Evaluation of wind comfort with computational fluid dynamics simulations for pedestrian sidewalks around buildings

Wind power could be one of the most clean and powerful renewable resources for electrical energy production, but on the other hand, uncontrolled wind flow especially in urban places could cause undesired situations as damage to buildings, decrease in pedestrian comfort, environmental damage, or even life loss. Construction of high-rise buildings, widely spread structures within cities, and environmental changes forces, engineers to find quick, reliable, and also economically viable solutions during design stages, but wind comfort of sidewalks generally not considered enough even if they are located in crowded areas. The web-based computer aided engineering (CAE) program named Simscale which runs on the basis of sophisticated graphical interface was used as computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software to determine wind speeds under influence of buildings in the Nuh Naci Yazgan University campus. Also, field measurements carried out in campus area for a short term period were compared with long term hourly wind speed data obtained from the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) station located in Kayseri to identify most optimal wind speed data for the research area. Results of analysis showed that wind speed increased in the mostly used paths of campus, which means that the layout of buildings negatively affected the wind comfort. CFD analysis softwares could be used to determine the possible consquences of wind with less economic investment in a short time, and they could be used in accordance with comfort criterias as well as safety regulations

In this study it was intended to investigate the Boredom and satisfaction perceptions of the teachers who participate / do not participate in recreational activities during their leisure time in Konya. The screening model was used in the study. 330 questionnaire forms were distributed to the participants. As the result of the review, 300 of the questionnaires were found to be worth for analyzing after excluding those which were invalid due to the following reasons marking the same options or leaving the questionnaire incomplete. The information of 300 participants (46,7% male n=140, 53,3% female n=160) were taken into consideration. The Leisure Boredom Scale whose Turkish adaptation was made by Kara, Gürbüz and Öncü was used as data collection tool in the research. The boredom and satisfaction perceptions of the participants in their leisure time were evaluated in terms of the age, gender, income level and the frequency of participation. In the study significant difference was observed at the significance level in the leisure boredom perception according to variables age, gender and the frequency of participation. In terms of these variables significant difference was not observed in the satisfaction perceptions. On the contrary, in terms of the income level variable while significant difference wasn’t observed in the leisure boredom perception, in the satisfaction perception significant difference was observed. At the participation point of the educational administrators and teachers in leisure time activities contribution can be ensured to the satisfaction perception against the boredom with the necessary planning and implementing possibilities

Investigating the effectiveness of yoga program in children with enthesitis related arthritis was aimed in this study. Twenty-one children with enthesitis-related arthritis, 11 in the yoga group and 10 in the home exercise group, were included in the study. Children were assessed at baseline and after eight weeks regarding to pain (Visual Analog Scale), functional status (six-minute walk test, stair climb test, lateral bridge test), spinal mobility (modified Schöber test, trunk lateral flexion) and quality of life (PedsQL children and parent form). Children performed exercise twice a week for eight weeks, depending on their group. As a result of our study, it was found that the yoga program applied for eight weeks under the supervision of physiotherapist had a significant effect on resting pain, activity pain, six minutes walking distance, stair climb test, lateral bridge test and quality of life of children (p<0.05). In the home exercise group, significant improvements were observed only in terms of stair climb test and lateral bridge test times (p<0.05). It was determined that yoga was superior to home exercise in reducing activity pain (p<0.05). It can be used in yoga rehabilitation programs in children with enthesitis-related arthritis to achieve improvements in pain, functional status and quality of life

Crohn’s disease (CD) is a chronic disease of the digestive system. It is characterized by lesions predominantly located in the small intestine and colon, although they may also occur in any segment of the gut, including the oral cavity. the involvement of oral mucosa in CD may be underreported, as up to 42% of pediatric patients with CD were found to have oral lesions after undergoing a thorough oral examination. Here, we present a case of CD in which the patient was referred to a dentist due to non-healing aphthous ulcers in the mouth. Our patient, a 16-year-old boy, was admitted to the dentistry clinic with swelling of the oral mucosa and the lips which had been ongoing for 3 months. the patient was referred to our department due to the non-response of the mucosal lesions to repeated cycles of medical treatment. Colonoscopy revealed a cobblestone appearance especially in the left colon, partly normal mucosa, and exudative ulcers. Biopsy samples showed increased inflammatory cell infiltration in the lamina propria and cryptitis in some of the crypts. A close collaboration between gastroenterologists and dentists is useful when addressing the diagnosis and appropriate management of these patient
