Streptomyces sparsus, sp. nov., a novel member of the genus Streptomyces from saline and alkaline soil in China

Salt and alkaline-tolerant actinomycete strain, YIM 90018T, was isolated from a saline and alkaline soil sample collected from Qinghai, China, and was then subjected to polyphasic taxonomy. Aerial hyphae of strain YIM 90018T were not produced on almost tested media except YIM 82# agar. Vegetative hyphae were abundant, developed well, and not fragmented. Straight or flexuous (Rectiflexibiles) spore chains. The strain grew well at 25% of MgCl2.6H2O and pH 10. All of these characters consistently assign the strain YIM 90018T to known species of the genus Streptomyces. Based on phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA, DNA-DNA hybridization, phenotypic characters and comparison with known species of the genus, strain YIM 90018T can be differentiated from all the validly described Streptomyces species. A novel species, Streptomyces sparsus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of the new species is YIM 90018T (CCTCC AA204019= DSM 41858T)

Abstract Currently, there exists little scholarship on Dr. Jay Alan Yim’s percussion music, and none exists for :only.just.almost.never for solo vibraphone. Establishing a performance practice guide will allow future percussionists a glimpse into the compositional process of Yim and allow them to expand their repertoire to include this challenging music. The purpose of this project is to create a comprehensive performance practice guide for :only.just.almost.never for solo vibraphone by Jay Alan Yim. Resources Required This project relies mainly on the score of :only.just.almost.never for solo vibraphone. I have also conducted multiple interviews with Yim regarding his compositional process, sketches, and companion pieces within this writing paradigm. It should be noted that this work can be played with Yim’s other modular works in his cycle for piano,[1] string quartet,[2] woodwind trio,[3] and chamber ensemble;[4] all of these scores are available from the composer. Project Format This project is a written performance practice guide for :only.just.almost.never for solo vibraphone.[5] Thus, it consists of pedagogical advice in learning and performing this work accompanied by specific score examples, visual diagrams, photos, and audio links. In addition, this paper discusses practical analyses of this composition’s complex rhythms. The author has recorded :only.just.almost.never, which has informed the pedagogical writings within this project. [1] Jay Alan Yim, :[ten]dril (Shinkyoku Edition, 1999). The 1931 Anti-Chinese Riot in Colonial Korea: A Focus on the Process of the Riot

This article analyzes the participation mechanisms and collective behavior displayed during the 1931 Anti-Chinese riot in colonial Korea. It focuses specifically on collectivity and its ability to transcend individual values and generate group behavior (e.g., riots), arguing that this collectivity has normative characteristics emerging from ethnic conflict. This approach is unique and can enable a better understanding of such behavior. First, the research takes the riots themselves and their place of occurrence as the central vantage point rather than focusing on the background factors that precipitated them. Second, this approach provides a more substantial explanatory process because it addresses the compulsory nature of crowd participation in addition to its voluntary nature. To contextualize this argument, the paper explores the significance of the Wanbaoshan incident that triggered Koreans at that time. This exploration reveals that Koreans’ mass participation can be accounted for by the idea of “perceived legitimacy” shared by rioters. Second, this paper investigates whether this perceived legitimacy coerced others to participate while also probing if specific norms led to selective and self-regulatory forms of violence and involvement. The paper also shows that the PyƏngyang riot (where the pogrom occurred) represents more than an isolated case; it is, instead, a more evolved form of rioting than that which occurred in other regions. Finally, the paper discusses the response of the security police to further contextualize how the riot progressed

    Play materials

This chapter presents the role of play in fostering health and wellbeing in children, identifying that curriculum guidelines and policies today, in many countries, take cognisance of these important facets of development. The chapter discusses what experts, such as Laevers (1994, 2004), state about wellbeing and how his international scale on wellbeing has also been used in the Australian contexts (DECS, 2008). Other important elements of play which are central to children’s health and wellbeing are presented with timely examples of how play contexts give children the much needed opportunities to grow and play in a healthy and confident way. Issues relating to technological toys, war play, commercialisation of play materials and safety criteria for selecting toys and equipment, are also presented
