Intelligent multimedia indexing and retrieval through multi-source information extraction and merging
This paper reports work on automated meta-data\ud
creation for multimedia content. The approach results\ud
in the generation of a conceptual index of\ud
the content which may then be searched via semantic\ud
categories instead of keywords. The novelty\ud
of the work is to exploit multiple sources of\ud
information relating to video content (in this case\ud
the rich range of sources covering important sports\ud
events). News, commentaries and web reports covering\ud
international football games in multiple languages\ud
and multiple modalities is analysed and the\ud
resultant data merged. This merging process leads\ud
to increased accuracy relative to individual sources
Draft Genome Sequences of a Bacillus subtilis Strain, a Bacillus velezensis Strain, a Paenibacillus Strain, and an Acinetobacter baumannii Strain, All Isolated from the Phyllosphere of Lactuca sativa or Solanum lycopersicum
Four strains isolated from tomato and lettuce phyllosphere were sequenced in order to investigate the presence of novel antimicrobial gene clusters and to get a better understanding of plant microbe interactions. These strains comprise two Bacillus strains, one Paenibacillus strain, and one Acinetobacter strain.</p
Structure of Disk Dominated Galaxies I. Bulge/Disk Parameters, Simulations, and Secular Evolution
(Abridged) A robust analysis of galaxy structural parameters, based on the
modeling of bulge and disk brightnesses in the BVRH bandpasses, is presented
for 121 face-on and moderately inclined late-type spirals. Each surface
brightness (SB) profile is decomposed into a sum of a generalized Sersic bulge
and an exponential disk. The reliability and limitations of our bulge-to-disk
(B/D) decompositions are tested with extensive simulations of galaxy brightness
profiles (1D) and images (2D). Galaxy types are divided into 3 classes
according to their SB profile shapes; Freeman Type-I and Type-II, and a third
``Transition'' class for galaxies whose profiles change from Type-II in the
optical to Type-I in the infrared. We discuss possible interpretations of
Freeman Type-II profiles. The Sersic bulge shape parameter for nearby Type-I
late-type spirals shows a range between n=0.1-2 but, on average, the underlying
surface density profile for the bulge and disk of these galaxies is adequately
described by a double-exponential distribution. We confirm a coupling between
the bulge and disk with a scale length ratio r_e/h=0.22+/-0.09, or
h_bulge/h_disk=0.13+/-0.06 for late-type spirals, in agreement with recent
N-body simulations of disk formation and models of secular evolution. This
ratio increases from ~0.20 for late-type spirals to ~0.24 for earlier types.
The similar scaling relations for early and late-type spirals suggest
comparable formation and/or evolution scenarios for disk galaxies of all Hubble

Evolving temporal association rules with genetic algorithms
A novel framework for mining temporal association rules by discovering itemsets with a genetic algorithm is introduced. Metaheuristics have been applied to association rule mining, we show the efficacy of extending this to another variant - temporal association rule mining. Our framework is an enhancement to existing temporal association rule mining methods as it employs a genetic algorithm to simultaneously search the rule space and temporal space. A methodology for validating the ability of the proposed framework isolates target temporal itemsets in synthetic datasets. The Iterative Rule Learning method successfully discovers these targets in datasets with varying levels of difficulty
Angle-resolved and core-level photoemission study of interfacing the topological insulator Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 with Ag, Nb and Fe
Interfaces between a bulk-insulating topological insulator (TI) and metallic
adatoms have been studied using high-resolution, angle-resolved and core-level
photoemission. Fe, Nb and Ag were evaporated onto Bi1.5Sb0.5Te1.7Se1.3 (BSTS)
surfaces both at room temperature and 38K. The coverage- and
temperature-dependence of the adsorption and interfacial formation process have
been investigated, highlighting the effects of the overlayer growth on the
occupied electronic structure of the TI. For all coverages at room temperature
and for those equivalent to less than 0.1 monolayer at low temperature all
three metals lead to a downward shift of the TI's bands with respect to the
Fermi level. At room temperature Ag appears to intercalate efficiently into the
van der Waals gap of BSTS, accompanied by low-level substitution of the Te/Se
atoms of the termination layer of the crystal. This Te/Se substitution with
silver increases significantly for low temperature adsorption, and can even
dominate the electrostatic environment of the Bi/Sb atoms in the BSTS
near-surface region. On the other hand, Fe and Nb evaporants remain close to
the termination layer of the crystal. On room temperature deposition, they
initially substitute isoelectronically for Bi as a function of coverage, before
substituting for Te/Se atoms. For low temperature deposition, Fe and Nb are too
immobile for substitution processes and show a behaviour consistent with
clustering on the surface. For both Ag and Fe/Nb, these differing adsorption
pathways leads to the qualitatively similar and remarkable behavior for low
temperature deposition that the chemical potential first moves upward (n-type
dopant behavior) and then downward (p-type behavior) on increasing coverage.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. In our Phys. Rev. B manuscript an error was made

