Based on the data from the 2017 Religion Monitor, this special evaluation focuses on how people in Germany view successful coexistence in the presence of cultural and religious diversity. We explored this in a representative survey based on four typical approaches to living together in diversity: cultural adaptation of immigrants to the host society, the merging of different cultures and traditions (fusion), the preservation of different cultures, and the adaptation of the majority population to traditions of the immigrants. The goal was to determine, based on the preferences of respondents for a particular model, their views on how much one side ought to move toward the other, the two sides ought to move toward each other—or neither side should move toward the other

Nutzung und Bedarf an Informationsangeboten in der Biologie : Ergebnisse einer internetbasierten Befragung

Die zunehmende Bedeutung des Internets für den Informationstransfer stellt Bibliotheken vor eine neue Herausforderung. Es stellt sich die Frage, in welcher Weise Bibliotheken auf diese Entwicklung reagieren können. Um dieser Frage nachzugehen, hat die Senckenbergische Bibliothek in Frankfurt eine Studie in Auftrag gegeben, die anhand einer bundesweiten Befragung das aktuelle Informationsverhalten wie auch den aktuellen Informationsbedarf von Biologen in Deutschland ermittelt hat. Die Befragung wurde im November 2003 durchgeführt. Biologen aus verschiedenen Tätigkeitsbereichen wurden nach Kenntnis, Nutzung und Wichtigkeit von konventionellen und neuen Informationsangeboten bzw. quellen befragt. Insgesamt haben 1582 Biologen an der Befragung teilgenommen. Die Ergebnisse sollen dazu beitragen, das Angebot der Sondersammelgebiete der Senckenbergischen Bibliothek den aktuellen Bedürfnissen ihrer Nutzer anzupassen und bei Bedarf ein zentrales Informationsportal für biologische Literatur- und Fachinformation aufzubauen, das den Erwartungen der Nutzer entspricht

Star Formation Histories of Southern Compact Groups

Compact group galaxies are a common phase in galaxy evolution and provide insight into the process that transforms galaxies from isolated, star forming late-type galaxies to passive galaxies in high density environments. I mapped spectrally the central and middle regions of 40 galaxies in 10 Southern Compact Groups and established group membership by redshift. Of the eight groups with all members observed, I found that one galaxy is not in the group in four cases. I obtained ages and metallicities of the stellar populations using the STARLIGHT code to summarize past star formation and current activity. Galaxies that are part of a group showed both high-metallicity stellar populations, indicating rapid processing of gas through multiple star formation episodes, and low-metallicity star formation. Thus, Southern Compact Group galaxies have a wide range of stellar population properties, indicating that these groups are in different stages of evolution.Doctor of Philosoph

Abbrüche bei Online-Befragungen: Ergebnisse einer Befragung von Medizinern

Der Beitrag befasst sich mit dem hohen Anteil von Abbrüchen bei Online-Befragungen am Beispiel einer Befragung von Medizinern. Die Abbrüche erfolgen zum einen direkt bei der Kontaktierung, d.h. die zu Befragenden reagieren nicht auf ein zuvor verschicktes Anschreiben bzw. auf eine Aufforderung via Banner oder via Pop-up Fenster. Zum anderen wird häufig die Startseite der Untersuchung aufgerufen, nicht aber der Fragebogen. Die hier interessierenden Abbrüche sind jene, die während der Bearbeitung des Fragebogens entstehen. Um den Einfluss der Rekrutierungsmethode auf das Abbruchverhalten zu untersuchen, werden die Daten einer Online-Befragung verwendet, die mit Hilfe von drei unterschiedlichen Rekrutierungsarten durchgeführt wurde (E-Mail, Banner, Pop-up Fenster). Die Umfrage findet im Zeitraum von Juni bis August 2001 statt, wobei von 2.801 Personen 926 Personen die Befragung abgebrochen haben. Anhand der empirischen Untersuchung wird gezeigt, dass der Anteil der Abbrüche mit der Art der Ansprache (E-Mail, Banner, Pop-up Fenster), mit fragebogenspezifischen Faktoren (u.a. The five dimensions of Muslim religiosity: results of an empirical study

"In this paper a new instrument measuring Muslim religiosity is presented. Drawing on Glock’s multidimensional concept of religiosity, a quantitative paper-and-pencil study among 228 Muslims living in German cities was carried out. While previous studies have often simply translated indicators measuring Christian religiosity into Islamic terminology, this study applies Glock’s model taking into account the specific characteristics of Islamic piety. In particular, the function of his fifth dimension of secular consequences was modified: Contrary to other denominations, in Islam this dimension is regarded to be as unique and independent as the other four. Empirical findings confirm this assumption. Applying principal component analysis with oblimin rotation yields a five-dimensional structure of Muslim religiosity: 1. Basic religiosity, 2. Central duties, 3. Religious experience, 4. Religious knowledge, and 5. Orthopraxis. Further statistical analysis indicates that the scales are reliable and internally valid." (author's abstract
