Effects of creative drama based life skills training on the life skills level of 5-6 years old children
The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the creative drama based life skills training on the life
skills levels of 5-6-year-old preschool children. In this study, quasi-experimental research design with
pretest-posttest and follow-up test control group was adopted. The study group of the research
consisted of children aged between 60-72 months (5-6 years old) in the kindergarten of a private
school affiliated to the Ministry of National Education in Alanya district of Antalya province. Two
groups were formed; an experimental group and a control group. “Early Childhood Life Skills Scale”
was administered to the children both in the experimental group and in the control group before the
implementation. After the pre-test, the "Creative Drama Based Life Skills Curriculum" designed by
the researcher was used in the experimental group for 12 weeks, 2 sessions a week and a total of 24
sessions. The children in the control group, on the other hand, continued their regular training
program with their teachers. Following the end of the implementation, the same scale reapplied to the
children in the experimental and control groups. The scale was reapplied to the children in the
experimental group in order to monitor the permanence of the curriculum, 3 weeks after the end of
the implementation. The data were analyzed via the SPSS program after obtaining all the data. The
normality of the data was determined by the kurtosis-skewness analysis. After reaching the
information that the data were normally distributed, the analyzes were completed by using the t-Test
for dependent groups and t-Test for independent groups from parametric tests. According to the
findings obtained from the study, no statistically significant difference was found between the life
skills levels of the experimental and control groups in the "Early Childhood Life Skills Scale" pre-test
results. When the post-Test results applied to both groups at the end of a 12-week study period with
the children in the experimental group were examined, a statistically significant difference was found
in favor of the experimental group. According to the results of the follow-up test applied to the
experimental group 3 weeks after the end of the implementation, no significant difference was
observed in the life skills levels of the children and it was concluded that the effects of the curriculum
were permanent
International Students' Views on Local Culture: Turkish Experience
The number of international students in Turkey has steadily increased in recent years. As they come from different geographical locations, their successful adaptation to a medium-sized country in-between three continents is of great interest. This study was conducted to investigate international students’ perceptions of their Turkish experience. After an interview with 9 international students, a 46-item questionnaire was developed and given to 421 students; of these, 319 students from 61 countries returned complete forms. Responses were generally positive, although some difficulties according to gender, religion or age were reported. Another 12 students’ written comments were compared with quantitative data. Implications are suggested as well as directions for further research
Incidental foreign language vocabulary acquisition from social network games
It is widely known that young people use social networks not only for sharing and communication purposes but also as means of entertainment and pleasure by playing various online games. Furthermore, there is a common belief among pedagogues that spending valuable amount of time on social networks to play online games can lead to negative academic, personal and social outcomes. However, the findings of this study based on survey conducted with 248 high school students reveal that social network games can also have pedagogical benefits. The results of this research have shown that students can incidentally learn an important number of foreign language words from popular online games on social networks.
Free Voluntary Reading
Doubtless to say, the contribution of reading skill to first and second language acquisition is enormous. From one‟s speaking and writing we can more or less conclude how much s/he has read. We can list the characteristics of good readers as follows: rich vocabulary knowledge advanced reading comprehension, accurate grammar usage, broad general knowledge, correct spelling and punctuation, writing ability, and so on. If reading is so powerful, why cannot we promote reading books in our society, particularly among young people? The fact that we are imposed to read books which we think are necessary or compulsory rather than the ones which we would like to read voluntarily, is the main reason why many of us are not able to develop a life-time reading habit. Since compulsory books, such as teacher-selected books are outside one‟s interest; they are destined to be forgotten sometime, or they suffer form shallow reading, or they are mostly returned to their place on the shelf after browsing the initial pages. However, if people of all ages, especially children would read self-selected books they enjoy, they would be surprised to notice the great change inside them. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to revitalize free voluntary reading by referring to Krashen‟s well-known hypotheses. Also, it aims to revive the reader‟s belief in free voluntary reading with theoretical and practical example
A Causal Relationship between Turkish EFL Students’ Academic Achievement and Borrowed Library Books
A large body of research since 1990 indicates a positive relationship between various library services and students’ academic achievement. This present study has been conducted to revitalize the important role of libraries and books necessary for the success of many students, irrespective of their age. Therefore, this quantitative study investigates the possible relationship between Turkish students’ academic achievement mean (GPA) and number of books borrowed from a university library during their undergraduate study at a private university. Based on ANOVA, Scheffe Test, and Spearman Correlation, the analysis of 478 academic achievement records of English Language Teaching (ELT) graduates reported a statistically significant correlation between number of borrowed library books and students’ academic achievement mean: the more books one borrowed, the higher was the academic achievemen
A Preliminary Investigation on Feasible in Black Sea of Baited Shrimp Traps
In this study were investigated species composition, catch efficiency of fishing gear and feasible of
small dimension baited traps on shrimp fishery. Traps baited by mussel were soaked times 4, 18, 24, 48
and 72h,
forming priority shrimp species,
Palaemon elegans
and
Palaemon adspersus
with
fish species,
Salaria pavo, Gobius
sp. and
Labrus
sp. in total 10 experiments were caught 375 individuals. Point of
view soak time of traps could be most catch efficiency to 72 h but enter rate of none target species into
traps were gradually raised at times more 18 h.
Between catch proportion and soak time found strong relationship y = 33,766Ln(x) – 37,769 (R =
0,97). Otherwise catch per unit of effort (CPUE) quickly increasing at first 4h, at subsequent 4 h slowly
down and after 8
th
h gradually decreasing determined as to soak time. Line of thought profitable of fishery
soak time should limited 24 h and as alternative fishery methods to damage nature as dredge was
concluded further protective fishery feasibility with using of specials arranged more great traps at
commercial fishery of same economical specie
Comparison View Point of Fish Behaviour and Catch Efficiency of Two Different S Bait S on Bottom Longline
In this study, Effecton fish behaviour And comparison view point of catch efficiency used of two different type baits that horse mackerel ((Trachurus trachurus) and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) on bottom logline were investigated. In the study, Six operations were done and total 162 fishes including goby (Gobius sp.), whiting
((Merlangius merlangus euxinus), thornback ray
((Rajaclavata),
ling (Gaidropsarus mediterraneus)
and plaice
(Platichthys flesus) were caught. While 64% of total catch were caught with
Horse mackerel bait
, 36%
were caught with anchovy. According to results “t” test between catch amount for each operation was significant
(p<0.
05).
Besides thorn back ray prefer as bait anchovy, more effect of horse mackerel bait for other species were determined. Results were discussion about behaviour and catch
efficiency take in to consideration used bait type and caught species characteristic
