High-Field Quasiparticle Tunneling in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+delta: Negative Magnetoresistance in the Superconducting State
We report on the c-axis resistivity rho_c(H) in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}
that peaks in quasi-static magnetic fields up to 60 T. By suppressing the
Josephson part of the two-channel (Cooper pair/quasiparticle) conductivity
\sigma_c (H), we find that the negative slope of \rho_c(H) above the peak is
due to quasiparticle tunneling conductivity \sigma_q(H) across the CuO_2 layers
below H_{c2}. At high fields (a) \sigma_q(H) grows linearly with H, and (b)
\rho_c(T) tends to saturate (sigma_c \neq 0) as T->0, consistent with the
scattering at the nodes of the d-gap. A superlinear sigma_q(H) marks the normal

Structure of Kα1,2 - And Kβ1,3 -emission x-ray spectra for Se, Y, and Zr

Grant No. 2017/25/B/ST2/00901The Kα and Kβ x-ray spectra of Se, Y, and Zr were studied experimentally and theoretically in order to obtain information on the Kα1 line asymmetry and the spin doublet in Kβ1,3 diagram lines. Using a high-resolution antiparallel double-crystal x-ray spectrometer, we obtained the line shapes, that is, asymmetry index and natural linewidths. We found that the corrected full width at half maximum of the Kα1 and Kα2 lines as a function of Z is in good agreement with the data in the literature. Furthermore, satellite lines arising from shake-off appear in the low-energy side of the Kα1 and Kα2 lines in Se but, in Y and Zr, it was very difficult to identify the contribution of the shake process to the overall lines. The Kβ1,3 natural linewidth of these elements was also corrected using the appropriate instrumental function for this type of x-ray spectrometer, and the spin doublet energies were obtained from the peak positions. The corrected full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the Kβ1 x-ray lines increases linearly with Z, but this tendency was found to be, in general, not linear for Kβ3 x-ray lines. This behavior may be due to the existence of satellite lines originated from shake processes. Simulated line profiles, obtained using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock formalism, accounting for radiative and radiationless transitions and shake-off processes, show a very good agreement with the high-resolution experimental spectra.publishersversionpublishe
Flux-Induced Vortex in Mesoscopic Superconducting Loops
We predict the existence of a quantum vortex for an unusual situation. We
study the order parameter in doubly connected superconducting samples embedded
in a uniform magnetic field. For samples with perfect cylindrical symmetry, the
order parameter has been known for long and no vortices are present in the
linear regime. However, if the sample is not symmetric, there exist ranges of
the field for which the order parameter vanishes along a line, parallel to the
field. In many respects, the behavior of this line is qualitatively different
from that of the vortices encountered in type II superconductivity. For samples
with mirror symmetry, this flux-induced vortex appears at the thin side for
small fluxes and at the opposite side for large fluxes. We propose direct and

Elevated expression of polymorphonuclear leukocyte elastase in breast cancer tissue is associated with tamoxifen failure in patients with advanced disease
Besides a variety of other proteases, polymorphonuclear leukocyte elastase (PMN-E) is also suggested to play a role in the processes of tumour cell invasion and metastasis. Yet, there is only limited data available on the relation between the tumour level of PMN-E and prognosis in patients with primary breast cancer, and no published information exists on its relation with the efficacy of response to systemic therapy in patients with advanced breast cancer. In the present study, we have measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay the levels of total PMN-E in cytosolic extracts of 463 primary breast tumours, and have correlated their levels with the rate and duration of response on first-line tamoxifen therapy (387 patients) or chemotherapy (76 patients) in patients with locally advanced and/or distant metastatic breast cancer. Furthermore, the probabilities of progression-free survival and postrelapse survival were studied in relation to the tumour levels of PMN-E. Our results show that in logistic regression analysis for response to tamoxifen treatment in patients with advanced disease, high PMN-E tumour levels were associated with a poor rate of response compared with those with low PMN-E levels (odds ratio: OR, 0.40; 95% CI, 0.22-0.73; P = 0.003). After correction for the contribution of the traditional predictive factors in multivariate analysis, the tumour PMN-E status was an independent predictor of response (P = 0.01). Furthermore, a high tumour PMN-E level was related with a poor progression-free survival (P<0.001) and postrelapse survival (P = 0.002) in a time-dependent analysis. In contrast, the tumour level of PMN-E was not significantly related with the efficacy of response to first-line chemotherapy in patients with advanced breast cancer. Our present results suggest that PMN-E is an independent predictive marker for the efficacy of tamoxifen treatment in patients with advanced breast cancer
Improved Measurements of Partial Rate Asymmetry in B -> h h Decays
We report improved measurements of the partial rate asymmetry (Acp) in B -> h
h decays with 140fb^-1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB
e+e- collider. Here h stands for a charged or neutral pion or kaon and in total
five decay modes are included: K-+ pi+-, K0s pi-+, K-+ pi0, pi-+ pi0 and K0s
pi0. The flavor of the last decay mode is determined from the accompanying B
meson. Using a data sample 4.7 times larger than that of our previous
measurement, we find Acp(K-+ pi+-) -0.088+-0.035+-0.013, 2.4 sigma from zero.

Study of the decays B->D_s1(2536)+ anti-D(*)
We report a study of the decays B -> D_s1(2536)+ anti-D(*), where anti-D(*)
is anti-D0, D- or D*-, using a sample of 657 x 10^6 B anti-B pairs collected at
the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy
e+e- collider. The branching fractions of the decays B+ -> D_s1(2536)+ anti-D0,
B0 -> D_s1(2536)+ D- and B0 -> D_s1(2536)+ D*- multiplied by that of
D_s1(2536)+ -> (D*0K+ + D*+K0) are found to be (3.97+-0.85+-0.56) x 10^-4,

Evidence for B- -> tau- nu_bar with a Semileptonic Tagging Method
We present a measurement of the decay B- -> tau- nu_bar using a data sample
containing 657 million BB_bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with
the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. A sample of
BB_bar pairs are tagged by reconstructing one B meson decaying
semileptonically. We detect the B- -> tau- nu_bar candidate in the recoil. We
obtain a signal with a significance of 3.6 standard deviations including
systematic uncertainties, and measure the branching fraction to be Br(B- ->
tau- nu_bar) = [1.54+0.38-0.37(stat)+0.29-0.31(syst)]*10^-4. This result
confirms the evidence for B- -> tau- nu_bar obtained in a previous Belle

Search for CP violation in the decay B0->D*+-D-+
We report a search for CP-violating asymmetry in B0 -> D*+- D-+ decays. The
analysis employs two methods of B0 reconstruction: full and partial. In the
full reconstruction method all daughter particles of the B0 are required to be
detected; the partial reconstruction technique requires a fully reconstructed
D- and only a slow pion from the D*+ -> D0 pi_slow+ decay. From a fit to the
distribution of the time interval corresponding to the distance between two B
meson decay points we calculate the CP-violating parameters and find the
significance of nonzero CP asymmetry to be 2.7 standard deviations.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
