    Spinning down newborn neutron stars: nonlinear development of the r-mode instability

    We model the nonlinear saturation of the r-mode instability via three-mode couplings and the effects of the instability on the spin evolution of young neutron stars. We include one mode triplet consisting of the r-mode and two near resonant inertial modes that couple to it. We find that the spectrum of evolutions is more diverse than previously thought. The evolution of the star is dynamic and initially dominated by fast neutrino cooling. Nonlinear effects become important when the r-mode amplitude grows above its first parametric instability threshold. The balance between neutrino cooling and viscous heating plays an important role in the evolution. Depending on the initial r-mode amplitude, and on the strength of the viscosity and of the cooling this balance can occur at different temperatures. If thermal equilibrium occurs on the r-mode stability curve, where gravitational driving equals viscous damping, the evolution may be adequately described by a one-mode model. Otherwise, nonlinear effects are important and lead to various more complicated scenarios. Once thermal balance occurs, the star spins-down oscillating between thermal equilibrium states until the instability is no longer active. For lower viscosity we observe runaway behavior in which the r-mode amplitude passes several parametric instability thresholds. In this case more modes need to be included to model the evolution accurately. In the most optimistic case, we find that gravitational radiation from the r-mode instability in a very young, fast spinning neutron star within about 1 Mpc of Earth may be detectable by advanced LIGO for years, and perhaps decades, after formation.     We suggest a new adiabatic approach for description of three charged particles in the continuum. This approach is based on the Coulomb-Fourier transformation (CFT) of three body Hamiltonian, which allows to develop a scheme, alternative to Born-Oppenheimer one. The approach appears as an expansion of the kernels of corresponding integral transformations in terms of small mass-ratio parameter. To be specific, the results are presented for the system ppeppe in the continuum. The wave function of a such system is compared with that one which is used for estimation of the rate for triple reaction p+p+ed+ν, p+p+e\to d+\nu, which take place as a step of pppp-cycle in the center of the Sun. The problem of microscopic screening for this particular reaction is discussed

    Electron-muon heat conduction in neutron star cores via the exchange of transverse plasmons

    We calculate the thermal conductivity of electrons and muons kappa_{e-mu} produced owing to electromagnetic interactions of charged particles in neutron star cores and show that these interactions are dominated by the exchange of transverse plasmons (via the Landau damping of these plasmons in nonsuperconducting matter and via a specific plasma screening in the presence of proton superconductivity). For normal protons, the Landau damping strongly reduces kappa_{e-mu} and makes it temperature independent. Proton superconductivity suppresses the reduction and restores the Fermi-liquid behavior kappa_{e-mu} ~ 1/T. Comparing with the thermal conductivity of neutrons kappa_n, we obtain kappa_{e-mu}> kappa_n for T>2 GK in normal matter and for any T in superconducting matter with proton critical temperatures T_c>3e9 K.     The Compact Central Object in Cas A: A Neutron Star with Hot Polar Caps or a Black Hole?

    The central pointlike X-ray source of the Cas A supernova remnant was discovered in the Chandra First Light Observation and found later in the archival ROSAT and Einstein images. The analysis of these data does not show statistically significant variability of the source. The power-law fit yields the photon index 2.6-4.1, and luminosity (2-60)e34 erg/s, for d=3.4 kpc. The power-law index is higher, and the luminosity lower, than those observed fromvery young pulsars. One can fit the spectrum equally well with a blackbody model with T=6-8 MK, R=0.2-0.5 km, L=(1.4-1.9)e33 erg/s. The inferred radii are too small, and the temperatures too high, for the radiationcould be interpreted as emitted from the whole surface of a uniformly heated neutron star. Fits with the neutron star atmosphere models increase the radius and reduce the temperature, but these parameters are still substantially different from those expected for a young neutron star. One cannot exclude, however, that the observed emission originates from hot spots on a cooler neutron star surface. Because of strong interstellar absorption, the possible low-temperature component gives a small contribution to the observed spectrum; an upper limit on the (gravitationally redshifted) surface temperature is < 1.9-2.3 MK. Amongst several possible interpretations, we favor a model of a strongly magnetized neutron star with magnetically confined hydrogen or helium polar caps on a cooler iron surface. Alternatively, the observed radiation may be interpreted as emitted by a compact object (more likely, a black hole) accreting from a fossil disk or from a late-type dwarf in a close binary.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ApJ

    The closed form integral representation for the projection onto the subspace spanned by bound states of the two-body Coulomb Hamiltonian is obtained. The projection operator onto the n2n^2 dimensional subspace corresponding to the nn-th eigenvalue in the Coulomb discrete spectrum is also represented as the combination of Laguerre polynomials of nn-th and (n1)(n-1)-th order. The latter allows us to derive an analog of the Christoffel-Darboux summation formula for the Laguerre polynomials. The representations obtained are believed to be helpful in solving the breakup problem in a system of three charged particles where the correct treatment of infinitely many bound states in two body subsystems is one of the most difficult technical problems.Comment: 7 page
