This pitching research letter (PRL) describes the application of the pitching research template introduced by Faff (2015, 2021) to a reverse-engineering process in the practice of electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) as a form of defensive medicine with regard to the field of medical technology. The pitch structure underlines a succinct and streamlined approach to recapitulate key components of scientific studies that form the basis upon which a researcher’s scientific or seminal research work is assembled

Use of Acellular Dermal Matrix to Prevent Recurrence of Radioulnar Heterotopic Ossification.

    Get PDF
Radioulnar heterotopic ossification is a rare occurrence found in approximately 2% of all forearm injuries. Treatment is complicated by relatively high recurrence rates. Strategies to decrease recurrence have included the range of motion exercises and the interposition of inert or autogenous barriers. We report on the interposition of human acellular dermal matrix (ADM) for the treatment of distal radioulnar synostosis. We report a novel technique for the treatment of distal radioulnar heterotopic ossification. After resection, ADM in a cigar-shaped construct is interposed between the radius and ulna. Patients are followed clinically and radiographically. Two female patients were treated. Both patients had significant improvement in the range of motion in supination and pronation of the affected wrist postoperatively with an average follow-up of 36 months. There were no postoperative complications. Neither patient had recurrent disease. We describe the successful treatment of 2 patients with distal radioulnar heterotopic ossification with the use of human ADM. The ADM provides a barrier between the radius and ulna to prevent the recurrent formation of heterotopic ossification. ADM usage results in no donor site morbidity and is theoretically more resistant to infection when compared with nonbiologic barriers such as silicone and Integra. This technique is a simple, safe, and effective way to treat and prevent the recurrence of radioulnar heterotopic ossification

Low-Rank Tensor Completion via Novel Sparsity-Inducing Regularizers

To alleviate the bias generated by the l1-norm in the low-rank tensor completion problem, nonconvex surrogates/regularizers have been suggested to replace the tensor nuclear norm, although both can achieve sparsity. However, the thresholding functions of these nonconvex regularizers may not have closed-form expressions and thus iterations are needed, which increases the computational loads. To solve this issue, we devise a framework to generate sparsity-inducing regularizers with closed-form thresholding functions. These regularizers are applied to low-tubal-rank tensor completion, and efficient algorithms based on the alternating direction method of multipliers are developed. Furthermore, convergence of our methods is analyzed and it is proved that the generated sequences are bounded and any limit point is a stationary point. Experimental results using synthetic and real-world datasets show that the proposed algorithms outperform the state-of-the-art methods in terms of restoration performance

A reverse-engineered pitch on the scorching truth: Investigating the impact of heatwaves on Selangor’s elderly hospitalizations

The pitch template introduced by Faff (2015; 2021) has become increasingly popular in academic research. Therefore, this paper aims to offer readers new ideas about a more time-efficient and easy-to-understand way of exploring a new research area and topic through a reverse engineering approach. The author believes that a reverse engineering pitch is the cornerstone to assist new researchers or PhD students to sharpen their pitching skills before they start to prepare an original pitch for a new research topic

Orchids of Perlis: new records and distribution

    Get PDF
An intensive study on orchid diversity was conducted in Perlis especially within the Perlis State Park during the period 2003 - 2004. During the numerous field trips and studies, a total of 1,783 orchid specimens where collected from the 12 hills (11 limestone hills and one partly granite stone mountain). These samples were identified and differentiated into 119 taxa in 50 genera which are represented by 4 subfamilies. Ninety were identified to species level and the remaining 29 were only identified to genus level as the specimens were incomplete, because of lack of flowers. From these numbers, 62 species in 20 genera are new records for Perlis and 9 species and one genus, Panisea, are new records for Malaysia. The diversity of orchids in Perlis is characteristically closely related to Thailand’s orchid flora, which is Indo- Malayan Floristic Region or Thailand - Burmese Floristic Region as compared to the other parts of Malaya which is Malayan Floristic Region. This can be to the climatic conditions (northern dry - monsoon), geographical location (bordering Peninsular Thailand) and the limestone habitat which is known to haboura high rate of species endemism. As much as 90% of these new records of orchids were collected from near the Malaysian-Thailand border and from Gunung Perlis, the highest peak in Perlis (733m)

Temperature measurement and control system for transtibial prostheses: functional evaluation.

    Get PDF
The accumulation of heat inside the prosthetic socket increases skin temperature and fosters perspiration, which consequently leads to high tissue stress, friction blister, discomfort, unpleasant odor, and decreased prosthesis suspension and use. In the present study, the prototype of a temperature measurement and control (TM&C) system was designed, fabricated, and functionally evaluated in a phantom model of the transtibial prosthetic socket. The TM&C system was comprised of 12 thermistors divided equally into two groups that arranged internal and external to a prosthetic silicone liner. Its control system was programmed to select the required heating or cooling function of a thermal pump to provide thermal equilibrium based on the amount of temperature difference from a defined set temperature, or the amount of difference between the mean temperature recorded by inside and outside thermistors. A thin layer of aluminum was used for thermal conduction between the thermal pump and different sites around the silicone liner. The results showed functionality of the TM&C system for thermoregulation inside the prosthetic socket. However, enhancing the structure of this TM&C system, increasing its thermal power, and decreasing its weight and cost are main priorities before further development. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University supported all expenses of functional evaluation. Moreover, The ST&G Corporation, South Korea, has donated silicone liners for functional evaluation. The authors received no more support for conduction of this stud

The first biological portrait of stalk-eyed fruit flies: Life history, reproductive biology and host use patterns in pelmatops spp. (Diptera: Tephritidae)

    Get PDF
The stalk-eyed fruit flies, with their eyes borne at the ends of long stalks, are distinctly different from all other members of the family Tephritidae (Diptera). They resemble stalk-eyed flies (Diptera, Diopsidae) but they are much larger and their antennae are located in the middle of the head instead of on the eye stalks. The stalk-eyed fruit flies are represented by two genera (Pelmatops Enderlein and Pseudopelmatops Shiraki) mainly found in the Oriental tropics and subtropics, but their basic biology remains poorly documented. Here, we describe the life history, reproductive biology, and host use patterns of Pelmatops spp. (mainly P. ichneumoneus (Westwood)). These flies used two local brambles, Rubus setchuenensis and R. multibracteatus (Rosales, Rosaceae), as hosts, with females laying eggs below the epidermal tissue. The larvae bore into the stem, where they feed, eventually dropping to the ground to pupate in the soil. We describe the pupal morphology and eclosion, including the elongation of their eye stalks, feeding, mating, and agonistic behavior in adults. We observed mating between female P. ichneumoneus and male P. tangliangi and tentatively suggest that the two species could be conspecific. Our work presents the first detailed report on the biology of stalk-eyed fruit flies and it lays a significant foundation for future studies on the ecology and evolution of this group
