Modelling Electron Spin Accumulation in a Metallic Nanoparticle

A model describing spin-polarized current via discrete energy levels of a metallic nanoparticle, which has strongly asymmetric tunnel contacts to two ferromagnetic leads, is presented. In absence of spin-relaxation, the model leads to a spin-accumulation in the nanoparticle, a difference (Δμ\Delta\mu) between the chemical potentials of spin-up and spin-down electrons, proportional to the current and the Julliere's tunnel magnetoresistance. Taking into account an energy dependent spin-relaxation rate Ω(ω)\Omega (\omega), Δμ\Delta\mu as a function of bias voltage (VV) exhibits a crossover from linear to a much weaker dependence, when eΩ(Δμ)|e|\Omega (\Delta\mu) equals the spin-polarized current through the nanoparticle. Assuming that the spin-relaxation takes place via electron-phonon emission and Elliot-Yafet mechanism, the model leads to a crossover from linear to V1/5V^{1/5} dependence. The crossover explains recent measurements of the saturation of the spin-polarized current with VV in Aluminum nanoparticles, and leads to the spin-relaxation rate of 1.6MHz\approx 1.6 MHz in an Aluminum nanoparticle of diameter 6nm6nm, for a transition with an energy difference of one level spacing.Comment: 37 pages, 7 figure

Lax Operator for the Quantised Orthosymplectic Superalgebra U_q[osp(2|n)]

Each quantum superalgebra is a quasi-triangular Hopf superalgebra, so contains a \textit{universal RR-matrix} in the tensor product algebra which satisfies the Yang-Baxter equation. Applying the vector representation π\pi, which acts on the vector module VV, to one side of a universal RR-matrix gives a Lax operator. In this paper a Lax operator is constructed for the CC-type quantum superalgebras Uq[osp(2n)]U_q[osp(2|n)]. This can in turn be used to find a solution to the Yang-Baxter equation acting on VVWV \otimes V \otimes W where WW is an arbitrary Uq[osp(2n)]U_q[osp(2|n)] module. The case W=VW=V is included here as an example.Comment: 15 page

Water vapor radiometry research and development phase

    Get PDF
This report describes the research and development phase for eight dual-channel water vapor radiometers constructed for the Crustal Dynamics Project at the Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland, and for the NASA Deep Space Network. These instruments were developed to demonstrate that the variable path delay imposed on microwave radio transmissions by atmospheric water vapor can be calibrated, particularly as this phenomenon affects very long baseline interferometry measurement systems. Water vapor radiometry technology can also be used in systems that involve moist air meteorology and propagation studies

Class A scavenger receptor 1 (MSR1) restricts hepatitis C virus replication by mediating toll-like receptor 3 recognition of viral RNAs produced in neighboring cells

Persistent infections with hepatitis C virus (HCV) may result in life-threatening liver disease, including cirrhosis and cancer, and impose an important burden on human health. Understanding how the virus is capable of achieving persistence in the majority of those infected is thus an important goal. Although HCV has evolved multiple mechanisms to disrupt and block cellular signaling pathways involved in the induction of interferon (IFN) responses, IFN-stimulated gene (ISG) expression is typically prominent in the HCV-infected liver. Here, we show that Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) expressed within uninfected hepatocytes is capable of sensing infection in adjacent cells, initiating a local antiviral response that partially restricts HCV replication. We demonstrate that this is dependent upon the expression of class A scavenger receptor type 1 (MSR1). MSR1 binds extracellular dsRNA, mediating its endocytosis and transport toward the endosome where it is engaged by TLR3, thereby triggering IFN responses in both infected and uninfected cells. RNAi-mediated knockdown of MSR1 expression blocks TLR3 sensing of HCV in infected hepatocyte cultures, leading to increased cellular permissiveness to virus infection. Exogenous expression of Myc-MSR1 restores TLR3 signaling in MSR1-depleted cells with subsequent induction of an antiviral state. A series of conserved basic residues within the carboxy-terminus of the collagen superfamily domain of MSR1 are required for binding and transport of dsRNA, and likely facilitate acidification-dependent release of dsRNA at the site of TLR3 expression in the endosome. Our findings reveal MSR1 to be a critical component of a TLR3-mediated pattern recognition receptor response that exerts an antiviral state in both infected and uninfected hepatocytes, thereby limiting the impact of HCV proteins that disrupt IFN signaling in infected cells and restricting the spread of HCV within the liver

Spin accumulation created electrically in an n-type germanium channel using Schottky tunnel contacts

Using high-quality Fe3_{3}Si/n+n^{+}-Ge Schottky-tunnel-barrier contacts, we study spin accumulation in an nn-type germanium (nn-Ge) channel. In the three- or two-terminal voltage measurements with low bias current conditions at 50 K, Hanle-effect signals are clearly detected only at a forward-biased contact. These are reliable evidence for electrical detection of the spin accumulation created in the nn-Ge channel. The estimated spin lifetime in nn-Ge at 50 K is one order of magnitude shorter than those in nn-Si reported recently. The magnitude of the spin signals cannot be explained by the commonly used spin diffusion model. We discuss a possible origin of the difference between experimental data and theoretical values.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, To appear in J. Appl. Phy

Unveiling Consonant Harmony: Nonlexical reduplication in English

    Get PDF
There is a lack of strong diachronic evidence in English phonology to demonstrate consonant harmony (hereafter CH) in reduplication (Fikkert et al. 2005; Goad & Buckley 2006; Hale & Reiss 2008; Pater & Werle 2003; Rose 2000; Wolfram & Johnson 1982). In the present study, we investigated CH in synchronic settings wherein native English speakers were asked to produce a euphonious pseudo reduplicant from a nonce base in uncontrolled and controlled experiments. The results of the experiments indicated that, in English, consonantal assimilations might have a hierarchical structure when CH is present in the synchronic formation of a rhyming reduplicant. Taken holistically, these findings suggest that the rate of coronal assimilation exceeds that of labial assimilation. The occurrence of dorsal assimilation may be restricted even further by the scarcity of word-initial dorsal onsets that meet the requirements for rhyming reduplication

Absorption-free optical control of spin systems:the quantum Zeno effect in optical pumping

    Get PDF
We show that atomic spin motion can be controlled by circularly polarized light without light absorption in the strong pumping limit. In this limit, the pumping light, which drives the empty spin state, destroys the Zeeman coherence effectively and freezes the coherent transition via the quantum Zeno effect. It is verified experimentally that the amount of light absorption decreases asymptotically to zero as the incident light intensity is increased.Comment: 4 pages with 4 figure

    The table mountain 8-mm-wavelength interferometer

    Get PDF
The system components, performance, and calibration of two element radio interferometer operating at 8.33 mm wavelength are discussed. The interferometer employs a 5.5 m and a 3 m diameter antenna on an east-west baseline of 60 or 120 m, yielding fringe spacings at transit of 28 or 14 in. respectively. The broad intermediate frequency bandpass of 100 to 350 MHz and the system noise temperature of 500 K provide high sensitivity for the measurement of continuum sources. The interferometer has been used for high resolution studies of the planets and the Sun, and it is currently being adapted to study solar flare emissions at high spatial and time resolution
