Remedial Stability Analysis of Unstable Eastern Approach Embankment, Bluegrass Parkway Bridges over Chaplin River

In a meeting held on March 7, 1973, the Division of Research was requested to perform a supplementary slope stability analysis of the unstable, eastern approach embankment and foundation located at the crossing of the Bluegrass Parkway over Chaplin River and extending between Stations 2317+14 and 2321+00. Previously (see referenced report), two remedial schemes had been considered for increasing the stability of the unstable soil mass to an acceptable level. Those included: 1) loading the toe area of the existing, eastern approach slope with a berm, including a sloping berm, and 2) unloading the upper portion of the eastern slope by excavation, that is, decreasing the original approach slope (1.5 horizontal to 1 vertical), which would require an extension of the bridges, construction of piers at the present locations of the abutments and a relocation of the abutments. In the report cited, consideration was given primarily to using a berm to stabilize the eastern approach slope. Normally, that method of increasing the stability of an unstable embankment is the most economical. However, loading the toe area of the existing slope with a berm was considered undesirable in the meeting of March 7, 1973, because a berm would extend into the Chaplin River channel and alter channel hydraulics by constricting the channel area. Furthermore, there was a question of whether the berm materials could withstand the high velocities of Chaplin River. Consequently, an in-depth stability analysis was performed which involved excavation of the approach embankment and a relocation of the abutments

Developmental and tissue-specific expression of NITRs

Novel immune-type receptors (NITRs) are encoded by large multi-gene families and share structural and signaling similarities to mammalian natural killer receptors (NKRs). NITRs have been identified in multiple bony fish species, including zebrafish, and may be restricted to this large taxonomic group. Thirty-nine NITR genes that can be classified into 14 families are encoded on zebrafish chromosomes 7 and 14. Herein, we demonstrate the expression of multiple NITR genes in the zebrafish ovary and during embryogenesis. All 14 families of zebrafish NITRs are expressed in hematopoietic kidney, spleen and intestine as are immunoglobulin and T cell antigen receptors. Furthermore, all 14 families of NITRs are shown to be expressed in the lymphocyte lineage, but not in the myeloid lineage, consistent with the hypothesis that NITRs function as NKRs. Sequence analyses of NITR amplicons identify known alleles and reveal additional alleles within the nitr1, nitr2, nitr3, and nitr5 families, reflecting the recent evolution of this gene family

Hamiltonian simulation with optimal sample complexity

© 2017 Author(s). We investigate the sample complexity of Hamiltonian simulation: how many copies of an unknown quantum state are required to simulate a Hamiltonian encoded by the density matrix of that state? We show that the procedure proposed by Lloyd, Mohseni, and Rebentrost [Nat. Phys., 10(9):631-633, 2014] is optimal for this task. We further extend their method to the case of multiple input states, showing how to simulate any Hermitian polynomial of the states provided. As applications, we derive optimal algorithms for commutator simulation and orthogonality testing, and we give a protocol for creating a coherent superposition of pure states, when given sample access to those states. We also show that this sample-based Hamiltonian simulation can be used as the basis of a universal model of quantum computation that requires only partial swap operations and simple single-qubit states.S.K. and C.Y.L. are funded by the Department of Defense. Racial/Ethnic differences in the prevalence of anxiety using the Vanderbilt ADHD scale in a diverse community outpatient setting

Objective Pediatric anxiety is prevalent but frequently under-diagnosed compared to other behavioral conditions in primary care practice. Pediatricians routinely screen for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder using the Vanderbilt Rating Scale, which includes a short screen for anxiety. We sought to examine the prevalence of potential anxiety among patients whose parents originally had concerns of disruptive behavior in a diverse setting and examine differences in anxiety across ethnic groups using the Vanderbilt ADHD Diagnostic Rating Scale (VADRS). Methods This was a cross-sectional analysis of medical records data of children between the ages of 5–12 years whose parents had concerns of disruptive behavior and received primary care from May 25, 2010 to January 31, 2014 at 2 pediatric community health clinics in Indianapolis. Results 16% of children whose parents had concerns for disruptive behavior screened positive for anxiety based on the VADRS screen. Hispanic parents were less likely to report symptoms of anxiety (Spanish-speaking: AOR 0.4, 95% CI 0.2 – 0.8; English-speaking: AOR 0.3, 95% CI 0.1 – 0.9) compared to white and black families. Conclusion Anxiety is detected at a lower rate among Hispanic pediatric patients using the VADRS. This may suggest differences in the performance of the VADRS among Spanish speaking families

Applying Grover's algorithm to AES: quantum resource estimates

We present quantum circuits to implement an exhaustive key search for the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and analyze the quantum resources required to carry out such an attack. We consider the overall circuit size, the number of qubits, and the circuit depth as measures for the cost of the presented quantum algorithms. Throughout, we focus on Clifford+T+T gates as the underlying fault-tolerant logical quantum gate set. In particular, for all three variants of AES (key size 128, 192, and 256 bit) that are standardized in FIPS-PUB 197, we establish precise bounds for the number of qubits and the number of elementary logical quantum gates that are needed to implement Grover's quantum algorithm to extract the key from a small number of AES plaintext-ciphertext pairs.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, 5 tables; to appear in: Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQCrypto 2016

Between the objectives raised in three projects consecutive UBACYT of investigation dedicated to attack different aspects from Efficient Energy Use those related to the subject of the illumination stand out. During their development numerous audits were made in individual in the commercial and public sector standing out that the illumination registers the greatest potential of saving. Considering the results and the recommendations conducted in these audits numerous works were made to improve the illumination in the “building Paseo Colon” of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Buenos Aires (FIUBA). In this publication the methodology adopted in the projects is described and it stands out the last work made on the quiet room of the central library.Asociación Argentina de Energías Renovables y Medio Ambiente (ASADES