Quantum partition noise of photo-created electron-hole pairs
We show experimentally that even when no bias voltage is applied to a quantum
conductor, the electronic quantum partition noise can be investigated using GHz
radiofrequency irradiation of a reservoir. Using a Quantum Point Contact
configuration as the ballistic conductor we are able to make an accurate
determination of the partition noise Fano factor resulting from the
photo-assisted shot noise. Applying both voltage bias and rf irradiation we are
able to make a definitive quantitative test of the scattering theory of
photo-assisted shot noise.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

We study the mixed Hodge structure on the third homology group of a threefold
which is the double cover of projective three-space ramified over a quartic
surface with a double conic. We deal with the Torelli problem for such

Retrieving Bulge and Disk Parameters and Asymptotic Magnitudes from the Growth Curves of Galaxies
We show that the growth curves of galaxies can be used to determine their
bulge and disk parameters and bulge-to-total luminosity ratios, in addition to
their conventional asymptotic magnitudes, provided that the point spread
function is accurately known and signal-to-noise ratio is modest
(S/N). The growth curve is a fundamental quantity that most future
large galaxy imaging surveys will measure. Bulge and disk parameters retrieved
from the growth curve will enable us to perform statistical studies of

The Disks of Galaxies with Seyfert and Starburst Nuclei: II. Near-Infrared Structural Properties
We have derived the near-infrared structural components of a sample of
Seyfert and starburst (SBN) host galaxies by fitting the images of Hunt et al.
(1997,ApJS,108,229) with a new two-dimensional decomposition algorithm. An
analysis of the fitted parameters shows that Seyfert 1 and SBN bulges resemble
normal early-type bulges in structure and color, with (J-K)^c_b about 0.1 mag
redder than disk (J-K)^c_d. Seyfert 2 bulges, instead, are bluer than normal
with (J-K)^c_b ~ (J-K)^c_d. Seyfert disks (especially Type 1), but not those of
SBNs, are abnormally bright (in surface brightness), significantly more so than
even the brightest normal disks. Seyfert disks are also compact, but similar to
those in normal early-type spirals. For a given mass, Seyferts and especially
SBNs are abnormally rich in neutral hydrogen, and there is strong, albeit
indirect, evidence for lower mass-to-light (M/L) ratios in Seyfert and SBN
disks, but for normal M/Ls in their bulges. In Seyferts and SBNs, HI mass
fractions and M/L ratios are anticorrelated, and we attribute the high gas mass
fractions and low M/Ls in SBNs and several Seyferts to ongoing star formation.
Such abundant gas in Seyferts would be expected to inhibit bar formation, which

Fauna Europaea provides a public web-service with an index of scientific names (including
important synonyms) of all living European land and freshwater animals, their geographical
distribution at country level (up to the Urals, excluding the Caucasus region), and some
additional information. The Fauna Europaea project covers about 230,000 taxonomic
names, including 130,000 accepted species and 14,000 accepted subspecies, which is
much more than the originally projected number of 100,000 species. This represents a
huge effort by more than 400 contributing specialists throughout Europe and is a unique
(standard) reference suitable for many users in science, government, industry, nature
conservation and education
