Cross-field Current Instability for Substorm Expansions

The funding provided by the above-referenced NASA grant has enabled us: (1) to investigate the quasi-linear evolution of the IWI [Lui et al., 1993] and that of the generalized MTSI/IWI [Yoon and Lui, 1993], (2) to carry out the linear analysis of the LHDI to elucidate the difference between it and the MTSI/PM instability [Yoon et al., 1994], (3) to conduct some preliminary nonlocal analyses of the MTSI [Lui et al., 1995] and the IWI [Yoon and Lui, 1996] modes, (4) to study low-frequency shear-driven instability and its nonlinear evolution, which might compete with the CCI [Yoon et al., 1996], and (5) to study the evolution of current sheet during late substorm growth phase by means of 2-D Hall-MHD simulation in order to obtain a better understanding of the current sheet equilibrium crucial for CCI theory [Yoon and Lui, 1997]

Metatheory and Friendly Competition in Theory Growth: The Case of Power Processes in Bargaining

[Excerpt] This paper analyzes the theoretical development taking place in a program of research on power processes in bargaining (see Bacharach and Lawler 1976, 1980, 1981a, 1981b; Lawler and Bacharach 1976, 1979, 1987; Lawler, Ford, and Blegen 1988; Lawler and Yoon 1990; Lawler 1986, 1992). The theoretical program takes as its starting point a situation where individuals, groups, organizations, or even societies with conflicting interests voluntarily enter into explicit bargaining. Explicit (as opposed to tacit) bargaining assumes the mutual acknowledgment of negotiations, conflicting issues along which compromise is possible, and open lines of communication through which parties can exchange offers and counteroffers in an attempt to resolve the issues that divide them (Schelling 1960; Bacharach and Lawler 1980; Boyle and Lawler 1991). The scope of this theoretical research program assumes further that the parties have a power capability, that they use this power tactically in an effort to achieve desired outcomes, and that they strive for a favorable position during the bargaining process

The topic of cultural differences in picture books can be used as a medium for school-age children to understand more about the condition of immigrant children in America. “Through picture books about immigrants, nonimmigrant children can learn about the immigrant experience (Johnson and Smith, 1993) and be exposed to different cultures in the social studies classroom” (Lamme, Linda, et al., 2004: 123). This issue becomes very interesting to be analyzed because the readers will get more understanding on how immigrant children face several cultural differences in America, especially on how they develop their identity. The purpose of this study is to analyze the identity development of immigrant children in America as portrayed in Yoon character in the picture books by Helen Recorvits. As a Korean girl who moves to America, Yoon has to adapt and adjust with new different environment. The method of this study is descriptive qualitative based on the library research. This paper uses sociological approach to analyze the story of Yoon in the picture books. The result of this study shows that Yoon has experienced adjustment and acculturation during her adaptation to American culture. She has gradually undergone a change of identity, which is from a Korean girl to be an Asian-American. Keywords: picture books, immigrant children, adjustment, identity development
