    Changes in Liver Function Enzymes of HIV/AIDS Patients Treated with Antiretroviral Drugs (ARVS) in Specialist Hospital, Sokoto, Nigeria

    This study assessed the effect of Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Antiretroviral Drugs (ARVs) on liver enzyme markers (Aspartate aminotransferase, Alanine aminotransferase and Alkaline phosphatase) and CD4 T-cells. A total of Seventy Five (75) individuals were enrolled into the study, which comprised Twenty Five (25) HIV negative (control), Twenty Five (25) HIV positive non-treated with ARVs and Twenty Five (25) HIV positive treated with antiretroviral drugs (ARVs). Females were found to be the majority of HIV infected patients and most patients were at the middle age of 20-39 years. AST and ALT were assessed according to the Reitman and Frankel’s (1957) method, while ALP was based on King Armstrong’s (1980) method and CD4 T-cells using a method assayed of Cassens et al., (2004). The result show a significant increase (p<0.05) in AST and ALT levels of HIV positive non treated group compared to HIV negative group (control). AST and ALT levels of HIV positive treated with ARVs is significantly higher in comparison to HIV positive non-treated group. But the ALP activity was significantly lower (p<0.05) in HIV positive treated group compared to non-treated group. Infection by HIV increases the activities of the three enzymes, which may be due to liver cells apoptosis caused by HIV infection, intact immune response to HIV replication which subsequently leads to hepatocellular necrosis and inflammation. But at the commencement of antiretroviral therapy the activities of the three afore-mentioned enzymes decreases which may be as result of decrease in the negative effect of the virus to the liver enzymes by ARVs. For clinical significance, it is necessary to investigate the activities of liver enzymes in HIV positive patients in order to monitor the diagnosis and advanced infection of the liver cells by HIV.Keywords: Aspartate aminotransferase, Alanine aminotransferase, Alkaline phosphatase, Human immunodeficiency virus and antiretroviral drug

    Influence of ARVs on Some Biochemical Changes in Liver Non Enzymatic Markers of HIV Positive Patients Attending Specialist Hospital Sokoto, Nigeria

    Both HIV infection and antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) are associated with abnormalities of liver function, revealed by both enzymatic and non-enzymatic markers. This study evaluated the effect of HIV infection and antiretroviral drugs on the liver non enzymatic marker (total and direct bilirubin, total protein and albumin level) of HIV positive patients (pre-highly active antiretroviral therapy and those on therapies) attending the voluntary counselling and testing units in the state. Seventy five subjects were enrolled into the study, which constituted 25 HIV negative individuals (control group), 25 HIV positive patient not on antiretroviral therapy and 25 on the therapy. Bilirubin, albumin, total protein and CD4 cell count were determined using standard methods. Significantly (p<0.05) higher level of total bilirubin, direct bilirubin and total protein in the HIV positive non-treated with ARVs was observed compared to the control group. At the initiation of antiretroviral therapy the levels of the three parameters were lower, though statistically not significant except for total protein. Albumin level and CD4 cell count were significantly (p<0.05) lower in the non-treated group compared to the control subjects. But at the initiation of therapy the serum levels of Albumin and CD4 count was significantly (p<0.05) higher except for albumin level. HIV infection lowers the level of liver non enzymatic markers, which increase at the initiation of antiretroviral therapy.Keywords: Bilirubin, Albumin, Total protein and CD4 cel

    Computability of simple games: A characterization and application to the core

    The class of algorithmically computable simple games (i) includes the class of games that have finite carriers and (ii) is included in the class of games that have finite winning coalitions. This paper characterizes computable games, strengthens the earlier result that computable games violate anonymity, and gives examples showing that the above inclusions are strict.     3D simulation of morphological effect on reflectance of Si3N4 sub-wavelength structures for silicon solar cells

    In this study, we investigate the reflectance property of the cylinder, right circular cone, and square pyramid shapes of silicon nitride (Si3N4) subwavelength structure (SWS) with respect to different designing parameters. In terms of three critical factors, the reflectance for physical characteristics of wavelength dependence, the reflected power density for real power reflection applied on solar cell, and the normalized reflectance (reflected power density/incident power density) for real reflectance applied on solar cell, a full three-dimensional finite element simulation is performed and discussed for the aforementioned three morphologies. The result of this study shows that the pyramid shape of SWS possesses the best reflectance property in the optical region from 400 to 1000 nm which is useful for silicon solar cell applications

    Learning and Matching Multi-View Descriptors for Registration of Point Clouds

    Critical to the registration of point clouds is the establishment of a set of accurate correspondences between points in 3D space. The correspondence problem is generally addressed by the design of discriminative 3D local descriptors on the one hand, and the development of robust matching strategies on the other hand. In this work, we first propose a multi-view local descriptor, which is learned from the images of multiple views, for the description of 3D keypoints. Then, we develop a robust matching approach, aiming at rejecting outlier matches based on the efficient inference via belief propagation on the defined graphical model. We have demonstrated the boost of our approaches to registration on the public scanning and multi-view stereo datasets. The superior performance has been verified by the intensive comparisons against a variety of descriptors and matching methods

