    Transient elastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis of a novel metal-on-metal hip prosthesis with a non-spherical femoral bearing surface

    Effective lubrication performance of metal-on-metal hip implants only requires optimum conformity within the main loaded area, while it is advantageous to increase the clearance in the equatorial region. Such a varying clearance can be achieved by using non-spherical bearing surfaces for either acetabular or femoral components. An elastohydrodynamic lubrication model of a novel metal-on-metal hip prosthesis using a non-spherical femoral bearing surface against a spherical cup was solved under loading and motion conditions specified by ISO standard. A full numerical methodology of considering the geometric variation in the rotating non-spherical head in elastohydrodynamic lubrication solution was presented, which is applicable to all non-spherical head designs. The lubrication performance of a hip prosthesis using a specific non-spherical femoral head, Alpharabola, was analysed and compared with those of spherical bearing surfaces and a non-spherical Alpharabola cup investigated in previous studies. The sensitivity of the lubrication performance to the anteversion angle of the Alpharabola head was also investigated. Results showed that the non-spherical head introduced a large squeeze-film action and also led to a large variation in clearance within the loaded area. With the same equatorial clearance, the lubrication performance of the metal-on-metal hip prosthesis using an Alpharabola head was better than that of the conventional spherical bearings but worse than that of the metal-on-metal hip prosthesis using an Alpharabola cup. The reduction in the lubrication performance caused by the initial anteversion angle of the non-spherical head was small, compared with the improvement resulted from the non-spherical geometry

    Vitamin E reduces amyloidosis and improves cognitive function in Tg2576 mice following repetitive concussive brain injury

    Traumatic brain injury is a well-recognized environmental risk factor for developing Alzheimer's disease. Repetitive concussive brain injury (RCBI) exacerbates brain lipid peroxidation, accelerates amyloid (Abeta) formation and deposition, as well as cognitive impairments in Tg2576 mice. This study evaluated the effects of vitamin E on these four parameters in Tg2576 mice following RCBI. Eleven-month-old mice were randomized to receive either regular chow or chow-supplemented with vitamin E for 4 weeks, and subjected to RCBI (two injuries, 24 h apart) using a modified controlled cortical impact model of closed head injury. The same dietary regimens were maintained up to 8 weeks post-injury, when the animals were killed for biochemical and immunohistochemical analyses after behavioral evaluation. Vitamin E-treated animals showed a significant increase in brain vitamin E levels and a significant decrease in brain lipid peroxidation levels. After RBCI, compared with the group on regular chow, animals receiving vitamin E did not show the increase in Abeta peptides, and had a significant attenuation of learning deficits. This study suggests that the exacerbation of brain oxidative stress following RCBI plays a mechanistic role in accelerating Abeta accumulation and behavioral impairments in the Tg2576 mice

    ELM mitigation by supersonic molecular beam injection: KSTAR and HL-2A experiments and theory

    We report recent experimental results from HL-2A and KSTAR on ELM mitigation by supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI). Cold particle deposition within the pedestal by SMBI is verified in both machines. The signatures of ELM mitigation by SMBI are an ELM frequency increase and ELM amplitude decrease. These persist for an SMBI influence time τI. Here, τI is the time for the SMBI influenced pedestal profile to refill. An increase in fELMSMBI/fELM0 and a decrease in the energy loss per ELM ΔWELM were achieved in both machines. Physical insight was gleaned from studies of density and vΦ (toroidal rotation velocity) evolution, particle flux and turbulence spectra, divertor heat load. The characteristic gradients of the pedestal density soften and a change in vΦ was observed during a τI time. The spectra of the edge particle flux Γ ∼ 〈ṽrñe〉 and density fluctuation with and without SMBI were measured in HL-2A and in KSTAR, respectively. A clear phenomenon observed is the decrease in divertor heat load during the τI time in HL-2A. Similar results are the profiles of saturation current density Jsat with and without SMBI in KSTAR. We note that τI/τp (particle confinement time) is close to ∼1, although there is a large difference in individual τI between the two machines. This suggests that τI is strongly related to particle-transport events. Experiments and analysis of a simple phenomenological model support the important conclusion that ELM mitigation by SMBI results from an increase in higher frequency fluctuations and transport events in the pedestal. © 2014 IAEA, Vienna

    The initial dental health status of British army Gurkha recruits

    AIM: To describe the initial dental health status of British Army Gurkhas who were recruited in 1999 and to compare the present caries data with previous unpublished data from before 1970 and 1983.<p></p> DESIGN AND SETTING: A clinical examination was conducted on the 228 Gurkhas, the entire UK intake for 1999, during their second week of military training. The focus of the examinations was on caries experience. A questionnaire was employed to collect demographic data as well as information on the recruits' reported dental behaviour and beliefs.<p></p> RESULTS: 1999 recruits who reported a dental problem within the past year were significantly more likely to have visited a dentist before compared to those recruits who reported no dental problems. The frequency distributions of D3MFT for the 1983 and 1999 recruits were very similar.<p></p> CONCLUSIONS: Gurkha men are at relatively low risk of dental caries and predicted treatment time suggests a relatively small use of resources would be needed to make this group dentally fit. These recruits are an extremely homogeneous group who remain discernible from the general Nepalese population.<p></p&gt
