    Trophic interactions of two Ponto-Caspian gobies in the Turkish part of their native range

    Several Ponto-Caspian gobiids have expanded from their native distribution ranges to Europe and North America. As knowledge on their bio-ecological features in their native range is still limited, the trophic ecology of monkey goby Neogobius fluviatilis and Western tubenose goby Proterorhinus semilunaris was studied in three natural lakes in the Marmara Region of NW Turkey using the stable isotopes of δ13C and δ15N. In two of the lakes, the trophic niches (as the isotopic niche) of the gobies were highly divergent with co-existing native fishes, with no overlap. Moreover, mixing models suggests considerable inter-specific dietary differences. In all lakes, the trophic niches of gobies were never significantly larger than those of co-existing fishes. These results suggest that when introduced outside of their natural range, the gobies might integrate into new fish communities via exploiting resources that are underexploited by native fishes or will initially share resources with these species before their niches diverge, perhaps through competitive displacement

    Lagoons and estuaries are transitional waters (TW), saline in character but substantially influenced by freshwater (FW) flows and the most productive habitat after upwelling areas. The European eel, Anguilla anguilla, is a typical inhabitant of these habitats and a target of important lagoon fisheries since ancient times. Notwithstanding this, in the Mediterranean region, where the numerous coastal lagoons are the most eligible habitat for this species, eel habitat use and growth, which display a high inter-individual variability, are poorly studied. To gain knowledge about the migratory behaviour and the relative growth history of this species in TW in the Mediterranean area, the otolith Sr/Ca ratios of 56 individuals were analysed. The study sampling sites were two typical coastal lagoon environments, Caprolace lagoon and Lesina lagoon, located, respectively on the Tyrrhenian and the Adriatic coast of Italy, and the Tiber River (TR) estuary, in Central Italy. Otolith Sr/Ca profiles revealed that in all the sites, the resident contingent is substantial, while the proportion of nomad eels, or habitat inter-shifter, was different among sites. Mean annual grow rate of resident eels is higher in productive environments (TR and lagoon of Lesina), while in Caprolace lagoon, an oligotrophic lagoon, resident eels grow slower. The observed patterns of habitat use and growth seem linked to local ecological conditions: facultative movements of eels with a nomadic behaviour seem affected by food availability rather than by the salinity gradient. This consideration supports the hypothesis that the facultative catadromous migration of European eel in Mediterranean TW, and the trophic shifts that this species exhibits, depend primarily on the productivity of the environment rather than on its salinity gradient

    European eels (Anguilla anguilla L.) has a great dispersion from Sargasso Sea to across the Europe and North Africa. Their population have decreased dramatically over the years and listed in IUCN as critically endangered. Stock estimation is one of the important issues in order to sustainable management of this species. Last decades, researchers have focused various studies which based on monitoring of various life stages of eels. Manual counting methods with ladder traps is commonly used based on collection of glass and elver stages of eels from the natural habitats while their migration to upward of streams. During their special migration pattern, a counting device on the eel ladders can be designed so that the eels may be counted while passing through this device. The offered prototype was designed for eel ladders which was briefly, powered by an open-source electronics platform, Light Dependent Resistor (LDR) and 650 nm Laser light were used to count elver eels. Several trials were conducted to test this prototype and results were promising. This study aimed to explain features of prototype and working principle of elver counter. Designed prototype has several advantages such as usable with eel ladders, easy to customisation and affordable characteristics. However, this device needs some improvements in order to effective usages in the field

    Ontogenetic Diet Shift of Invasive Gibel Carp (Carassius gibelio, Bloch 1782) in Karamenderes River (Turkey)

    The ontogenetic diet shift of invasive Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782) was investigated in Karamenderes River, Turkey. The fieldwork was performed during summer 2012, autumn 2012 and spring 2013. The fishes were caught by electrofishing and using gill nets. Nine fork length groups were used in order to assess the ontogenetic diet shift. The gut contents were assessed by the index of relative importance that was calculated from the frequency of occurrence, numerical abundance, and volumetric analyses. The most abundant length groups of C. gibelio were 18-20 cm, 6-8 cm, and 27-29 cm length groups during summer 2012, autumn 2012 and spring 2013, respectively. The feeding intensity was the lowest in the length groups of 15-17 cm during summer 2012, in 3-5 cm length group in autumn 2012 and in 24-26 cm length group in spring. Seasonal variations were observed in the ontogenetic diet shift of C. gibelio. Large specimens consumed more animal materials during summer and more algae in autumn. There was not any significant niche overlap recorded between small and large specimens except summer. Any niche overlap between small and large specimens might be advantageous for the establishment success of invasive Gibel carp in Karamenderes River

    An invasive species, Carassius gibelio, alters the native fish community through trophic niche competition

    Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analyses were used to determine isotopic niche width of the invasive fish species Carassius gibelio to help assess the niche overlap and potential impact of this species on the native fish fauna in the Karamenderes River, northwest Turkey. C. gibelio had the highest niche area of the coexisting species. The greatest overlap of isotopic niche was between C. gibelio and Mugil cephalus in the river mouth. The freshwater species displayed similar patterns when taking into consideration their relative abundance and isotopic overlap. While C. gibelio is likely to outcompete some species at some localities, the species was found co-occurring with others by maximum tolerable overlap degree and apparently utilised vacant niche space at some stations. Overall our results indicate that C. gibelio has extensive niche overlap with the native fish species making it a strong competitor, and because of its high abundance and high niche width this invasive species represents a serious threat to the native fish fauna, particularly in the river mouth.peerReviewe
