    A Dual Inhibitor of the Proteasome Catalytic Subunits LMP2 and Y Attenuates Disease Progression in Mouse Models of Alzheimer\u27s Disease

    The immunoproteasome (iP) is a variant of the constitutive proteasome (cP) that is abundantly expressed in immune cells which can also be induced in somatic cells by cytokines such as TNF-α or IFN-γ. Accumulating evidence support that the iP is closely linked to multiple facets of inflammatory response, eventually leading to the development of several iP inhibitors as potential therapeutic agents for autoimmune diseases. Recent studies also found that the iP is upregulated in reactive glial cells surrounding amyloid β (Aβ) deposits in brains of Alzheimer\u27s disease (AD) patients, but the role it plays in the pathogenesis of AD remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of several proteasome inhibitors on cognitive function in AD mouse models and found that YU102, a dual inhibitor of the iP catalytic subunit LMP2 and the cP catalytic subunit Y, ameliorates cognitive impairments in AD mouse models without affecting Aβ deposition. The data obtained from our investigation revealed that YU102 suppresses the secretion of inflammatory cytokines from microglial cells. Overall, this study indicates that there may exist a potential link between LMP2/Y and microglia-mediated neuroinflammation and that inhibition of these subunits may offer a new therapeutic strategy for AD

    A Large Bandgap Shift in InGaAs(P)/InP Multi-Quantum Well Structure Obtained by Impurity-Free Vacancy Diffusion Using SiO2 Capping and its Application to Photodetectors

    In this paper, we have investigated the bandgap tuning in the InGaAs (P)/ InP multiquantum well (MQW) structure obtained by impurity-free vacancy diffusion (IFVD) using low temperature photoluminescence (PL). The MQW intermixing was performed in a rapid thermal annealer (RTA) using the dielectric capping materials, Si02 and SiNX. The Si02 capping was successfully used with InGaAs cap layer to cause a large bandgap tuning effect in the InGaAs/InP MQW material. The blue shift of bandgap energy after RTA treatment was as much as 185 and 230 meV at 750 t and 850 t, respectively, with its value controllable using annealing time and temperature. Samples with Si02-InP or SiN-InGaAs cap layer combinations, on the other hand, did not show any significant energy shifts. The absorption spectra taken from the same samples confimed the energy shifts obtained using PL.     Effect of polishing and glazing on the color and spectral distribution of monolithic zirconia

    PURPOSE : The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of polishing and glazing on the color and spectral distribution of monolithic zirconia. MATERIALS AND METHODS : Forty-five monolithic zirconia specimens (16.3 mm × 16.4 mm × 2.0 mm) were fabricated and divided into 5 groups according to the number of A2-coloring liquid applications (Group I to V). Each group was divided into 3 subgroups according to the method of surface treatments (n=3): N: no treatment; P: polishing; G: glazing. Color and spectral distribution of five different areas of each specimen were measured according to CIELAB color space in the reflectance mode relative to the standard illuminant D65 on a reflection spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukeys HSD test, Pearson correlation and regression analysis (α=.05). RESULTS : There was a significant difference in CIE L* between Subgroup N and P, and in CIE b* between Subgroup P and G in eachgroup. Spectral reflectance generally decreased in Subgroup P and G in comparison with Subgroup N. Color differences between Subgroup P and G were within the perceptibility threshold (ΔE*ab0.88, P<.001). CONCLUSION : A perceptible color difference can be detected after polishing of monolithic zirconia.     A Case of Sparganosis That Presented as a Recurrent Pericardial Effusion

    Sparganosis is caused by a larval tapeworm of the genus Spirometra, which commonly invades subcutaneous tissue, but less frequently invades muscle, intestines, spinal cord, and the peritoneopleural cavity. The authors managed a female patient who presented with a recurrent pericardiopleural effusion and peripheral eosinophilia. The anti-sparganum-specific IgG serum level was significantly higher than normal control levels. In this patient, sparganosis was caused by the ingestion of raw frogs in an effort to control her thyroid disease. The recurrent pericardiopleural effusion and peripheral eosinophilia were controlled by 3 consecutive doses of praziquantel (75 mg/kg/day). The patient is doing well 4 years after presentation. Sparganosis should be considered a rare, but possible cause of recurrent pericardial effusion and peripheral eosinophilia. Immunoserologic testing using enzyme linked immunosorbent assays can be helpful in diagnosing human sparganosis, especially in cases without a subcutaneous lump or mass. Praziquantel is an alternative treatment for sparganosis in surgically-unresectable cases

    Hidradenoma papilliferum (HP) is a benign neoplasm arising from mammary-like glands which typically involves the dermal layer of the female anogenital area. The prognosis for HP is good. Recurrence is unusual and is typically attributed to incomplete excision of the primary tumor. Malignant transformation is rare and HP of the breast has not yet been reported. Ectopic HP is usually solitary, small, and asymptomatic. It appears as a well-circumscribed, complex cystic mass in the dermis on ultrasound.
