    Domain-wall resistance in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As

A series of microstructures designed to pin domain-walls (DWs) in (Ga,Mn)As with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy has been employed to determine extrinsic and intrinsic contributions to DW resistance. The former is explained quantitatively as resulting from a polarity change in the Hall electric field at DW. The latter is one order of magnitude greater than a term brought about by anisotropic magnetoresistance and is shown to be consistent with disorder-induced misstracing of the carrier spins subject to spatially varying magnetization

GHz Range SAW Transducers Using Electron Beam Lithography

    Get PDF
Nanometer electrodes of the order of 0.085 μm width have been fabricated using direct electron beam lithography, normal lift-off techniques and 0₂-plasma cleaning system. These techniques have been applied to Inter-Digital Transducers (IDТ) as surface acoustic wave (SAW) transducers in the GHz-range. We performed SAW filter experiments at GHz-range. Filters with minimum insertion loss of 16.0 dB at the center frequency of 5 GHz and 27 dB at 11 GHz were obtained.Zadanie pt. More on the Isomorphism SU(2)SU(2)SO(4)SU(2)\otimes SU(2)\cong SO(4)

In this paper we revisit the isomorphism SU(2)SU(2)SO(4)SU(2)\otimes SU(2)\cong SO(4) to apply to some subjects in Quantum Computation and Mathematical Physics. The unitary matrix QQ by Makhlin giving the isomorphism as an adjoint action is studied and generalized from a different point of view. Some problems are also presented. In particular, the homogeneous manifold SU(2n)/SO(2n)SU(2n)/SO(2n) which characterizes entanglements in the case of n=2n=2 is studied, and a clear-cut calculation of the universal Yang-Mills action in (hep-th/0602204) is given for the abelian case.Comment: Latex ; 19 pages ; 5 figures ; minor changes. Japanese ancestors, non-Japanese family, and community: Ethnic identification of Japanese descendants in Broome, Western Australia

    Get PDF
This paper explores the ethnic identity formation of the descendants of Japanese migrants in Broome, Western Australia. From the 1880s to the 1960s, Broome had an influx of Japanese migrants seeking work in its pearl shell industry and related businesses; one of the longest continuous Japanese migrations to Australia. Although the history of Japanese migration and mixing with the locals of Broome has been researched, and descendant experiences of being ‘mixed’ been portrayed in music and the performing arts, the internal dynamics of their ‘mixedness’ has not been investigated. This paper addresses the diversity of Japanese descendant identity by focusing on the complex transmission of their Japanese identity. Case studies reveal that their sense of being a Japanese descendant is transmitted and supported not only by their Japanese ancestors and the local Japanese community, but also by non-Japanese family members and the larger Broome community, operating in the background of Broome’s rich history as part of Australia’s “polyethnic north.

Concomitant therapy with pioglitazone and insulin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes

    Get PDF
To prevent hyperinsulinemia, which may cause atherosclerosis, thiazolidinediones (TZDs), also known as insulin sensitizers, are often added to the therapeutic regimen of patients with type 2 diabetes who are receiving insulin. The combination of insulin with pioglitazone, a TZD, reduces glycoated hemoglobin (HbA1c) by 0.6%–2.1%. The higher the HbA1c baseline the larger the therapeutic reduction of HbA1c. This combination therapy has been shown to be beneficial even in lean Japanese patients with diabetes. It should be noted that such combination therapy is much more useful when the main clinical aim is lowering not postprandial, but fasting and nocturnal glycemia. The glycemic-lowering effects of pioglitazone alone occur slowly, whereas the addition of insulin to pioglitazone often shows a dramatic glucose-lowering effect. Thus, such combination therapy increases the possibility of frequent hypoglycemia within 1 to 2 months of combining the drugs. Severe hypoglycemia in patients using this therapy is rare. Patients treated with combination therapy who show a predominant reduction of glycemia often have severe edema; in 10%–20% of patients, combination therapy leads to drug-related congestive heart failure (CHF). However, this phenomenon is usually weakened if low doses of pioglitazone which are added to insulin therapy (ie, 15 mg/day or even 7.5 mg/day for women). It is well known that pioglitazone has an anti-atherosclerotic effect, although it is unclear if hyperinsulinemia induces atherogenic changes, either directly or indirectly, by the promotion of obesity. Until now, we have not confirmed whether the anti-atherosclerotic effects of pioglitazone exceed the supposed disadvantageous action of insulin when used in combination therapy. The addition of pioglitazone tends to reduce daily insulin dosages, but study findings have not been consistent. Improvement of lipid profiles has also been weak with this combination therapy. Long-term trials are needed before any conclusions can be reached concerning atherogenic effects of treatment for type 2 diabetes. Combination therapy of even small doses of pioglitazone with insulin should be primarily used for patients who achieve insufficient reduction in glycemia with insulin monotherapy
