    Studies on Serum Haemolytic Complement and Haematological Parameters in Apparently Healthy Dromedary Camels (Camelus Dromedarius) in Northern Nigeria

    Studies on serum haemolytic compliment and haematological parameters in 330 apparently healthy dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) were conducted in northern, Nigeria. The survey was conducted in the abattoirs of three major northern cities of Maiduguri, Kano and Sokoto. The parameters measured using standard procedures were complement level via the classicalpathway (CH ), packed cell volume (PCV), red blood cell 50 (RBC) and white blood cell counts (WBC). Mean CH units in 50 the camels investigated was 360 ± 15.8. In addition, PCV 12 (32.9 ± 1.5), total RBC (10.2 x 10 /L ± 1.2) and WBC (7.2 x 109 ± 1.3) values were obtained. There was no significant(p>0.05) differences between sexes and ages in all the parameters studied. The result obtained can be used as preliminary data in the investigation of the role of complement and blood cells in some immune mediated parasitic, bacterial and viral diseases of the dromedary camel in the study area

    Transitions/relaxations in polyester adhesive/PET system

    The correlations between the transitions and the dielectric relaxation processes of the oriented poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) pre-impregnated of the polyester thermoplastic adhesive have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic dielectric spectroscopy (DDS). The thermoplastic polyester adhesive and the oriented PET films have been studied as reference samples. This study evidences that the adhesive chain segments is responsible for the physical structure evolution in the PET-oriented film. The transitions and dielectric relaxation modes’ evolutions in the glass transition region appear characteristic of the interphase between adhesive and PET film, which is discussed in terms of molecular mobility. The storage at room temperature of the adhesive tape involves the heterogeneity of the physical structure, characterized by glass transition dissociation. Thus, the correlation between the transitions and the dielectric relaxation processes evidences a segregation of the amorphous phases. Therefore, the physical structure and the properties of the material have been linked to the chemical characteristics

    Topology optimization for human proximal femur considering bi-modulus behavior of cortical bones

The material in the human proximal femur is considered as bi-modulus material and the density distribution is predicted by topology optimization method. To reduce the computational cost, the bi-modulus material is replaced with two isotropic materials in simulation. The selection of local material modulus is determined by the previous local stress state. Compared with density prediction results by traditional isotropic material in proximal femur, the bi-modulus material layouts are different obviously. The results also demonstrate that the bi-modulus material model is better than the isotropic material model in simulation of density prediction in femur bone

    A Survey on the Krein-von Neumann Extension, the corresponding Abstract Buckling Problem, and Weyl-Type Spectral Asymptotics for Perturbed Krein Laplacians in Nonsmooth Domains

    In the first (and abstract) part of this survey we prove the unitary equivalence of the inverse of the Krein--von Neumann extension (on the orthogonal complement of its kernel) of a densely defined, closed, strictly positive operator, S≄ΔIHS\geq \varepsilon I_{\mathcal{H}} for some Δ>0\varepsilon >0 in a Hilbert space H\mathcal{H} to an abstract buckling problem operator. This establishes the Krein extension as a natural object in elasticity theory (in analogy to the Friedrichs extension, which found natural applications in quantum mechanics, elasticity, etc.). In the second, and principal part of this survey, we study spectral properties for HK,ΩH_{K,\Omega}, the Krein--von Neumann extension of the perturbed Laplacian −Δ+V-\Delta+V (in short, the perturbed Krein Laplacian) defined on C0∞(Ω)C^\infty_0(\Omega), where VV is measurable, bounded and nonnegative, in a bounded open set Ω⊂Rn\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n belonging to a class of nonsmooth domains which contains all convex domains, along with all domains of class C1,rC^{1,r}, r>1/2r>1/2.Comment: 68 pages. arXiv admin note: extreme text overlap with arXiv:0907.144

    Single ventricle with persistent truncus arteriosus as two rare entities in an adult patient: a case report

    Abstract Introduction Single ventricle and truncus arteriosus are both rare congenital cardiac syndromes with limited survival. Their occurrence together is extremely uncommon and prolonged survival is exceptionally rare. We present the case of a patient who had both of these defects with survival to age 45. Case presentation We describe the vase of a 45-year-old man with the unusual occurrence of two very rare congenital cardiac defects. He was found to have both truncus arteriosus and single ventricle with long survival. His history, clinical course, and anatomic findings are discussed along with the factors which may have contributed to his longevity, which is unique in the medical literature. His management reflected the state of medical knowledge at the time when he presented, and although alternate approaches may have been utilized if the patient presented today, this case does indicate the efficacy of the management options available at the time and place of the patient's contacts with the medical care system in Belarus. We discuss the findings, frequency, classification, and management of both of these congenital defects. Conclusion This case demonstrates that patients with very complex congenital cardiac disease may survive to adulthood, presenting challenges in both medical and surgical treatment. As the management of these patients is constantly evolving, and interventional techniques are improving, patients such as this with prolonged survival will be more common, with each case providing insights to future treatment. Challenges in management may include prior care provided in health care systems with limited resources.</p

    Quantifying the Adaptive Potential of an Antibiotic Resistance Enzyme

    For a quantitative understanding of the process of adaptation, we need to understand its “raw material,” that is, the frequency and fitness effects of beneficial mutations. At present, most empirical evidence suggests an exponential distribution of fitness effects of beneficial mutations, as predicted for Gumbel-domain distributions by extreme value theory. Here, we study the distribution of mutation effects on cefotaxime (Ctx) resistance and fitness of 48 unique beneficial mutations in the bacterial enzyme TEM-1 ÎČ-lactamase, which were obtained by screening the products of random mutagenesis for increased Ctx resistance. Our contributions are threefold. First, based on the frequency of unique mutations among more than 300 sequenced isolates and correcting for mutation bias, we conservatively estimate that the total number of first-step mutations that increase Ctx resistance in this enzyme is 87 [95% CI 75–189], or 3.4% of all 2,583 possible base-pair substitutions. Of the 48 mutations, 10 are synonymous and the majority of the 38 non-synonymous mutations occur in the pocket surrounding the catalytic site. Second, we estimate the effects of the mutations on Ctx resistance by determining survival at various Ctx concentrations, and we derive their fitness effects by modeling reproduction and survival as a branching process. Third, we find that the distribution of both measures follows a FrĂ©chet-type distribution characterized by a broad tail of a few exceptionally fit mutants. Such distributions have fundamental evolutionary implications, including an increased predictability of evolution, and may provide a partial explanation for recent observations of striking parallel evolution of antibiotic resistance
