First Year ESL Students Developing Critical Thinking: Challenging the Stereotypes

    Get PDF
Reporting a case study of two high-achieving Chinese students studying at a university in Hong Kong, this paper presents evidence that poses an anti-thesis to the stereotypes of first year university students as holding naïve beliefs about learning and of ‘Chinese learners’ as lacking in critical thinking. Many studies have examined Chinese students’ learning experiences within local educational contexts, yet we know very little what beliefs individual Chinese ESL students hold about learning and writing in an English-dominant university especially in their early stage of studying at such an institution, and how their beliefs are reflected in what they actually do in their writing. This paper aims to illuminate a connection between two high-achieving Chinese students’ beliefs about learning/writing in the university and what they did in a written assignment in an introductory course of political science, especially in terms of their use of authorship strategies as they wrote from sources. The data were collected through interviews and gathering the students’ notes, process logs, papers, source texts, as well as the relevant materials of the political science course. The study revealed that for both students the essence of university learning and writing consisted in independent and critical thinking, and writing with a clear view and sound logic; and they both imprinted authorship into their papers, by proposing revised theories on their selected topics and fitting sources into their own organizational frameworks

A Study on the Application of Elements of Ethnic Dress in Modern Fashion Design

The paper mainly analyzes the importance of ethnic dress from the perspective of the application of ethnic costume’s form and various features in modern fashion design to fully acknowledge that national costumes are the inexhaustible source of inspiration for designing creation. Only by understanding, inheriting and enhancing the essence of ethnic costume, we can transfer it into the culture of modern fashion design, and gain enlightenment to integrate the culture of traditional ethnic dress with that of modern fashion. Key words: National dress style; Fashion; Creation; Design patterns; Color relations; Structural characteristics; Local modelin

Study of Reliability of Substation for Coal Mine Supervision System

    Get PDF
AbstractThe sub-station has direct impact on the reliability of coal mine safety monitoring system reliability. The mine sub-station reliability of expected value and accelerated life test of the reliability value is given by setting the number of tests Censored Bayesian methods and Fixed Number Truncated of constant-stress accelerated methods on sub-station reliability research, and a sub-station with the voltage changes in the average life expectancy curves is simulationed. Through research we can see that the two methods to verify the reliability of the results of similar, and thus proved the scientific nature of the two methods

Analysis of Barriers and Strategies for China's Green Power Market

    Get PDF
AbstractWith the concern about the issues of global environments and climates, the green power development is drawing increasing attention. Although the government of our country attaches great importance to renewable energy power generation industry and certain industry foundation has been established, the generating costs of green power obviously lack competitive advantages comparing with those of the tradition power. As a result, the developing speed is relatively slow. This paper analyzes the existing barriers in the green power development of our country and puts up the suggestions of developing strategies for the future green power of our country, combined with the actual situations of our power industry

Systemic similarity analysis of compatibility drug-induced multiple pathway patterns _in vivo_

A major challenge in post-genomic research is to understand how physiological and pathological phenotypes arise from the networks of expressed genes and to develop powerful tools for translating the information exchanged between gene and the organ system networks. Although different expression modules may contribute independently to different phenotypes, it is difficult to interpret microarray experimental results at the level of single gene associations. The global effects and response pathways of small molecules in cells have been investigated, but the quantitative details of the activation mechanisms of multiple pathways _in vivo_ are not well understood. Similar response networks indicate similar modes of action, and gene networks may appear to be similar despite differences in the behaviour of individual gene groups. Here we establish the method for assessing global effect spectra of the complex signaling forms using Global Similarity Index (GSI) in cosines vector included angle. Our approach provides quantitative multidimensional measures of genes expression profile based on drug-dependent phenotypic alteration _in vivo_. These results make a starting point for identifying relationships between GSI at the molecular level and a step toward phenotypic outcomes at a system level to predict action of unknown compounds and any combination therapy

Aprendizaje de la lengua portuguesa y acceso al capital: un estudio sobre estudiantes universitarios de Macao

This paper reports on an inquiry into a group of students’ Portuguese language learning with a focus on their access to economic, social, and cultural capital. The inquiry problematizes the traditional uncritical assumption of a shared pursuit of linguistic competence among students. Drawing on individual in-depth interviews with 14 participants at a university in Macau, this article illustrates how local and mainland Chinese students related their Portuguese language learning to the acquisition of different forms of capital, respectively. Specifically, our analysis reveals that economic capital dominated in the local participants’ pursuits, with cultural and social capital being less influential, whereas among mainland Chinese participants the influence of economic capital was weak and unsustainable, with a balanced distribution of cultural and social capital. The findings also suggest that the participants’ family contexts and social networks shaped their pursuits of different forms of capital in Portuguese learning, implying that educational institutions and teachers need to reframe their learning resources and pedagogical strategies for Portuguese language learners in Macau, placing greater emphasis on reinforcing students’ social connections with Portuguese or local Macanese communities.

Regularity and analyticity of solutions in a direction for elliptic equations

    Get PDF
In this paper, we study the regularity and analyticity of solutions to linear elliptic equations with measurable or continuous coefficients. We prove that if the coefficients and inhomogeneous term are Hölder-continuous in a direction, then the second-order derivative in this direction of the solution is Hölder-continuous, with a different Hölder exponent. We also prove that if the coefficients and the inhomogeneous term are analytic in a direction, then the solution is analytic in that direction
