Polysemy Effects: Evidence For Dual Access Routes To Word Meanings

    Get PDF
The effects of polysemy (number of meanings) and word frequency were examined in lexical decision and naming tasks. Polysemy effects were observed in both tasks. In the lexical decision task, polysemy was additive with frequency. Polysemy effects appeared for both high and low frequency words. In the naming task, however, polysemy effects interacted with frequency, with polysemy effects being limited to low frequency words. When degraded stimuli were used in both tasks, the interaction appeared not only in naming but also in lexical decision. When pronounceable nonwords were replaced by pseudohomophones in lexical decision tasks, however, polysemy was once again additive with frequency regardless of stimulus quality. The differential patterns of results can be explained in terms of whether the task required orthographically based or phonologically based responses. Since polysemy effects are assumed to be evidence of semantic access, the differential results seem to reflect two independent access routes to semantic representations. The nature of these access routes is discussed

A 75-year old woman, complaining of prolapse of the uterus, was detected a giant tumor in therectum by abdominal CT scan. Enhanced CT revealed a heterogeneous mass in the pelvic cavitymeasuring 8 cm. MRI demonstrated a mass in the rectovaginal seputum, showing heterogeneoushigh intensity on T1 and T2 weighed image. Abdominoperineal excision of the rectum was performed.Macroscopically, the resected specimen showed a solid tumor with central hemorrhagicnecrosis, 10×5 cm in size. Histological examination showed fascicular proliferated spindle-shapedcells invaded to subserosa. Immunohistochemical studies showed a GIST of the rectum withpositive staining for c-kit and CD34, and negative staining for α-SMA, S-100 protein. No evidenceof recurrence has been found in the 2 years since. We report a case of giant GIST of the rectum.Because the risk of the recurrence depends on operation curability adequate resection margin isneeded for surgical approach for GIST

MicroRNA-338-3p and microRNA-451 contribute to the formation of basolateral polarity in epithelial cells

MicroRNAs are small noncoding RNA species, some of which are playing important roles in cell differentiation. However, the level of participations of microRNAs in epithelial cell differentiation is largely unknown. Here, utilizing an epithelial differentiation model with T84 cells, we demonstrate that miR-338-3p and miR-451 contribute to the formation of epithelial basolateral polarity by facilitating translocalization of β1 integrin to the basolateral membrane. Among 250 microRNAs screened in this study, the expression levels of four microRNAs (miR-33a, 210, 338-3p and 451) were significantly elevated in the differentiated stage of T84 cells, when epithelial cell polarity was established. To investigate the involvement of these microRNAs in terms of epithelial cell polarity, we executed loss-of- and gain-of-function analyses of these microRNAs. The blockade of endogenous miR-338-3p or miR-451 via each microRNA-specific antisense oligonucleotides inhibited the translocalization of β1 integrin to the basolateral membrane, whereas inhibition of miR-210 or miR-33a had no effect on it. On the other hand, simultaneous transfection of synthetic miR-338-3p and miR-451 accelerated the translocalization of β1 integrin to the basolateral membrane, although the introduction of individual synthetic microRNAs exhibited no effect. Therefore, we concluded that both miR-338-3p and miR-451 are necessary for the development of epithelial cell polarity

Production of scFv-Conjugated Affinity Silk Powder by Transgenic Silkworm Technology

Bombyx mori (silkworm) silk proteins are being utilized as unique biomaterials for medical applications. Chemical modification or post-conjugation of bioactive ligands expand the applicability of silk proteins; however, the processes are elaborate and costly. In this study, we used transgenic silkworm technology to develop single-chain variable fragment (scFv)-conjugated silk fibroin. The cocoons of the transgenic silkworm contain fibroin L-chain linked with scFv as a fusion protein. After dissolving the cocoons in lithium bromide, the silk solution was dialyzed, concentrated, freeze-dried, and crushed into powder. Immunoprecipitation analyses demonstrate that the scFv domain retains its specific binding activity to the target molecule after multiple processing steps. These results strongly suggest the promise of scFv-conjugated silk fibroin as an alternative affinity reagent, which can be manufactured using transgenic silkworm technology at lower cost than traditional affinity carriers

High temperature oxidation of liquid Ti-Cu alloy at 1473K

The kinetics of oxidation of liquid Cu-0.5mass%Ti alloy at 1473K in CO2-CO gas mixture has been investigated by varying the oxygen potential. The PO2 is set to be enough to oxidize Ti in liquid Cu-Ti alloy but not for the oxidation of liquid Cu. Alloy samples were taken with a quartz tube during the experiments and Ti and O contents in the samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma method, and infrared absorption method. The phases of the formed titanium oxide layers were consisted of several different titanium oxides and were identified by using EBSD. The oxidation rate was evaluated based on the change of the Ti content in the Cu-Ti melts. The apparent overall oxidation rate is reasonably represented by the parabolic rate law. This oxidation behaviour was well explained based on the multi-layered oxidation theory.11Nsciescopu
