Experiments with firefly algorithm
Firefly Algorithm (FA) is one of the recent swarm intelligence methods developed by Xin-She Yang in 2008 [12]. FA is a stochastic, nature-inspired, meta- heuristic algorithm that can be applied for solving the hardest optimization problems. The main goal of this paper is to analyze the influence of changing some parameters of the FA when solving bound constrained optimization problems. One of the most important aspects of this algorithm is how far is the distance between the points and the way they are drawn to the optimal solution. In this work, we aim to analyze other ways of calculating the distance between the points and also other functions to com- pute the attractiveness of fireflies. To show the performance of the proposed modified FAs a set of 30 benchmark global optimization test problems are used. Preliminary experiments reveal that the obtained results are competitive when comparing with the original FA version.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT
Theory of the tunneling resonances of the bilayer electron systems in strong magnetic field
We develop a theory for the anomalous interlayer conductance peaks observed
in bilayer electron systems at nu=1. Our model shows the that the size of the
peak at zero bias decreases rapidly with increasing in-plane magnetic field,
but its location is unchanged. The I-V characteristic is linear at small
voltages, in agreement with experimental observations. In addition we make
quantitative predictions for how the inter-layer conductance peaks vary in
position with in-plane magnetic field at high voltages. Finally, we predict
novel bi-stable behavior at intermediate voltages.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Modeliranje, upravljanje i eksperimentalno istraživanje novoga raspodijeljenog statičkog kompenzatora jalove snage zasnovanog na višestupanjskom pretvaraču s ulančenim H-mostovima
A novel static synchronous compensator for reactive power compensation of distribution system (DSTATCOM) is proposed, based on the cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter configuration. The mathematical formulation of the multilevel DSTATCOM is presented using state-space representations. A new software phase-locked loop (SPLL) is presented for grid synchronization and the obtained phase angle of the fundamental component of the grid voltage is utilized for deriving the active and reactive power balancing equations of the multilevel DSTATCOM. The proportional-resonant (PR) controller scheme is adopted for the current tracking control of the inverter, and the average dc-link voltage is controlled using a proportional-integral (PI) controller to regulate the active power flow of the DSTATCOM. Besides, the voltage balancing (VB) control among individual H-bridges is achieved by using separate PI regulators to control the difference voltage between the individual dc-link voltage and the average dc-link voltage. The validity of the proposed multilevel DSTATCOM and its control strategies is substantially confirmed by the extensive simulation results and the experimental results from the prototype system.
Absence of a dose-rate effect in the transformation of C3H 10T1/2 cells by α-particles
The findings of Hill et al. (1984) on the greatly enhanced transformation frequencies at very low dose rates of fission neutrons induced us to perform an analogous study with -particles at comparable dose rates. Transformation frequencies were determined with γ-rays at high dose rate (0·5 Gy/min), and with -particles at high (0·2 Gy/min) and at low dose rates (0·83-2·5 mGy/min) in the C3H 10T1/2 cell system.
α-particles were substantially more effective than γ-rays, both for cell inactivation and for neoplastic transformation at high and low dose rates. The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for cell inactivation and for neoplastic transformation was of similar magnitude, and ranged from about 3 at an -particle dose of 2 Gy to values of the order of 10 at 0·25 Gy. In contrast to the experiments of Hill et al. (1984) with fission neutrons, no increased transformation frequencies were observed when the -particle dose was protracted over several hours

Solitons in polarized double layer quantum Hall systems
A new manifestation of interlayer coherence in strongly polarized double
layer quantum Hall systems with total filling factor
in the presence of a small or zero tunneling is theoretically
predicted. It is shown that moving (for small tunneling) and spatially
localized (for zero tunneling) stable pseudospin solitons develop which could
be interpreted as mobile or static charge-density excitations.
The possibility of their experimental observation is also discussed.Comment: Phys. Rev. B (accepted
Bias-voltage induced phase-transition in bilayer quantum Hall ferromagnets
We consider bilayer quantum Hall systems at total filling factor in
presence of a bias voltage which leads to different filling factors
in each layer. We use auxiliary field functional integral approach to study
mean-field solutions and collective excitations around them. We find that at
large layer separation, the collective excitations soften at a finite wave
vector leading to the collapse of quasiparticle gap. Our calculations predict
that as the bias voltage is increased, bilayer systems undergo a phase
transition from a compressible state to a phase-coherent state {\it
with charge imbalance}. We present simple analytical expressions for
bias-dependent renormalized charge imbalance and pseudospin stiffness which are
sensitive to the softening of collective modes.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures. Minor changes, one reference adde
Quantifying the levitation picture of extended states in lattice models
The behavior of extended states is quantitatively analyzed for two
dimensional lattice models. A levitation picture is established for both
white-noise and correlated disorder potentials. In a continuum limit window of
the lattice models we find simple quantitative expressions for the extended
states levitation, suggesting an underlying universal behavior. On the other
hand, these results point out that the Quantum Hall phase diagrams may be
disorder dependent.Comment: 5 pages, submitted to PR
Coulomb Correlations and Magnetic Anisotropy in ordered CoPt and FePt alloys
We present results of the magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MAE)
calculations for chemically ordered CoPt and FePt alloys taking into
account the effects of strong electronic correlations and spin-orbit coupling.
The local spin density + Hubbard U approximation (LSDA+U) is shown to provide a
consistent picture of the magnetic ground state properties when intra-atomic
Coulomb correlations are included for both 3 and 5 elements. Our results
demonstrate significant and complex contribution of correlation effects to
large MAE of these material.Comment: revised version; 4 pages, 2 figure
