In this study, it is aimed to determine the effects of different transporting methods and waiting period on olive. In the study, olive (memecik cultivar) as main material, which is planted widely in Aydın location, was used. The harvested olives were divided into two groups by filling to boxes with 15 cm, 30 cm and 45 cm heights as well as nylon sacks. First and second groups were transported by one axle and two axle-trailers respectively on the stabilized ways. While a part of transported materials was investigated without waiting (directly), the other part was studied after waiting for 7, 14 and 21 days in terms of moisture, shape index, hectoliter weight, friction coefficient of friction and percent of oleic acid values. In conclusion, it was observed that the boxes, sacks and the waiting period were significantly important on investigated parameters. However, there was no statistical difference in comparison of the transportation with one-axle and two-axle trailers.

How do Turkish people use the media content of the health issues?

    Get PDF
In recent years it has been obviously observed that there has been a huge increase in health news in Turkey. In addition to this increase it’s also observed that there has been an obvious raise in critics about this kind of news. It is also possible to say that academic researches on health publications have limited extent or they are independent from each other in the scope of subject. In this respect, today’s health publications in Turkey are required to have some specific features. According to this, publication content should be examined, and publics’ opinions and perceptions should be determined. In other words, there is a need for increasing social consciousness by determining main principles of health publication. In this regard, the project named “Designation of the Principles on Health Content of the Media in Turkey: An Analysis on Source, Message, and Audience” has been conducted to reveal main principles of health publications and to increase public’s consciousness by describing health publication in today’s Turkey, examining media content and determining public’s perceptions and considerations on these publications. As a part of the project, this paper covers the results of the national survey on the health content of Turkish media. The paper aims to show how people use and how they evaluate the media content on health issues in Turkey. Results show that Turkish people mostly prefer to get information from medical doctors rather than the media. But on the other hand, even though if it’s not the majority, Turkish people implement treatments, visit doctors, hospitals and buy health products that they see on the media. This paper was supported by TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) with the project number 109 K 534, and Anadolu University Scientific Research Projects Commission (SRPC) with the project number 1000 E 38

The nutritional value of non-traditional gluten-free flakes and their antioxidant activity

Nowadays, there is a growing interest for foods with a lower sugar content and rich in fiber and biologically active substances. The main purpose of this study was to prepare flakes from non-traditional pigmented cereals (Oryza sativa, Chenopodium quinoa, and Eragrostis tef ) and to analyze their fibre, sugar, and in vitro digestibility values. Regarding phenolic antioxidants (soluble, soluble conjugated, and insoluble bound fractions), their content and antioxidant activity were measured using spectrophotometry and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods. Hydrothermally treated grains resulted in flakes with higher total dietary fibre contents (11.1–24.4%), quinoa and teff flakes were rich in maltose (up to 42.0 mg/g). Non-traditional flakes had lower in vitro digestibility, but conversely, they exhibited the highest phenolic contents corresponding with the highest antioxidant activity values (up to 2.33 mg Gallic acid equivalent/g of total phenolic content and 1.59 mg Trolox equivalent/g for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) in case of brown teff). Among free phenolics, the main contributors to an antioxidant activity were p-coumaric, o-coumaric, and gallic acids (r > 0.8186); among the soluble conjugated fractions, they were epigallocatechin, epicatechin, caffeic, and vanillic acids (r > 0.5935); while caffeic, protocatechuic, and ferulic acids (r > 0.5751) were the main contributors among the insoluble bound phenolics. © 2019 by the authors. Three-axis gap clearance I-PD controller design based on coefficient diagram method for 4-pole hybrid electromagnet

    Get PDF
4-pole hybrid electromagnetic systems have a potential usage in many industrial areas, such as clean room design, transportation, semi-conductor manufacturing due to providing mechanical contact-free operation with considerably low energy consumption. However, the main problem of magnetic levitation process: it has highly nonlinear nature and even if it can be linearized, it has unstable pole(s), which makes the system vulnerable in terms of stability. In this paper, to overcome the instability issue and track the desired references for each degree of freedom, a modified PID controller (so called I-PD) design technique based on coefficient diagram method (CDM) has been proposed. CDM is an algebraic design applied to polynomial structure of the system on the parameter space, where a specific diagram is used to present and interpret the essential data. It is quite simple to apply with a visual support, requires basic mathematical computations for field engineers, and offers a good equilibrium in terms of simplicity, stability, minimum overshoot and robustness, which are crucial specifications for maglev applications. The effectiveness and feasibility of CDM-based I-PD controller have been compared with CDMbased classical PID controller over an experimental set-up

Background: Predictor factors determining complete response to treatment are still not clearly defined. We aimed to evaluate clinicopathological features, risk factors, treatment responses, and survival analysis of patient with advanced nonseminomatous GCTs (NSGCTs). Materials and Methods: Between November 1999 and September 2011, 140 patients with stage II and III NSGCTs were referred to our institutions and 125 patients with complete clinical data were included in this retrospective study. Four cycles of BEP regimen were applied as a first-line treatment. Salvage chemotherapy and/or high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) with autologous stem cell transplantation were given in patients who progressed after BEP chemotherapy. Post-chemotherapy surgery was performed in selected patients with incomplete radiographic response and normal tumor markers. Results: The median age was 28 years. For the good, intermediate and poor risk groups, compete response rates (CRR) were, 84.6%, 67.9% and 59.4%, respectively. Extragonadal tumors, stage 3 disease, intermediate and poor risk factors, rete testis invasion were associated with worse outcomes. There were 32 patients (25.6%) with non-CR who were treated with salvage treatment. Thirty-one patients died from GCTs and 94% of them had stage III disease. Conclusions: Even though response rates are high, some patients with GCTs still need salvage treatment and cure cannot be achieved. Non-complete response to platinium-based first-line treatment is a negative prognostic factor. Our study confirmed the need for a prognostic and predictive model and more effective salvage approaches
