    Cost-minimizing preemptive scheduling of mapreduce workloads on hybrid clouds

    MapReduce has become the dominant programming model for processing massive amounts of data on cloud platforms. More and more enterprises are now utilizing hybrid clouds, consisting of private infrastructure owned by themselves and public clouds such as Amazon EC2, to process their spiky MapReduce workloads, which fully utilize their own on-premise resources while outsourcing the tasks only when needed. With disparate workloads of different MapReduce tasks, an efficient scheduling mechanism is in need to enable efficient utilization of the on-premise resources and to minimize the task outsourcing cost, while meeting the task completion time requirements as well. In this paper, a fine-grained model is described to characterize the scheduling of heterogeneous MapReduce workloads, and an online algorithm is proposed for joint task admission control into the private cloud, task outsourcing to the public cloud, and VM allocation to execute the admitted tasks on the private cloud, such that the time-averaged task outsourcing cost is minimized over the long run. The online algorithm features preemptive scheduling of the tasks, where a task executed partially on the on-premise infrastructure can be paused and scheduled to run later. It also achieves desirable properties such as meeting a pre-set task admission ratio and bounding the worst-case task completion time, as proven by our rigorous theoretical analysis. © 2013 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Direct application of plasmid DNA containing type I interferon transgenes to vaginal mucosa inhibits HSV-2 mediated mortality

    The application of naked DNA containing type I interferon (IFN) transgenes is a promising potential therapeutic approach for controlling chronic viral infections. Herein, we detail the application of this approach that has been extensively used to restrain ocular HSV-1 infection, for antagonizing vaginal HSV-2 infection. We show that application of IFN-α1, -α5, and –β transgenes to vaginal mouse lumen 24 hours prior to HSV-2 infection reduces HSV-2 mediated mortality by 2.5 to 3-fold. However, other type I IFN transgenes (IFN- α4, -α5, -α6, and –α9) are non effectual against HSV-2. We further show that the efficacy of IFN-α1 transgene treatment is independent of CD4+ T lymphocytes. However, in mice depleted of CD8+ T lymphocytes, the ability of IFN-α1 transgene treatment to antagonize HSV-2 was lost

    How authentic leadership influences team performance:the mediating role of team reflexivity

    This study examines how authentic leadership influences team performance via the mediating mechanism of team reflexivity. Adopting a self-regulatory perspective, we propose that authentic leadership will predict the specific team regulatory process of reflexivity, which in turn will be associated with two outcomes of team performance; effectiveness and productivity. Using survey data from 53 teams in three organizations in the United Kingdom and Greece and controlling for collective trust, we found support for our stated hypotheses with the results indicating a significant fully mediated relationship. As predicted the self-regulatory behaviors inherent in the process of authentic leadership served to collectively shape team behavior, manifesting in the process of team reflexivity, which, in turn, positively predicted team performance. We conclude with a discussion of how this study extends theoretical understanding of authentic leadership in relation to teamwork and delineate several practical implications for leaders and organizations

Despite the substantial work in the domain of transportation science by both the industry and academia, there are few studies in applying case-based reasoning (CBR) approach to modelling the risk of driver fatigue. This research explores the potential for fatigued driving using a database of 16,459 traffic crashes reported from 21 cities in Guangdong province, China from 2006 to 2010. The CBR system under development differentiates between fatigued-driving and non-fatigued-driving cases based on various personal and environmental traffic characteristics.
