Evaluating The Performance Of Unconfined Compressive Strength Of Trong Clay Stabilized With Granite Sludge

    Get PDF
This research paper aims to evaluate the potential usability of granite sludge as a stabilizer of Trong clay based on compressive strength. There are eight mixture combination between the clay and the stabilizer with ratios of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 wt% granite sludge. The value of shear strength is obtained through unconfined compression tests performed in the laboratory. The research found that the performance of unconfined compressive strength increased with the percentage of stabilizer. Sample S7 which contains 7% granite sludge is found to yield the highest unconfined compressive strength of 585kN/m2. This is 187% higher than unstrengthened sample. This study found that, the compressive strength improved with increased granite sludge content in the soil mixture.

Aspects of power corrections in hadron-hadron collisions

The program of understanding inverse-power law corrections to event shapes and energy flow observables in e+ e- annihilation to two jets and DIS (1+1) jets has been a significant success of QCD phenomenology over the last decade. The important extension of this program to similar observables in hadron collisions is not straightforward, being obscured by both conceptual and technical issues. In this paper we shed light on some of these issues by providing an estimate of power corrections to the inter-jet E_t flow distribution in hadron collisions using the techniques that were employed in the e+ e- annihilation and DIS cases.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure, uses JHEP3.cl

Functional outcomes of conservatively treated clavicle fractures

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of the study was to analyze the outcomes of clavicle fractures in adults treated non-surgically and to evaluate the clinical effects of displacement, fracture patterns, fracture location, fracture comminution, shortening and fracture union on shoulder function. METHODS: Seventy clavicle fractures were non-surgically treated in the Orthopedics Department at the Tuanku Ja'afar General Hospital, a tertiary care hospital in Seremban, Malaysia, an average of six months after injury. The clavicle fractures were treated conservatively with an arm sling and a figure-eight splint for three weeks. No attempt was made to reduce displaced fractures, and the patients were allowed immediate free-shoulder mobilization, as tolerated. They were prospectively evaluated clinically and radiographically. Shoulder function was evaluated using the Constant scoring technique. RESULTS: There were statistically significant functional outcome impairments in non-surgically treated clavicle fractures that correlated with the fracture type (comminution), the fracture displacement (21 mm or more), shortening (15 mm or more) and the fracture union (malunion). CONCLUSION: This article reveals the need for surgical intervention to treat clavicle fractures and improve shoulder functional outcomes

Aim: To assess the probiotic effects of Lactobacillus agilis JCM 1048 and L. sali-varius ssp. salicinius JCM 1230 and the pH on the cecal microflora of chicken and metabolic end products. Methods and Results: An in vitro system, operated with batch bioreactor, was used for this assessment. Selected bacterial species were monitored at two pH values, over 24 h of batch culture incubation. The concentration of short chain fatty acids (SCFA) and lactate in the fermented material was also determined. The addition of L. agilis JCM 1048 and L. salivarius ssp. salicinius JCM 1230 into vessel 2 (Cc + P) increased the total anaerobes, lactobacilli and bifidobacteria after 24 h incubation. Moreover, lactobacilli supplementation decreased the total aerobes and streptococci, but it did not have any effects on coliforms. The supplementation of lactobacilli in vessel 2 (Cc + P) was found to significantly increase the production of lactate, propionate and butyrate. Further- more, pH did not alter the formation of butyrate, whereas the production of acetate and propionate was significantly decreased at pH = 5Æ 8.Conclusions:L. agilis JCM 1048 and L. salivarius ssp. salicinius JCM 1230, as probiotic bacteria, have the ability to re-establish proper microbial balance by the formation of lactate as well as propionate, and stimulate butyrate-producing bacteria to produce butyrate in the chicken cecum. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study was the first to report this under in vitro conditions, highlighting the probiotic roles of the two Lactobacillus strains in broiler cecal fermentation at different initial pH. These useful data can be helpful in improving the fermentation process in chicken cecum

Improving irrigation water delivery performance of a large-scale rice irrigation scheme

The availability of irrigation water and its equitable allocation in a large-scale rice irrigation scheme of Malaysia have been modeled. The model reliably estimates available water for irrigation at the intake of the main canal and simulates the recommended irrigation deliveries for 120 tertiary canals. Different water allocation and management scenarios were evaluated based on the sensitivity of the growth stages of rice to water, varying field-water demand, and perceived water shortages. The model provides a quantitative assessment not only of water allocation for irrigation but also of day-to-day or periodic irrigation delivery performances for a large-scale rice irrigation system. It provides 86% adequacy and 87% equity of irrigation delivery in the main season (August-December). The corresponding performance indicators provided by the model are 74 and 89% in the off-season (February-June). The dependability of water supply is higher in the off-season than in the main season, while the relative water supply (RWS) is the converse. RWS often becomes >1.0 in the main season, while such a RWS is rarely obtained in the off-season. The model augments the water delivery performance of the scheme and hence would serve as a useful tool for irrigation managers in decision making
