importância ecológica, a fauna de crustáceos e poliquetas do Atol das Rocas ainda é pouco conhecida, com apenas 34 e 17 espécies, respectivamente, registradas. Por essa razão, foi realizado um esforço integrado com o objetivo de avaliar a biodiversidade marinha deste Atol através de coletas em ambientes recifais e sedimentares. Analysis of glass fiber reinforced cement (GRC) fracture surfaces

Glass fiber reinforced cement (GRC) is a composite material produced by the union of a cement mortar matrix and chopped glass fibers. Its good mechanical properties deteriorate with time. This phenomenon has been studied performing a tensile test program on both young and aged samples of GRC produced by using different chemical additives. Once the tests were carried out, a microstructural analysis of fracture surfaces was performed using a scanning electronic microscope (SEM). Pictures taken showed that the addition of metakaolin enables more fibers to be pulled out from the matrix instead of being broken in aged GRC samples. However, the increase in the number of such fibers pulled out did not prevent the embrittlement of GRC. Also, all the other chemical additions used did not show any improvement in the mechanical properties of GRC

Mangrove and saltmarsh distribution mapping and land cover change assessment for south-eastern Australia from 1991 to 2015

Coastal wetland ecosystems, such as saltmarsh and mangroves, provide a wide range of important ecological and socio-economic services. A good understanding of the spatial and temporal distribution of these ecosystems is critical to maximising the benefits from restoration and conservation projects. We mapped mangrove and saltmarsh ecosystem transitions from 1991 to 2015 in south-eastern Australia, using remotely sensed Landsat data and a Random Forest classification. Our classification results were improved by the addition of two physical variables (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM), and Distance to Water). We also provide evidence that the addition of post-classification, spatial and temporal, filters improve overall accuracy of coastal wetlands detection by up to 16%. Mangrove and saltmarsh maps produced in this study had an overall User Accuracy of 0.82–0.95 and 0.81–0.87 and an overall Producer Accuracy of 0.71–0.88 and 0.24–0.87 for mangrove and saltmarsh, respectively. We found that mangrove ecosystems in south-eastern Australia have lost an area of 1148 ha (7.6%), whilst saltmarsh experienced an overall increase in coverage of 4157 ha (20.3%) over this 24-year period. The maps developed in this study allow local managers to quantify persistence, gains, and losses of coastal wetlands in south-eastern Australia

Melhoria da Atenção à Saúde da Criança de Zero a 72 Meses na UBS Cândido Godói, Cândido Godói/RS

A mortalidade infantil é uns dos aspectos a serem levados em conta no desenvolvimento de um país, e por isso a importância da saúde da criança e o acompanhamento do seu desenvolvimento, principalmente no primeiro ano de vida para evitar qualquer desvio da saúde nesse período.O objetivo do trabalho foi melhorar a atenção à saúde da criança entre zero e 72 meses de idade na UBS Cândido Godói-RS. A intervenção foi realizada no período de 12 semanas. Antes do início da intervenção não existia um seguimento planejado e integral na atenção das crianças, assim como também não existiam informações exatas dos dados das crianças. Para o desenvolvimento da intervenção, nos baseamos no protocolo do Ministério da Saúde “Crescimento e desenvolvimento” do ano de 2012, ficha-espelho e planilha de coleta de dados fornecida pelo curso. O município conta com uma população de 6.600 habitantes que é atendida por duas equipes de saúde da família. A população de crianças da UBS é de 330 crianças, sendo que minha equipe tem uma população de 3.300 habitantes, e a população alvo é de 165 crianças.Dentro das dificuldades que temos, destaca-se o fato da equipe não ter as populações divididas, na realidade funcionada como uma só equipe.Durante a realização do trabalho, foi avaliada a qualidade do atendimento às crianças, estado nutricional, saúde bucal, presença ou não de doença crônica, os fatores de risco e também foi feito o preenchimento da ficha-espelho. Ao final das 12 semanas de intervenção, alcançamos uma cobertura da atenção à saúde de 49,1% das crianças. Além disso, conseguimos melhorar a proporção de crianças com a primeira consulta na primeira semana de vida (88,9%), com monitoramento do crescimento (88,9%), com monitoramento do desenvolvimento (85,2%), com triagem auditiva e teste do pezinho (97,5%).A equipe de trabalho se envolveu bastante. Além disso, temos um pediatra na UBS, prestando atendimento uma vez por semana, aspecto que viabilizou a realização da intervenção.Com esse trabalho os serviços para a população de crianças na faixa etária de zero até 72 meses tiveram um grande avanço, através da organização e distribuição das atividades e um planejamento bem feito. O fluxo na unidade melhorou com o agendamento das consultas e a qualidade nos atendimentos teve uma melhoria significativa. No transcurso das atividades realizadas com as crianças, muitas pessoas da comunidade, pais e responsáveis, expressaram sua gratidão pelo trabalho executado. Generating Stable Bioluminescent Cell Lines by Retroviral Transduction

This project focuses on improving tumor in vivo imaging techniques. It is difficult to accurately in vivo image orthotopic tumors using CT scans alone. Muriglo provides the capability to visualize in vivo bioluminescent signals emanating from intact tissues. We can coregister CT scans captured with the SARRP with luciferase signals captured with the Muriglo and locate tumor isocenters for image-guided radiation. We may then direct radiation to neoplastic tissue while also sparing the maximum amount of healthy tissue. To do this we must genetically engineer cells to express luciferase. We propose a protocol to use a retrovirus to create stable cell lines that express firefly luciferase for bioluminescence. We will also determine the optimal dosage of the G418 antibiotic for selection

The Sun's position in the sky

We express the position of the Sun in the sky as a function of time and the observer's geographic coordinates. Our method is based on applying rotation matrices to vectors describing points on the celestial sphere. We also derive direct expressions, as functions of date of the year and geographic latitude, for the duration of daylight, the maximum and minimum altitudes of the Sun, and the cardinal directions to sunrise and sunset. We discuss how to account for the eccentricity of the earth's orbit, the precessions of the equinoxes and the perihelion, the size of the solar disk, and atmospheric refraction. We illustrate these results by computing the dates of "Manhattanhenge" (when sunset aligns with the east-west streets on the main traffic grid for Manhattan, in New York City), by plotting the altitude of the Sun over representative cities as a function of time, and by showing plots ("analemmas") for the position of the Sun in the sky at a given hour of the day.Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures. v3: Replaced to match published version and to re-package Mathematica notebook as an ancillary fil

Optical bistability with a repulsive optical force in coupled silicon photonic crystal membranes

We demonstrate actuation of a silicon photonic crystal membrane with a repulsive optical gradient force. The extent of the static actuation is extracted by examining the optical bistability as a combination of the optomechanical, thermo-optic, and photo-thermo-mechanical effects using coupled-mode theory. Device behavior is dominated by a repulsive optical force which results in displacements of ≈ 1 nm/mW. By employing an extended guided resonance which effectively eliminates multi-photon thermal and electronic nonlinearities, our silicon-based device provides a simple, non-intrusive solution to extending the actuation range of micro-electromechanical devices.United States.
