The f-vector of the descent polytope

For a positive integer n and a subset S of [n-1], the descent polytope DP_S is the set of points x_1, ..., x_n in the n-dimensional unit cube [0,1]^n such that x_i >= x_{i+1} for i in S and x_i <= x_{i+1} otherwise. First, we express the f-vector of DP_S as a sum over all subsets of [n-1]. Second, we use certain factorizations of the associated word over a two-letter alphabet to describe the f-vector. We show that the f-vector is maximized when the set S is the alternating set {1,3,5, ...}. We derive a generating function for the f-polynomial F_S(t) of DP_S, written as a formal power series in two non-commuting variables with coefficients in Z[t]. We also obtain the generating function for the Ehrhart polynomials of the descent polytopes.Comment: 14 pages; to appear in Discrete & Computational Geometr

L(d,2,1)-Labeling of Star and Sun Graphs

    Get PDF
    For positive integer d, L(d,2,1)-labeling of a graph G is a function f from V(G) to the positive integers, f: V(G) {1, 2,…} such that |f(u) – f(v)| ≥ d if the distance between any 2 vertices u and v is 1 (D(u,v) =1), |f(u) – f(v)| ≥ 2 if D(u,v) = 2, and |f(u) – f(v)| ≥ 1 if D(u,v) = 3. The L(d,2,1)-labeling number kd(G) of a graph G is the smallest positive integer kd such that G has an L(d,2,1)-labeling with kd as the maximum label. This paper presents a general kd-value of stars K1,n and kd-value of sun graphs Sn for d = 3. Keywords: L(d,2,1)-Labeling, distance, L(d,2,1)-Labeling number, sun graphs, stars

Decoherence of multimode thermal squeezed coherent states

    Get PDF
It is well known that any multimode positive definite quadratic Hamiltonian can be transformed into a Hamiltonian of uncoupled harmonic oscillators. Based on this theorem, the multimode thermal squeezed coherent states are constructed in terms of density operators. Decoherence of multimode thermal squeezed coherent states is investigated via the characteristic function and it is shown that the decohered (reduced) states are still thermal squeezed coherent states in general

    The novels of Roddy Doyle

    Get PDF
This dissertation is a critical examination of the five published novels of Roddy Doyle, The Commitments, The Snapper, The Van, Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha, and The Woman Who Walked into Doors. Since this dissertation will be the first of its kind about Doyle, its basic purpose will be to introduce the novels to the reading public and to convince the reading public that Doyle, although a very popular artist, is also a gifted writer who should be taken seriously. There are six chapters: an introduction and a chapter devoted to each novel. The introduction offers an overview of Doyle's works and a discussion of the qualities of his novels each subsequent chapter will examine. Each chapter discusses one of Doyle's novels by examining the following: his innovative use of language; his manipulation of his audience's reaction via humor and comedy; the role, however slight, of religion and politics; his overall social vision as projected in the novels both individually and as part of the complete body of work. The analysis also examines other prominent aspects of the individual novels, namely, the function of music in The Commitments; Sharon's character development in The Snapper, the grimness and despair of The Van; the use of double-writing in Paddy Clarke; and the way Paula's life may be seen as a metaphor for the abuses women suffer in a patriarchal society in The Woman. An extensive interview with Doyle, which he was gracious enough to grant me several months ago, is included as an appendix

Simple Playground for Euphonium in F Major

The simplicity found in this work was hard to capture in program notes. Nevertheless, you will hear a grounded sense of play with a largely euphonious background. This piece was composed on a 1722 Briggenschaft Euphonium

Impact of Japanese Mergers on Shareholder Wealth: An Analysis of Bidder and Target Companies

    Get PDF
The market for corporate control in the second largest economy in the world behaves very different from that in the U.S. Using a sample of 91 mergers in the period 1982-2003 we document several distinctive features of this market in Japan. First, we show that in stark contrast to the pro-cyclical U.S. merger waves, mergers in Japan tend to be counter-cyclical, both with respect to the general economy as well as with respect to stock market valuations. Second, and again in contrast to the U.S. experience, we find that a significant fraction of Japanese mergers are orchestrated by the main banks; in such cases, mergers are not between two weak companies, but at least one of the merging companies is financially strong. Other distinctive features of Japanese mergers are the positive pre-announcement returns accruing to both bidders and targets, with bidders capturing approximately half the gains that accrue to target firms. We also find differential shareholder wealth effects in the bubble period (1982-1989), the early 1990s, and the post-financial regulation regime (1997-2003). Overall our results point to a market for corporate control that is distinctly less shareholder-centered than that in the U.S. and one where creditors play an important, perhaps dominant, role

Reducing Restraint Use for Older Adults in Acute Care

    Get PDF
Although no evidence shows that restraints are effective for maintaining safety, preventing disruption of treatment, or controlling behavior, they're still commonly used in acute care facilities (especially in critical care) in the United States, where the reported prevalence of their use ranges from 7.4% to 17%.[1–3] They may be used to protect patients from falls or to prevent them from inadvertently removing tubes and other devices.[4] Older adults are three times more likely to be restrained during an acute hospital admission than younger patients, even though this practice is associated with poor outcomes.[1] (See Adverse effects of physical restraints.
