Enantioselective Protonation of Ketene Bis(trimethylsilyl) Acetals Derived from α-Aryl-α-haloacetic Acids Using LBA

Optically active α-halocarboxylic acids and derivatives are important and versatile building blocks in organic synthesis. Lewis acid assisted chiral Brönsted acid (LBA) was recently prepared in situ from tin(IV) tetrachloride and optically pure binaphthol and shown to be an effective reagent for enantioselective protonation of pro- chiral silyl enol ethers and ketene bis(trialkylsilyl) acetals. In this paper we describe highly enantioselective protonation of ketene bis(trimethylsilyl) acetals prepared from α-aryl-α-haloaeetic acids using LBA. This is a new methodology for the enantioselective synthesis of α-aryl-α-haloacetic acid derivatives, and the commercially available chiral binaphthol can be recovered efficiently for reuse

Far-infrared rays control prostate cancer cells _in vitro_ and _in vivo_

We introduce a new effective method to control hormone refractory prostate cancer cells by using an activated rubber/resin form (RB), far-infrared ray emitter, with or without sodium butyrate (SB). The growth of three human prostate cancer cell lines (Du145, PC-3 and LNCaP) was suppressed _in vitro_ and _in vivo_ by using RB, and the cells were eradicated with RB + 3 mM SB. G1 arrest and apoptotic pathway proteins were induced by RB with intensified expressions of apoptosis - related mRNA on cDNA microarray. RB radiates the infra-red rays of the 4 to 25 [mu]m wavelengths to an object which exert a favorable influence on a cancer control. These results may render us a new therapeutic modality in hormone refractory prostate cancer

Nucleation process in the Burridge-Knopoff model of earthquakes

Nucleation process of the one-dimensional Burridge-Knopoff model of earthquakes obeying the rate- and state-dependent friction law is studied both analytically and numerically. The properties of the nucleation dynamics, the nucleation lengths and the duration times are examined together with their continuum limits.Comment: Title changed, one figure (previous Fig.2) omitted, several references (new Refs.5-8,21,24-28) added, and two eqs. (new eqs.1,5) added. Text expanded considerably, especially the part explaining the relation of the model to the elastic continuum model. To appear in Europhys. Letter

Intraoral Vertical Ramus Osteotomy Improved the Stomatognathic Function in an Elderly Patient with Mandibular Protrusion:A Case Report

This article reports the successful surgical-orthodontic treatment of an elderly patient with dentofacial deformity and signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). The patient was a 63-year-old woman with a concave profile due to mandibular protrusion. To correct skeletal deformities, the mandible was posteriorly repositioned by employing intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) following presurgical orthodontic treatment. After active treatment for 31 months, the facial profile was significantly improved and satisfactory occlusion was achieved. In addition, TMD symptoms of clicking sounds on the left side and difficulty in mouth opening were resolved. Regarding the findings of magnetic resonance imaging, anterior disc displacement in the opening phase was improved in the temporomandibular joint on the left side. Furthermore, stomatognathic functions were also improved without any aggravation of age-related problems. In conclusion, surgical repositioning of the mandible using IVRO leads to both morphological and functional improvements even in elderly patients