    Searching for Exoplanets Using a Microresonator Astrocomb

    Detection of weak radial velocity shifts of host stars induced by orbiting planets is an important technique for discovering and characterizing planets beyond our solar system. Optical frequency combs enable calibration of stellar radial velocity shifts at levels required for detection of Earth analogs. A new chip-based device, the Kerr soliton microcomb, has properties ideal for ubiquitous application outside the lab and even in future space-borne instruments. Moreover, microcomb spectra are ideally suited for astronomical spectrograph calibration and eliminate filtering steps required by conventional mode-locked-laser frequency combs. Here, for the calibration of astronomical spectrographs, we demonstrate an atomic/molecular line-referenced, near-infrared soliton microcomb. Efforts to search for the known exoplanet HD 187123b were conducted at the Keck-II telescope as a first in-the-field demonstration of microcombs

    Pattern recognition in financial time series is not a trivial task, due to level of noise, volatile context, lack of formal definitions and high number of pattern variants. A current research trend involves machine learning techniques and online computing. However, medium-term trading is still based on human centric heuristics, and the integration with machine learning support remains relatively unexplored. The purpose of this study is to investigate potential and perspectives of a novel architectural topology providing modularity, scalability and personalization capabilities. The proposed architecture is based on the concept of Receptive Fields (RF), i.e., sub-modules focusing on specific patterns, that can be connected to further levels of processing to analyze the price dynamics on different granularities and different abstraction levels.     HAGE (DDX43) is a biomarker for poor prognosis and a predictor of chemotherapy response in breast cancer

    Background: HAGE protein is a known immunogenic cancer-specific antigen. Methods: The biological, prognostic and predictive values of HAGE expression was studied using immunohistochemistry in three cohorts of patients with BC (n=2147): early primary (EP-BC; n=1676); primary oestrogen receptor-negative (PER-BC; n=275) treated with adjuvant anthracycline-combination therapies (Adjuvant-ACT); and primary locally advanced disease (PLA-BC) who received neo-adjuvant anthracycline-combination therapies (Neo-adjuvant-ACT; n=196). The relationship between HAGE expression and the tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in matched prechemotherapy and postchemotherapy samples were investigated. Results: Eight percent of patients with EP-BC exhibited high HAGE expression (HAGEĂľ) and was associated with aggressive clinico-pathological features (Ps<0.01). Furthermore, HAGEĂľexpression was associated with poor prognosis in both univariate and multivariate analysis (Ps<0.001). Patients with HAGE+ did not benefit from hormonal therapy in high-risk ER-positive disease. HAGE+ and TILs were found to be independent predictors for pathological complete response to neoadjuvant-ACT; P<0.001. A statistically significant loss of HAGE expression following neoadjuvant-ACT was found (P=0.000001), and progression-free survival was worse in those patients who had HAGE+ residual disease (P=0.0003). Conclusions: This is the first report to show HAGE to be a potential prognostic marker and a predictor of response to ACT in patients with BC

    QuantiFERON®-TB gold in-tube performance for diagnosing active tuberculosis in children and adults in a high burden setting.

    To determine whether QuantiFERON®-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT) can contribute to the diagnosis of active tuberculosis (TB) in children in a high-burden setting and to assess the performance of QFT and tuberculin skin test (TST) in a prospective cohort of TB suspect children compared to adults with confirmed TB in Tanzania. Sensitivity and specificity of QFT and TST for diagnosing active TB as well as indeterminate QFT rates and IFN-γ levels were assessed in 211 TB suspect children in a Tanzanian district hospital and contrasted in 90 adults with confirmed pulmonary TB. Sensitivity of QFT and TST in children with confirmed TB was 19% (5/27) and 6% (2/31) respectively. In adults sensitivity of QFT and TST was 84% (73/87) and 85% (63/74). The QFT indeterminate rate in children and adults was 27% and 3%. Median levels of IFN-γ were lower in children than adults, particularly children <2 years and HIV infected. An indeterminate result was associated with age <2 years but not malnutrition or HIV status. Overall childhood mortality was 19% and associated with an indeterminate QFT result at baseline. QFT and TST showed poor performance and a surprisingly low sensitivity in children. In contrast the performance in Tanzanian adults was good and comparable to performance in high-income countries. Indeterminate results in children were associated with young age and increased mortality. Neither test can be recommended for diagnosing active TB in children with immature or impaired immunity in a high-burden setting

    Amyand's Hernia – Case Report and Review of the Literature

    Amyand's hernia is an extremely rare condition in which the appendix is positioned in the inguinal hernia sac. Acute appendicitis is much less common in this situation and few reports are found in the literature. We report a case of acute appendicitis with the tip of the appendix incarcerated outside the external ring of the right groin. A mobilized cecum and ascending colon were noticed during surgery. We conducted a review of the literature, emphasizing possible causes and suggesting a predisposing factor for the condition
