    necoMAC: Network coding aware MAC protocol for multirate wireless networks

    In this paper we introduce a network coding aware Medium Access Control (necoMAC) scheme that incorporates many protocols such as NCA-2PSP, 2PSP and NCA-CSMA in order to provide data transmission in higher rates with fewer number of transmissions for multirate wireless networks. We create two golden topologies called golden chain and golden triangle, and calculate their energy consumption, overhead ratio, throughput and fairness for each protocol. We also set up a simulation to further analyze the performance of these protocols with the increasing number of nodes and flows. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides higher throughput and less energy consumption compared to the conventional CSMA/CA

    Support for ECHONET-based smart home environments in the universAAL ecosystem

    With the advent of information and communication technology, many Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) solutions are being proposed to increase the quality of life of elderly people and reduce health and social care costs. Among these AAL solutions, universAAL seems to be the most promising platform for easy and economical development of AAL services. However, in its current state, the platform is incompatible with smart home systems which are based on the ECHONET standard. This paper presents the bridging between the universAAL and ECHONET standards through a technical point of view and thereby enables AAL services for ECHONET-based smart home environments

    Greedy Scheduling with Feedback Control for Overloaded Real-Time Systems

    Abstract-In real-time systems, a task is required to be completed before its deadline. When workload is heavy, the system may become overloaded. Under such condition, some tasks may miss their deadlines. To deal with this overload problem, the design of scheduling algorithm is crucial. In this paper, we focus on studying on-line scheduling for overloaded realtime systems. The objective is to maximize the total number of tasks that meet their deadlines. To achieve this goal, the idea of greedy algorithm is used to propose a greedy scheduling (GS) algorithm. In each time, GS makes an optimum choice for currently known task set. As the uncertainty of new arriving tasks, GS cannot make an optimum choice for the set of overall tasks. To deal with this uncertainty, by applying feedback control, a greedy scheduling with feedback control (GSFC) is introduced. Three widely used scheduling algorithms and their corresponding deferrable scheduling (DS) methods are discussed and compared with GSFC. Simulation results reveal that GSFC can effectively improve the system performance

    Discovery of Large-Scale Gravitational Infall in a Massive Protostellar Cluster

    We report Mopra (ATNF), Anglo-Australian Telescope, and Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment observations of a molecular clump in Carina, BYF73 = G286.21+0.17, which give evidence of large-scale gravitational infall in the dense gas. From the millimetre and far-infrared data, the clump has mass ~ 2 x 10^4 Msun, luminosity ~ 2-3 x 10^4 Lsun, and diameter ~ 0.9 pc. From radiative transfer modelling, we derive a mass infall rate ~ 3.4 x 10^-2 Msun yr-1. If confirmed, this rate for gravitational infall in a molecular core or clump may be the highest yet seen. The near-infrared K-band imaging shows an adjacent compact HII region and IR cluster surrounded by a shell-like photodissociation region showing H2 emission. At the molecular infall peak, the K imaging also reveals a deeply embedded group of stars with associated H2 emission. The combination of these features is very unusual and we suggest they indicate the ongoing formation of a massive star cluster.     Multiple Scedosporium apiospermum abscesses in a woman survivor of a tsunami in northeastern Japan: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p><it>Scedosporium apiospermum </it>is increasingly recognized as a cause of localized and disseminated mycotic infections in near-drowning victims.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 59-year-old Japanese woman who was a survivor of a tsunami in northeastern Japan and who had lung and brain abscesses caused by <it>S. apiospermum</it>. Initially, an aspergillus infection was suspected, so she was treated with micafungin. However, computed tomography scans of her chest revealed lung abscesses, and magnetic resonance images demonstrated multiple abscesses in her brain. <it>S. apiospermum </it>was cultured from her bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and antimycotic therapy with voriconazole was initiated. Since she developed an increase in the frequency of premature ventricular contractions, an adverse drug reaction to the voriconazole was suspected. She was started on a treatment of a combination of low-dose voriconazole and liposomal amphotericin B. After combination therapy, further computed tomography scans of the chest and magnetic resonance images of her brain showed a demarcation of abscesses.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Voriconazole appeared to have a successful record in treating scedosporiosis after a near drowning but, owing to several adverse effects, may possibly not be recommended. Thus, a combination treatment of low-dose voriconazole and liposomal amphotericin B may be a safe and effective treatment for an <it>S. apiospermum </it>infection. Even though a diagnosis of scedosporiosis may be difficult, a fast and correct etiological diagnosis could improve the patient's chance of recovery in any case.</p

    Downregulated parafibromin expression is a promising marker for pathogenesis, invasion, metastasis and prognosis of gastric carcinomas

    Parafibromin is a protein encoded by the hyperparathyroidism 2 oncosuppressor gene and its downregulated expression is involved in pathogenesis of parathyroid carcinomas. To clarify the roles of parafibromin expression in tumourigenesis and progression of gastric carcinomas, it was examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) on tissue microarray containing gastric carcinomas (n = 508), adenomas (n = 45) and gastritis (n = 49) with a comparison of its expression with clinicopathological parametres of carcinomas. Gastric carcinoma cell lines (MKN28, AGS, MKN45, KATO-III and HGC-27) were studied for parafibromin expression by IHC and western blot. Parafibromin expression was localised in the nucleus of gastric epithelial cells, adenoma, carcinoma cells and cell lines. Its expression was gradually decreased from gastritis to gastric carcinoma, through gastric adenomas (p < 0.05) and inversely correlated with tumour size, depth of invasion, lymphatic invasion, lymph node metastasis and Union Internationale Contre le Cancer (UICC) staging (p < 0.05) but not with sex or venous invasion (p > 0.05). Parafibromin was strongly expressed in older carcinoma patients compared with younger ones (p < 0.05). There was stronger positivity of parafibromin in intestinal-type than diffuse-type carcinomas (p < 0.05). Univariate analysis indicated cumulative survival rate of patients with positive parafibromin expression to be higher than without its expression (p < 0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that age, tumour size, depth of invasion, lymphatic invasion, lymph node metastasis, UICC staging and Lauren’s classification but not sex, venous invasion or parafibromin expression were independent prognostic factors for carcinomas(p < 0.05). Downregulated parafibromin expression possibly contributed to pathogenesis, growth, invasion and metastasis of gastric carcinomas. It was considered as a promising marker to indicate the aggressive behaviours and prognosis of gastric carcinomas

    A prospective compound screening contest identified broader inhibitors for Sirtuin 1

    Potential inhibitors of a target biomolecule, NAD-dependent deacetylase Sirtuin 1, were identified by a contest-based approach, in which participants were asked to propose a prioritized list of 400 compounds from a designated compound library containing 2.5 million compounds using in silico methods and scoring. Our aim was to identify target enzyme inhibitors and to benchmark computer-aided drug discovery methods under the same experimental conditions. Collecting compound lists derived from various methods is advantageous for aggregating compounds with structurally diversified properties compared with the use of a single method. The inhibitory action on Sirtuin 1 of approximately half of the proposed compounds was experimentally accessed. Ultimately, seven structurally diverse compounds were identified
