    Juvenile granulosa cell tumors (JGCTs) are rare ovarian tumors with overall good prognoses. They differ from adult granulosa cell tumors (AGCTs), which are well known for late recurrence. Most JGCTs (~97%) occur in individuals G missense point mutation of FOXL2 gene (characteristic of AGCT but absent in JGCT) allowed differentiation from AGCT.     MRS Study of ACC in Asperger's Syndrome

    Purpose Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) is a noninvasive neuroimaging method to quantify biochemical metabolites in vivo and it can serve as a powerful tool to monitor neurobiochemical profiles in the brain. Asperger's syndrome (AS) is a type of autism spectrum disorder, which is characterized by impaired social skills and restrictive, repetitive patterns of interest and activities, while intellectual levels and language skills are relatively preserved. Despite clinical aspects have been well-characterized, neurometabolic profiling in the brain of AS remains to be clear. The present study used proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS) to investigate whether pediatric AS is associated with measurable neurometabolic abnormalities that can contribute new information on the neurobiological underpinnings of the disorder. Methods Study participants consisted of 34 children with AS (2-12 years old; mean age 5.2 (±2.0); 28 boys) and 19 typically developed children (2-11 years old; mean age 5.6 (±2.6); 12 boys) who served as the normal control group. The 1H MRS data were obtained from two regions of interest: the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and left cerebellum. Results In the ACC, levels of N-acetylaspartate (NAA), total creatine (tCr), total choline-containing compounds (tCho) and myo-Inositol (mI) were significantly decreased in children with AS compared to controls. On the other hand, no significant group differences in any of the metabolites were found in the left cerebellum. Neither age nor sex accounted for the metabolic findings in the regions. Conclusion The finding of decreased levels of NAA, tCr, tCho, and mI in the ACC but not in left cerebellar voxels in the AS, suggests a lower ACC neuronal density in the present AS cohort compared to controls

    A Planar Gas Sensor Combined with Interdigitated Array Electrodes

    Generally, the gap and width of the electrodes should be small in order to generate a large number of redox cycles. However, it was difficult to fabricate fine patterns on the gas-permeable membrane, because the membrane was flexible and its surface was not flat. On the other hand, it is already possible to fabricate fine IDA patterns on a hard and flat substrate and are already being marketed. However, if these electrodes fabricated on substrate are set in an electrolyte solution, they do not come into contact with the membrane. Therefore, it is said that the sensitivity and response speed are poor. Accordingly, we experimented with a new method of applying IDA electrodes to a gas-sens ing system. We call it a planar IDA gas sensor. A piece of filter paper containing an electrolyte solution was put on IDA electrodes, which were fabricated on a glass substrate. This gas sensor was very easy to construct. A similar planar sensor had been reported for amperometric sensing of oxygen.9 It was developed as a low-cost and disposable sensor, and applied to glucose sensing. A planar sensor is expected to be more useful in complicated detection systems i.e. using IDA electrodes, which was confirmed after being used in a hydrogen-detection system

    The purpose of this study was to clarify the evaluation tendency of experienced caregivers on the appropriateness of manner of speaking by current caregivers and students, who were interacting with 3 -year-old children with "desirable attitude" and "attitude needs consideration". We analyzed evaluations by a former public kindergarten director who had worked for 36 years and a child care provider who had worked at a private kindergarten for 15 years and had no experience in a supervisory position. In both evaluations, a similar trend was found for the "attitude needs consideration". However, there was a discrepancy between the two in terms of the “desirable attitude”. This result suggests that reflection, evaluation criteria, interpretation, and meaning making based on childcare experience are more important in capturing "manner of speaking" for "attitude needs consideration”.departmental bulletin pape

    The incoming ‘New Labour’ government in Britain in 1997 promoted educational attainment as its top policy priority. But by 2003 this priority had a wider focus on improving outcomes for all children – in terms of their health, safety and general well-being, as well as education and training for work. The lecture will describe the wide programme of policy initiatives introduced by the Labour government to improve children’s lives, and the changes made by the Coalition Government from May 2010. It will examine how these have impacted on local authorities, schools and other services for children. The session will also encourage students to relate the above to social policy in Japan.
